January 1, 2012: Cheers

To the Trinket, to the Kernel, to famished pete and to the Calf. To Sheenie's fight. To socal's new gig. To the show getting picked up. To meat finding his place in Ireland after it beat him down. To Mag conquering another country. To The Boy getting accepted to the alma mater. To Beau & Stef, to nib & Linds, to Daneeka's Ghost and his wife and whatever he's going to nickname his kid. To those of you who passed the bar. To the memory of CarterHayes's stepfather. To E-6, AMR and anyone else who makes my taste in music better. To the many of you who play Werewolf and Spookymilk Survivor over at my other place. To Sean, who makes this website clean and quick, and who isn't quite as guarded in person. To Jeff's congregations - both the one he serves in his church, and the one he serves by doing such great work here. To ubes's return. To the semi-retirement of our Boss Emeritus, whom without we'd just be a bunch of nerds scattered about the country cheering for the same laundry. To all of us - the religious, the secular, the leftists and rightists, the college sports lovers and college sports haters, the married, the engaged and the still looking, to the kind, the surly, the sarcastic and the level-headed. To the World's Greatest Online Magazine.

I raise my bottle of Sierra Nevada Celebration to y'all. I love you guys.

        1. cheaps! I had you in mind as it related to my incredible Christmas gift. I forgot to put it up there. Half-baked! (Again, appropriate)

Of course, the Trinket leads the whole thing, so we're good here.

          1. Hey, that's good enough for me. I just hope it brings you as much joy as it does me. (I felt bad for your wife having to dig through those long-winded messages I sent.)

Poor trinket is awake for her first ever new years and has to be watching Carson Daly. She's going to think we all sucked.

  1. I'm drunk. Thanks to spooky and Sean and everybody else who has kept my little obsession alive.

    1. I'm getting there, and you're welcome! Thanks for letting us do so. I know we had this exact exchange via IM just an hour ago, but again...getting drinky and maudlin here.

  2. Here's to 2012: may it have better results for our favorite baseball team, and may it live up to the awesome level that this community placed the bar this year.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for everything.

  3. A happy new year to you all. I'll be gone a few days visiting my parents. Don't let the Twins do anything stupid while I'm gone, okay?

  4. It was hard for me to say goodbye to last year. While on my walk into the shop this morning I spent some time reflecting on what had passed and how much I had accomplished in 2011. I finished a number of personal goals, started making art again (for real, not just puttering around), found some time to focus my ideas into bodies of work, took on an opportunity and then stood up for myself, and made some great friends. The folks at Seacourt have been more than accommodating (friendly doesn't even come close to describing), and I hope that I'll be able to foster life long connections to the people I've met here.

Thanksgiving was tough, but not unbearable. I was invited to christmas lunch by one of the founding members, and was welcomed into her home as though they had known me for years. I've never had much faith in humanity. These folks are going a long way towards fixing that. New Years Eve found me in the shop once again and was the toughest of the holidays to be alone by far. I've never really enjoyed New Years Eve in the past, and don't have fond memories of NYE past, but I think that being alone to start the new year feels awkward. I know that I'm growing homesick, but I'm also just starting to feel truly comfortable in this environment. Anywho, happy new year to the nation. I'll be back in the country before I know it. Attached here is the latest edition I've completed here. This was supposed to be a one off for my brother, but upon completing the print I'm starting to see a series of still life prints emerge. This particular print is based on a flemish memento mori, and includes at least two of my favorite things about ireland - bacon and porterhouse oyster beer.

    1. that may be my favorite of your works to date. Not that the beer has anything to do with that.... ๐Ÿ™‚

    2. That is awesome meat. I'd stand in line behind said brother for a one off of this series.

  5. its Jim Kleinsasser's last game as a Viking today. He is the last player from the Dennis Green regime and when he retires, the Wilds Nick Schultz (started the 2001-2002 season) will be the longest tenured pro player for a Minnesota team

      1. earlier this week, Frazier said that if they are at the 1 yard line he is going to run one in

    1. My brother played HS football against Jim. He was a DT, met Jim in a hole and put Jim flat on his back. Jim was quite well known in HS, so that play was a thrill. A good career for Jim.

    2. to bad Kleinsasser couldnt get a TD. One of my favorite all time Vikings. In Madden, I would always have him on my team and throw to him a lot because he would be 14 tackles before going down

I wonder what an offseason of QB training could do for Joe Webb. It seems like he could be a decent starter. If not, a good backup like this year

    1. Gophs lose. That team is frustrating to watch. They'll go 10 minutes without hitting a basket and still be in the game

let hope the Wolfies win tonight...0-3 for the local teams would suck

      1. Well, at least the Wolves are only playing the defending champions.

Seriously, what sin did the Wolves commit to get this front-loaded schedule? Kind of a bummer...we all know they've improved greatly but we could end the night at 0-4.

  6. Matt Flynn threw for 6 TDs today. It is going to be interesting to see what GB does with him. He's a free agent after this season.

    1. Tradebait, Matt Schaub-style. Seems like the smart thing to do, and as much as I don't like Green Bay, Ted Thompson's been doing a lot of smart things for the last 4-5 years.

  7. Happy New Year, Citizens. Made it home after OD'ing on Runner relatives. I look forward to the next time I can see them again.

Here's hoping for a better year (esp. for the Twins) and for letting the Mayans get back to resting in peace again.

    1. Oy. What an f-head.

the bitchin has already begun in Sactown, with the Bee intimating that Westphal is on the hot seat.

      1. I never understand how those guys get the trade they demand. Why would you take a chance on someone who has that little respect for his organization that he throws a tantrum and sits out?

    1. Him and Be Easy just killed the Woofs in these past two minutes. That was hard to watch.

  8. Sweet mother of mystery, this team is a joy to watch again.

We're going to need an x-rated version of that Rubio banner at this rate. He is awesome.

  9. B-Easy and Anthony Randolph collectively have the basketball intelligence of um... something not very smart.

  10. Happy New Year everybody. Sorry I haven't been around much, just been busy with other things. Will hopefully try to check in every now and again. Here's hoping for a great Twins season and may the odds ever be in your favor. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          1. Oh, I disagree. The rainbow one is just aesthetically disgusting, and I <3 Rubio just makes me chuckle every time. Besides, I do love Rubio. It's platonic, but hey, hearts are involved, right?

            1. I'm with Rhu on this one- well, not on calling it stupid, but hearts Rubio and rainbow Tolbert are two of my least favorites among the banners.

                1. Again? Geez, first I get kicked out of the Casa, now the WGOM. I need some etiquette training, apparently.

  11. Does anyone here have SABR's Baseball Research Journal #16, or know someone who does or where I might find it? Of course, on SABR's website, issues 1-20 are all available online - except for #16. Specifically, I'm after this article:

David Kemp and Roger Wildin. "The Algona Brownies, Champs of the West" Baseball Research Journal, 16, pg. 76-79.

  12. I hope to never see another year like 2011. Pops and Pa, gone within eight months of one another.

I want to thank you all here for your, thoughts, prayers, concern, and especially your friendship. Without the opportunity for daily visits to the WGOM this year would have been very lonely. Despite not having met a majority of our community in person, my relationships here are some of the most lively and satisfying in my life.

    1. CH, we are glad to have you with us. It's nice to think that we've been a help in some small way.

      1. i can second that. i also hope that the new year treats you much, much better than the end of the last one.

      2. I third that. Also, I sent the Winona article to my folks it so affected me. Truly a singular individual.
