July 7, 2011: Phoenix, for Real

Okay, now I'm waking up in Phoenix. I assume I'm miserably hot, and I assume I spent at least some of last night moving stuff out of a U-Haul and into the house.

    1. Kahn's not the first guy I'd choose to work for, but the more I learn about this situation, the more Rambis comes off poorly in my view.

      1. but Beasley stayed out of trouble in his first year up north, moving into a house on the outskirts of the Twin Cities suburbs becoming a regular on the golf course.

        AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

        HAHHAHAHAHAHAH!

        Etc.

  1. My move-out date is the end of August, and it feels like it's closing in quickly. As I've shared, I'm in the market for a new job. Without knowing where to move, I'll be stuck moving in with Mom & Dad until new employment is found. If that's the case, I want to make plans to either move to St. Croix for 6 months and work some down there, or go trapsing around Europe for awhile. Either one of those requires plane tickets, which I want to buy now for lower fares. But I don't want to buy plane tickets lest a job offer come through. So it's a self-defeating cycle that leaves me back at my parents' at the ripe age of 25.

      1. Of course, and I'm very grateful that my parents have been so helpful during my many transitions in life. I'm just not particularly thrilled with switching a job (albeit one I hate) and a place in "the city" for unemployment in a town with ~5K and no one around.

  2. This is pretty informative on how a rear differential works. (Skip to about 2:00 for the real info to start)

    1. I could listen to that guy say "spooaak" all day, and I love the "inside the car" driveshaft and no mention of the safety of that idea other than that it would be inconvenient for package storage.

            1. Oh, that's not so good, my apologies for the joke. I hope everyone was alright.

              1. Everyone was fine, although the HMMWV was trashed. Since it happened on base we had to clean up the area where the JP8 fuel spilled on the roadway we had to clean it up ourselves. You haven't lived until you've swept up a quarter mile of wet floor dry.

    2. That's a pretty good demonstration why flange lubricators are needed near railroad curves so that fixed axle wheels can be allowed to slip on the rail when going through curves.

  3. So we actually ended up unpacking this morning, with the temperature just under 100. I haven't been as sweat-drenched as I was pulling stuff out of that trailer in...years, I think.

      1. Yeah. I knew in my head what was coming, but my strength, it has left me. I slept ten hours last night and I have nothing today. Nothing.

        1. I don't think I will complain of having to move in 0º F weather anymore. I'd just assume do that than triple digits. Eff hot weather, man.

          1. Having lived in more than one desert, I definitely prefer living up here. That said, I have something of a fascination with Albuquerque and parts of southern Colorado.

              1. Indeed. The only deserts I've lived in - Mojave, Sonoran (more specifically, Colorado), Syrian, and Arabian - are low ones. It's like living in the constant blast you get when you open an oven set on broil.

                1. I believe that Mojave is technically considered "high desert". For what that's worth. It's still frigging hot when it is hot.

                    1. I had a grad school colleague who liked to emphasize that the San Diego area was "steppe." Whatevah. The further east of the 5 you go, the friggin hotter it got. By the time you get to the 805, it's oven-ish. At least up by Miramar (where we lived).

                    2. There's a hill you crest on the southbound 15 or 215 which transitions you from the furnace to San Diego's Mediterranean climate. When we'd head down from 29 Palms it was blessed, blessed relief. The air practically had texture.

        2. I've been to Phoenix several times, including over a July Fourth weekend, and the refridgerators full of liquids and the constant going between air conditioned cars/vehicles and the open-oven-door outdoors were a constant headache. Literally.

                1. Now I have to listen to that song again. Thanks.

I finally figured out where your avatar was from the other day. Proper funny joke, that was.

    1. I haven't been as sweat-drenched as I was pulling stuff out of that trailer in...years, I think.

I'm willing to bet I'm about as sweat-drenched on a daily basis as you were. I lost 6 pounds during one of my runs the other day.

      1. I have rugby tonight, and I'm a little hesitant to go all out after my mishap yesterday and how last week left me feeling.

        1. I hear ya. I'm not a morning person, but I've been getting up early to do my runs lately.

  4. Internet is spotty here, so rather than deprive you all of a recap, could someone cover for me for tonight's game?

    Many thanks in advance.

  5. Joe Mauer is playing 1st base tonight. A segment of Twins fandom gets their wish and Mauer is not behind the plate

    1. Time for a Player A/Player B comparison!!!! (hint, Player B currently is in AAA)

      A: 223/282/266
      B: 212/325/267

        1. ding ding. Of course, the clues were first baseman (from the thread context) and demoted to AAA.

    2. Mauer at 1B made more sense to me once I figured out Pavano is pitching today.

  6. So I have been having a tough time making friends at the new job. I know it seems like a silly thing to say but when transitioning to an office of 2,100+ people you kind of hope that you can find someone you can get along with. Transitioning to a new job is hard enough but if you can't find someone to make wise with it becomes more difficult.

Anyway, today after talking NFL lockout with a guy during my break the topic turned to baseball. It turns out that the guy is a Twins fan. Sure, not a huge fan [read: spends hours a day partaking in an online community mostly filled with people he has never met] but he said he follows along with the box scores and owns a hat. That is good enough for me. I will now spend all of my breaks talking about the Twins with him until he decides I am a loser. I will enjoy the weeks days until that happens.

    1. 90% of the people I would call 'friends' where I work I got close with through the Twins. Sports are an icebreaker like none other.

  7. I am sure most citizens are reading Grantland. Some of the materiel is strong while some is, well, awful. One of the strong points was their decision to bring Rany of Rany on the Royals fame into the fold. His write up on the Brew Crew is worth reading.

  8. Listening to Greg Amsinger advocate for Jair Jurrjens as the starter for the ASG because his ERA is lower than Halladay's is making my ears bleed.

  9. Not to comment on the content, but the headline on the Strib right now could mean one of two completely contradictory things:

Top earners cool to paying more
