Game 76: Red Wings at Brewers

Carl Pavano vs. Chris Narveson

Remember when the Twins thrived in Interleague? Yeah, me neither. The Twins are looking to avoid their second Interleague road sweep this season. At least there's only one more game until Thome can DH.

I'm guessing Drew Butera will start today. Day game after a night game, Pavano starting and the opposing pitcher is a lefty. If Butera doesn't start, I think it's pretty clear who goes if the Twins ever decide to go with two catchers. I think that's why Gardy wants Mauer to play first or third, so he can easily have Mauer catch the last inning or two when he needs to pinch hit for Rivera or Butera without losing the DH.

This will be one ugly looking lineup. Narveson has allowed at least four runs in five of his last six starts, so I'm sure he's looking forward to this start.

Right now, the Twins need to find a way to scratch out a win and find a way to keep from losing much ground in the division for when Kubel and Span return. Otherwise, the Twins might be throwing up the white flag pretty soon. It may not matter since most of their veteran players will be too hurt to trade away anyways.

GO TWINS!!

  1. Bad stat coming into this game today, the Twins are 31-43 in games they don't score 8 runs in the first inning.

  2. I have to admit, with the guys behind Valencia, it never occurred to me that the runner on third with no outs would actually score.

    1. I get kind of let down when Gordo sets Dazzle up to say something super xenophobic and he doesn't bite.

      1. Yeah, that should have been its own post. I'm just trying to get the LTE count up today.

  3. Braun's one of my favorite players, but I wish he could've waited till tomorrow or something to do that.

  4. Gordo and Dazzle seem convinced fans are more interested in the Dodgers coaching staff than the players on the team. Then again, they might just figure no on is listening anymore.

    1. Trey Hillman still has a job! In the US! Come see the bench coach that might just wish he still was Managing in Japan!

  5. Dazz with a zinger on Black Jack and Bert: "As much as those guys talk about how they pitched 9 innings every time they went out...."

        1. I might go back out and just push the mower around the yard awhile, that might be sort of fun.

  6. Phil Humber vs Liván Hernández on WGN. After 5.5, a Polly RBI single in the third is the only run.

    1. I wish that Wikipedia would show his hitting stats as well as his pitching stats in the little upper-right summary table.
      For the record: 1081 PA, .220/.232/.295/.525 for a 37 OPS+, 38 bRAR and 3.8 wRAR.

    1. I meant that ironically in part.
Awesome that he's still around, I hadn't heard of him in a while.
Ironically that the Brewers are able to have him in the bullpen and use him in a non-closer role, where he'll be awesome.

  7. Duensing as a pinch runner? I don't care for national league baseball.

  8. I'm muted. Is there some reason the Brewer feed showed God Bless America? Is it a patriotic holiday I haven't been paying attention to?

    1. A hit on a slider? But that's impossible. I thought Mijares guaranteed that Fielder would never get a hit off his slider.

  9. Washington takes the lead on a 2R Espinoza HR.
Liván out for the seventh despite using 112 pitches through the first six innings. 7H, 2BB, 7K.
Now 8K, but Livan out after 6.2 and Quentin gets a single. 123 pitches total.

    1. Yahoo! sez 9 Ks, which is the most Livan has had since 2004. 9 in 6 2/3 is over 12 per 9. He hasn't had nine or more Ks with that good of a K rate since 2001 when he had 11 Ks in 7 IP, which is his career high other than the 15K playoff game in 1997.

    2. “That’s hard to do. People don’t realize. … They think he doesn’t have anything. But there’s not many guys that can actually throw a ball that slow,” Humber said.

I'm pretty sure I could throw it even slower.

  10. Well, at least Nishi got a couple hits and Mauer had a hit and a lineout. Those two really need to start hitting.

  11. Shecky writes this:

Mauer was supposed to come back to the big leagues ready to catch five days straight. Now he's taking his second day off in four games. From what I'm hearing, his teammates are not pleased. Unfortunately, they're not surprised, either.

Three days after LEN3 wrote this:

Mauer, of course, is not in the lineup today because it is a day game after a night game. Mauer was willing to play but Gardy made the call.

Maybe Shecky should get his facts straight before writing crap like this. Or maybe his nickname should be the Troll, since he's obviously just trolling for comments on his blog to keep his job he has no business doing.
