  1. I spent it listening to minor league baseball (Beloit in the daytime, Rochester at night) and preparing for a funeral. Given how the Twins' affiliates have been playing, this was an appropriate combination.

Speaking of which, the Red Wings host Buffalo this morning at 11:00 a.m. Central. Eric "Yes, Prime Minister" Hacker goes for Rochester.

    1. The Red Wings won. I hope that doesn't mean all the other Twins affiliates will lose.

    1. Indeed. I don't see myself being able to contribute much until they get away from the bloody west coast.

  2. I spent it sorting cards and emailing trade proposals. There is no trade deadline when it comes to baseball cards. But there is a spending cap.

I came across this 2011 Topps Series 2 card, and I think it might be a unique enough play to use as a CSI post. What do y'all think?

(this image is from checkoutmycards.com; I haven't scanned my own card yet)

    1. It must have been shortly after a rare non-home run at-bat against Twins pitching from Bautista*, so that should narrow it down.

*NOTE: Actual statistics may disagree with perceived reality.

    2. April 1, 2, and 3 are the only games Nishi has ever played @TOR.

It's not the 3rd, because Bautista didn't get on base while Casilla (a late inning sub) was in the game.

      1. Has to be the bottom of the 6th on the 1st. Bautista walks, then Lind grounds into a 6-4-3, which was Casilla-Nishioka-Morneau. Bautista wasn't involved in any other plays at 2nd in the series.

  3. I spent it at the doctor having him perform emergency "surgery" on my feet because I somehow was exposed to something toxic.

      1. I'm limping around because wearing shoes is uncomfortable but mandatory at the office. Doctor said it was the equivalent of third degree burns. Should be better next week hopefully.

    1. Always wear sandals to avoid getting this on your feet:

            1. Don't knock it 'til you try it.

Actually, I did. Most of the can ended up in a chili recipe.

  4. My co-worker and I found that both our wives were out of town so we did what any married men with a free night would do. Went to the local independent movie theater and watched Tree of Life.

It was my first time there, but with $6 tickets and beer from the local brewery available in the theater (I had a delicious rye), I'll probably be back.

  5. Rick Reilly is an anchor on sports center this morning. Consider yourself warned.

  6. I went and did a little bowfishing for a couple of hours before work yesterday. Carp are very ugly fish, but they are fun to shoot.

  7. Rhu_Ru, remember that tournament thing you had a few of us join early this season? The one where every 19(?) games, teams advance? How's that going?

    1. STFU!

Well, after Seattle trounced the Twins in the very first round, I stopped paying it much attention. I'll see if I can remember which blogger was hosting it and put the link here.

  8. So, I mercifully didn't get the chance to watch the games on Saturday or Sunday, but it sounds like Blackburn & Pavano stunk up the joint. I wonder what series of events would have to happen for the Twins to insert Slowey into the rotation for one of them. If they let their (stupid) grudge against the guy cloud their judgment and don't bring him in to shake things up... sigh.

  9. I left the ancestral lands and returned to the land of fruits and nuts. Your free ride is ovah.
Now I have to figure out how my agency head will cut several hundred K out of the agency budget without affecting MY budget 😉

  10. Oh. And word to the padre - the original groundskeeper got released over the weekend.

More confusing is that the A's traded Matt Carson for toilet paper and breath mints. What are you doing, billy?

  11. It's a troubling day at Casa de Leche. Now that we're too close to the school year to think about a change, Skim's getting school-related letters that make it clear that this school isn't the one I want her attending.

    Urge to kill rising.

  12. This was my favorite bit:

"It was just a bad week, and the fans at home booed, and I wanted to cry and punch people in the face."

    1. "I felt like I didn't have anything on the ball," he said. "My slider didn't have any bite, my fastball didn't have any life, or sink, or anything. I felt like I was just throwing it to the catcher, instead of through the catcher like you're taught.

If only he had thrown it to the catcher more frequently.

  13. hmm, there seems to be some rumblings that the bryant mckennie era with the vikings may be coming to end... fingers crossed.

  14. per zulgad:

Multiple reports now that the Vikings decided in their meeting today to cut Bryant McKinnie, who came into camp extremely out of shape.

McKinnie was due to make a base salary of $4.9 million this season, with a $500,000 roster bonus and $250,000 workout bonus.

    1. there is something wrong, either with the system or the player's head, or both, when making $millions is not sufficient incentive to come to camp in shape already.

      1. Well, considering that as a lineman, he has a history of sub-concussive head trauma, which has been found to be as dangerous as head trauma when it has occurred often enough, it actually seems quite likely to me that something is wrong with his head. I would also imagine that once you hit such a high weight when you are in shape, it is awfully difficult to get/stay in shape.

        1. I don't think he's ever been "in shape."

Remember the days when offensive linemen weighed in the 250-270 lb. range? Yea, me neither.

    2. I believe I went on record numerous times last year as putting McKinney in my "Benny Sapp" category of players I disliked.

        1. i disliked everything about his attitude. he had the chance to really be something (and he wasn't as bad as a lot of people think he was), but he seemed to throw it all away. i can't really blame the vikings for cutting ties at this point.

  15. a full metal jacket treatment of my Trip to God's Country awaits, but I need to mention that, in addition to the Furious and Bender I enjoyed on tap at Grumpy's at the mini-caucus, I also got to try the (in bottles) Lift Bridge Farm Girl and Crosscut, and the Bell's Oarsman Ale. And a few Schmaltz's Alts and Hopfenmalz's.

first, a little rant. What the hell do breweries have against listing a beer's style on the label? I really, really enjoyed the Oarsman Ale, but had no idea what it was (a Berliner Weissbier) until after I bought it. I'm glad I did, but, damn. The label just said something about "traditional sour mash" technique, so I had some clue, but felt only partly informed. Good sour tang on this sour mash wheat ale.

You guys have hyped the Farm Girl so much that it had no chance of meeting my expectations. It was a nice, but not outstanding, saison. It's a good beer, but not on the same level with Saison Dupont or Ommegang's Hennepin. I'd say it is as good as (albeit a different drinking experience than) Le Merle from North Coast. Sadly, I didn't get to try Surly's CynicAle.

The Crosscut is nice enough. Not on a par with Sierra Nevada, IMO. But a good pale.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Schmaltz's Alt and the Hopfenmalz. Both were good, flavorable yet relatively light-bodied beers. Sessionable, but interesting enough. My dad was a fan, particularly of the Schmaltz's Alt.

    1. Glad to see you enjoyed the Schell's. Can't say I'm too familiar with the Alt, haven't had it in years.

I just bought a sixer of their Hefeweizen, which I might not have realized that they made, and I definitely don't remember drinking it before. It's maltier than Paulaner and Summit (my first two Hefes and the two furthest extremes of the style I've had), tasting a lot like the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Weizenbock, which I was also very fond of.

My favorite from Lift Bridge is their Chestnut Hill.

So there's a start of two beers for your list for the next trip to the motherland.

      1. I'm a Farm Girl fanboy, for sure. Another recommendation for your next trip from me would be Fulton's Sweet Child O Vine. Brewed in MPLS.

          1. My brother loaded me up with Fulton when I was last in Minnesota (at a mini-caucus, no less). That was some good, dangerous brew. Well, it's probably not so much the brew as the guy who was drinking it, but whatever.

  16. What the hell do breweries have against listing a beer's style on the label?

There's a beer in a 12pack of bottles at Hy-Vee. I can't recall what it's called off the top of my head, but it's got fish on the box and is from NJ (it's NOT Dogfishhead, I remember that much). The box doesn't say jack about the type of beer inside, and you can't see the bottles well enough through the handles to find out if it's even light or dark beer. I was intrigued by their packaging, but I'm not buying it by the case unless I know what it is.

  17. Span in for Revere tonight, otherwise no real changes. I would have preferred Revere in for Young against Santana, but I'm sure Gardy didn't want to upset a veteran with that substitution. That's why he's a player's manager but it doesn't max out your daily lineup. Of course, Revere will make an excellent pinch runner for Thome and it could make it tough for Scioscia to pitch around Thome late in a tight ballgame. Plouffe batting second and playing second.

  18. I'm trying to stream "Luther" on Netflix, but it's buffering pretty badly. It was fine for the first 1/2 of the show, but now I can't watch more than a few seconds at a time.

  19. i didn't see one, so i posted a gamelog set to go up around first pitch. hitman, if you got one cooking, feel free to remove mine.

  20. In the "Observant Teenage Girl" Department, my push mower is now missing a large bolt that holds one side of the reel on. It was held in place by a large, orange plastic nob. I am informed that the mower "worked fine" when she used it earlier today to mow the back lawn. The Boy, however, was unable to adjust the reel because of missing knob and bolt when he came out later to mow the front.

Naturally, this large bolt and large orange knob are nowhere to be seen. I am not amused.

Did I mention that the bolt was large and that the knob was large AND ORANGE, and that the mower basically does not function without those parts in place? How the hell can you not notice when a LARGE ORANGE KNOB and LARGE STEEL BOLT fall off your reel lawnmower?????

    Le sigh.

  21. From tonight's stat-o-matic action in my 2010 league:
