I saw Jason Isbell open for Todd Snider at the Fitzgerald this past summer. He was awesome. Just him and his guitar.
He used to be one of the three singer/songwriters in Drive-By Truckers and co-wrote two of their best albums (Dirty South, Decoration Day). DBT definitely misses him.
He was basically kicked out of the band due to his alcohol issues and the fact he was getting divorced from the bass player. This album was recorded after he had gone through rehab and many of the songs tell stories that could have been heard there.
There is one bad word in the song but it does fit the story.
I can absolutely see why DBT misses him. Their songs often cut deep, and clearly Isbell was a huge part of that. I'd only heard one of his songs from this, and it seemed a little pedestrian, but this track blows that out of the water. Thanks.
I think the only song I heard on the radio was Stockholm. That is probably my least favorite of the album.
I agree. I didn't get what the fuss was all about regarding Isbell based on that one song. Once I heard the whole album, I got it.
That was good.
I was going to qualify that with a whole bunch of stuff about what I usually listen to and whatever. But my original statement stands up pretty well on its own. That was a good song.
The lyrics are heartfelt, but I didn't like this quite as much as I thought I would. I'm not quite sure how to say this, but the guitar felt a little too plain to me.
Thanks all the same for sharing, Algonad! (And don't mind me, I've probably just been listening to too much noise rock.)
