  1. Excitement on the block. About 30 minutes ago, there was a loud crash outside. My neighbor and I both went out to investigate and someone hopped my curb and clobbered a no parking sign. He stopped across the street. We helped him out of his car, but unfortunately he was in no shape to drive. He wasn't intoxicated, just old and lethargic. The ambulance is grabbing him now because he can't even stand up.

    1. I've seen that sort of thing before. Back in college I was at work during a very slow day at the DQ with one other guy. We were sitting there bs'ing when I looked out the window behind him to see his car roll out into the street. Sitting up on the curb where his car used to be was another car with a sleeping old man in it. Fortunately, no one was hurt and no damage was done. It was wild though.

    2. My car was totaled 12 years ago in an accident started by an old man driving the wrong way on the freeway at night.

    *help wanted*

just to reiterate, after several conversations sprung up regarding the sisyphean nature of joys of parenthood, we decided a column of sorts was in order. we’re going to have a rotating authorship of multiple contributors for a bi-monthly, or maybe even weekly column of a very free form nature. the columns can be whatever you feel like, being it treatises on cloth diapers and homemade baby food, how to raise your tiger to be a twins fan, tips on how to survive the teen years of the reticulated american female, or just a general screaming at the stars. towards that end, we’re looking for volunteers.

with the nature of the column, i don’t anticipate anyone having to contribute more than every 3-4 months, so it’s not going to be a huge undertaking on any one person. i think so far we’ve got cheaptoy, spookymilk, the hitman, rob, algonad, and can o’ corn (plus some interest from brianS and freealonzo, yes?), but we’d love to have more. let me know here before i draft you into service. also, any ideas on the nature of the column would be welcomed as well.

      1. excellent. as mentioned, we'll set it up so nobody ends up doing it more than quarterly.

    1. I could be up for the occasional piece. I've got 4 kids to pull material from.

  3. I just found out this morning that a job I'd applied for, had two interviews for, and had glowing recommendations from other folks who work at that company was filled by another applicant. I feel completely crestfallen.

    1. Not much to say but hang in there. I remember not getting jobs that I really wanted, but when I look back on it now, I realize I'm better off for not having gotten them. The right job is still out there for you.

    2. I hate that feeling. For one memorable interview, I had gone through 3 phone interviews and a 7 hour on site interview with 6 people, only to be told that my technical skills were great but they felt I lacked initiative in an email rejection. On the plus side, I now work for one of their competitors (who dominates the industry) and they've had numerous regulatory issues and layoffs (so ha!).

Long way of saying, keep your head up, because there is something out there, and if they were that interested in you, someone else will be, too.

  4. No eulogy for yesterday's ballgame? Not that the post is needed or anything.

I wish Joe's brother Jake would be coaxed out of managing and get added to the 40-man roster, just so we could see a Mauer in the starting lineup again.

Had a softball doubleheader last night, which was challenging with my sinus infection and having to mostly breath through my mouth. It was fun playing at first with three lefties on the opposing team, and while I was particularly M11-like in the field, I was also unfortunately M11-like at bat.

  5. I'm headed to the game in about 10 minutes. Client's tickets, section 116, behind home plate.
I figured it'd get rained out.

      1. At this point, I just want to get to Target Field. I might be up for the 6/19 game vs. San Diego since that's near my birthday. Who was it that sat in the Champions Club?

        1. I sat there last year - lucked into playing the 4th-wheel on some Thrivent tickets. It was pretty awesome. If I could only get to one game a year, I might consider ponying up for those tickets out of my own pocket. During a time of year that is unlikely to rain out.

        2. I sat in the Legends club, which was awesome, especially because the concourse is completely not crowded.

          1. I wanted Legends Club tickets pretty bad, but I wasn't up for shelling out $100 per at the time. I might try to see what I can find whenever I make it back down there this year.

            1. Normally I wouldn't pay that much either, but it was an anniversary gift from my wife so we figured it was worth it to splurge one time on a ball game. Considering Thome passed McGwire that day with the two bombs in the blowout of Texas in September (and meeting up with hj before and after the game for Surly's), it was totally worth it.

    1. Good luck. Luke Hughes actually batting second and Scott Baker pitching. If the rain comes, it needs to either delay the start of the game only, wash it out all together or wait until Baker is done.

      1. I mentioned to my wife that I really want to see a starting infield of Plouffe/Hughes. Did not think I would be saying that at the beginning of the season.

        1. I agree with this. I'd like to see Hughes get some more playing time, I think he could be serviceable at 2B.

        2. I'm fine with Plouffe if for no other reason that the ability to use PLOUFFE!. Especially now that Steve Holm! is back down in Rochester. It's the little things at this point.

    1. Aw man. I totally feared him when he was at Michigan. I remember (who knows how correctly at this point) him just destroying my Hoosiers.

      1. I remember predicting that he would be a good player in the NBA. Oy. Still, drafting him really paid off for Dallas.

        1. At first, Dallas was roundly criticized for trading Traylor for Nowitzki. You're right it did work out.

          1. Remember how the pundits laughed when Nellie predicted that Nowitzki would win the ROY?? Dirk didn't come close, but, uh, I think Nellie's been validated anyway.

            1. I'd forgotten that Steve Nash was part of the deal too. Wow. What a total fleecing. Nellie belongs in the HOF just for this deal. From Dirk's Repository bio:

Nelson worked out draft day deals with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Phoenix Suns: the Mavericks wanted Nowitzki and Suns reserve point guard Steve Nash; the Bucks desired muscular forward Robert Traylor, who was projected to be drafted before Nowitzki; and the Suns had set their sights on forward Pat Garrity, who was projected as a low first round pick. In the draft, the Mavericks drafted Traylor with their sixth pick, and the Bucks selected Nowitzki with their ninth and Garrity with their nineteenth pick. The Mavericks then traded Traylor to the Bucks for Nowitzki and Garrity, and they in return traded the latter to Phoenix for Nash.

  6. I hate having stuffed shipped when I have a UPS tracking number. My new laptop is out for delivery today, and I'm checking my package status every 5 minutes. Skinner would be proud.

  7. Another good game from the Dude. If he keeps it up (or even cools off a bit), and the Twins don't get back in the race, should we look to trade him before the deadline? Extend him? Or neither?

    1. My thought is that next year the Twins will decide between Kubel & Cuddyer. I'm guessing that Cuddyer's magic skills will outweigh Kubel's baseball skills in the mind of Gardenhire & the front office, but I'd much rather they re-up Kubel for another couple of seasons for a reasonable salary if possible.

      1. I think you are probably right. Cuddy should be cheaper, too, as I think there will be much less of a market for him than for Kubes. I assume Thome will be retired. In that case, I would try to trade the Dude rather than lose him for nothing.

      2. If Cuddyer's this bad all year, he's going to have to take an awfully big pay cut, and players usually don't take a big pay cut without changing teams. I'd guess the Twins will let Cuddyer walk, just like they let Denny Hocking and Nick Punto walk, and Revere will be slated for outfield duty. Whether or not Kubel comes back probably depends on how much they'd have to pay him to be their primary DH.

    1. Funny. Ironically, he never gave up a home run (although his career consisted of only one appearance).

  8. Could there be a worse name for a pitcher?

    Um, Terry Felton?

    Dear Jeff A,

Seems as good a time as any to reiterate how much you bring to this community, Padre. From Birthdays, to Minor League wraps (you should really do one for the parent club...), and the general common sense and decency you provide.

    Thanks.

        1. You guys make it hard for me to maintain the virtue of humility 🙂

Seriously, I really do appreciate all the kind words. I also very much appreciate the WGOM, in both of its incarnations. One of the greatest blessings I have received is the people in my life, and I'm even more blessed that this now includes all of you.

        1. Tolbert: game-tying "triple" yesterday. (Well, a defense-aided single that got him to third base).
I wonder if he could have scored. Revere laid out that catcher. (I was afraid that Revere'd gotten a concussion from a cup to the skull.)

  9. As bad as the Twins' offense has been, and it has been historically bad, you can at least attribute much of that to injuries. There is no real excuse for the Twins having the worst ERA in the AL, and that is with Baker pitching well most of the time, ditto Duensing and Blackburn being pretty solid overall, or at least an improvement on last season. Plus Perkins has been amazing in relief. Capps has been pretty good overall as well. The rest of the staff needs a shakeup and it shouldn't matter that they would have to put players on waivers. No one is going to want them anyways.

    1. I assume Joe Nathan is also excepted from the list of players that need to be disposed of, at least for now.

      1. He crossed my mind. Mistake the Twins made was giving up on him after a few bad outings despite having being good before. Now, getting rid of riffraff that don't have a proven track record I don't have a problem with.
