Dave Chappelle – Killin’ Them Softly

the first two people that made me truly interested in stand-up as a medium were probably chris rock and this young man here, dave chappelle:

2000

definitely NSFW, and maybe some of the material could run up against some established lines here… well, comedy isn’t pretty.

material could run up against some established lines…

Probably my favorite feature is that a lot of his humor is based on (sometimes uncomfortable) insights into American culture & race relations; he pushes you to laugh, but also to think about what the “joke” means. I really appreciate the way he presents the material.

He is the Richard pryor of his generation.

i should probably explain this a little better: i’d listened to plenty of stand up before, and been a fan of plenty of artists. however, this was about the time that everything was becoming digitized, and therefore easier to get a hold of. this special, as well as rock’s bring the pain (which is also awesome), were on all of my friends’ hard drives, and was then on mine before too long. these performances were the ones that compelled to start amassing everything i have now.

Belly laughs per episode, there has never been a funnier TV program than Chappelle’s Show.

    • Chappelle’s Show is one of my favorites. The consistency from episode to episode in their ability to get me to die laughing was amazing.

I agree with both of these comments. It’s been off the air since ’06 and I still hear a Chappelle’s inspired catch-phrase every now and then. I sure hope he’d consider another run…or even something new. His turn on Inside the Actor’s Studio wasn’t epic…it was still great though.

the bit with Wayne Brady was Hall of Fame material. and incredibly gutsy on Brady’s part, since he has such a nice boy image. (the Mrs. and I saw him on stage 3-4 years ago; he put on a great, G-rated show)

i think i remember hearing he was particularly concerned about the “it wayne brady gonna have to choke a[...]” line, but relented in the end. i think that’s probably the best moment of that whole skit too, so i’m glad they convinced him.
