July 23, 2011: “Watch for Animals”

So as the Milkmaid and I were driving through a woodsy area to get to this resort last night, we see countless signs to warn us of deer and elk in the road. You know what we came within five feet of hitting, out in the middle of nowhere? A horse. An enormous, confused, motherfrigging horse.

      1. yeah, I was looking at the 'Our Images' section on the top banner, because there was a WGOM banner that I couldnt quite make out. Its the one that spells WGOM.ORG in letter, the ORG part gets cut off on my screen. There are a few banners in there that I havent seen pop up

        1. There are several banners that don't come up right for me at work because my screen resolution is smaller. At home I have a really large res. so everything comes up with room to spare.

  1. confused, motherfrigging horse.

There were no signs to warn the horse about cars being on the road, so he was expecting only deer and elk.

  2. To continue socal (& Dread Pirate's follow-up) point:

Having Jason Kubel back is great, but what we desperately need is to have Denard Span back so we can get Ben Revere and his .284! on-base average out of there and hopefully back to AAA to learn how to take a pitch. Revere has one walk in his last 74 PAs and has an on-base average of .232 over that stretch. That is butt ugly. If it was Casilla, people would be wanting to lynch Gardy for leaving him at the top of the order.

Revere's batting .202 for the month of July with 3 (THREE!) walks. He had a nice series against the Royals, but those three games account for 5 of his 8 hits in the last 2 weeks (for a 2-week BA of .177).

The guy is genuinely likeable, but I don't see Repko in line for the lead-off spot. He has the same OBP this year (.284) and I'd argue they offer about the same defensively...no, I'd actually argue that Repko has a slight advantage there. Tough part is, we don't have a lot to choose from when Span's not in the picture and it may be that Sweet Ben figures in the long-term plans enough to keep getting the nod.

    1. Yup, if Revere isn't hitting about .300, his value drops off pretty badly. Defensively, he's got more range than Repko (not by a whole lot), but his lack of arm strength probably should land him in left field. I want Span back soon, too.

    2. Ooh, selective endpoints, can I play?

one walk in his last 74 PAs

In the 22 PAs before those, he had 4 walks. I'm not trying to say that he'll ever be a particularly patient hitter, but a carefully selected 74 PAs doesn't prove anything.

Revere's batting .202 for the month of July

Prior to the Cleveland series, he was hitting .271 in July (counting the 3 times he reached on an error he was on base 22 of his 62 PAs - that's a .355 clip).

For the season up to one week ago, he was on base (H, BB, HBP, ROE) 71 times in 204 PAs (.348)

A 1 for 25 stretch is bad, (with that added he's on base 72 of 229 - .311) but I'm still going to give some weight to the 200 PAs that came before it.

      1. I'm still going to give some weight to the 200 PAs that came before it.
As well you should. His speed out of the box does add to the equation (re: ROE's). To be sure, his minor league numbers suggest that he knows how to do this job (.326/.385/.408).

        2 things:

        1. This is his first extended playing time in the majors. Could it be that 60 games & 220 AB's is enough for the league to have started figuring him out?

        2. Since taking over for Span on June 6th, Ben's OPB .277, his BA is .243 and he has started and batted leadoff in every game. I'm all for letting the guy work through a rough stretch, especially considering the limited alternatives. Maybe a day off here and there could be beneficial?

I also can't wait for Span to get back so we can use Ben as _elm_n's Defensive replacement.

    1. Wow, those three are very nice. Too bad my rotation seems to consist solely of 90210, Tolbert and Rubio. I exaggerate slightly, of course.

    2. Thanks. The Doomsday Machine was inspired by Klawitter.
He's asking for the ball after he gave up the homerun to Casey Blake in the Dodgers' Shellacking.
That was the first of two solo homers.

I've got a Hoey one waiting for his call up.
I've got photos ready for Nishi and Burnett, but no idea what to write on them.

I've got a thing for AAAA relievers, what can I say?

I just ran through the Yahoo.com photos for each player and tried to find ones that would work banner-wise.

      1. Also, I found a bunch of fonts on my PC that I didn't know I had. They helped me a lot, too.

      1. I normally prefer things in relief (or with that appearance, like the one on the right), but legibility points me toward the one on the left. I don't suppose there are other font options?

          1. I made the beveling a little more subtle, and I think it looks a lot better. For comparison, the single star has the old beveling, the circle has the new. There are 6 test fonts here, all the same font size. Any size and spacing issues are inherent in the font itself. Personally, I think a serif font makes it look a little more classy, and the Baseball Hall uses a serif font. Any preference of any of the test fonts?

                  1. Of course I didn't save the template, just the GIF, so I have to re-do everything. I found the font, just have to re-figure the beveling.

    1. I cant wait for Season 2 to come out on DVD. A Community and Parks and Recreation is about as good as it gets for me on TV right now

    1. I bet I've watched that 4 times. There are a few clunkers, but overall, that is solid entertainment. The Governator is inspired. A lot of it is.

      1. Am I wrong, or does doing an impression within the confines of Shakespeare's lines seem harder than doing an impression straight up on any subject?

        1. Yes it does. I liked how he tailored the choice of some impressions to fit the content of certain stanzas.

    1. I kind of like the one with the pilot wings and hockey sticks (the top right corner on the link provided)

but I hope the team colors are not Blue, Grey with White and Red

      1. The colors are essentially inevitable because they're a homage to the roundel of the Canadian Forces Air Command (née Royal Canadian Air Force).

    1. Nope. You can turn them in the pot if you want to fiddle, but the ribs will do what they do even if you flip them around.

      1. Thanks. I did turn them twice, but I can see where you wouldn't need to. They fell off the bone! My only issue was "defatting"...I have no idea how to do that and still have warm sauce to serve. I ended up using a paper towel to soak up the fat which floated to the surface? Not great, but it kinda worked.

  3. Afternoon, fellas. Looks like Baker's got the oven warmed up today.

EDIT: I'll just mosey on over to the gamelog, I wandered into the furnace room in the basement, I guess.

      1. I haven't paid much attention to the O's in a while. Do they still have that Mussina kid? Let's target him.

        1. While we're at it, why don't we look into this Ripken guy I've been hearing about?

          1. I think he is in the middle of some hit streak, or something. I don't know if they'd be willing to move him.

  4. I spent today at The Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. It was breathtaking. I've never seen anything like most of the things I saw there.

To be honest, I haven't seen much of anything in my life. Today was fantastic. I grew up with a family that has no traveling instinct, so I never saw much until I married the Milkmaid.

    1. You want breathtaking? Go see the Grand Canyon. You're 3-ish hours away. Make it a daytrip, have lunch in Flagstaff. Northern Arizona is where it's at. My best friend--a Flag resident for over a decade--used to call Phoenix: Sphincter.

I'm glad you're seeing all this. Travel is a beautiful thing. Wish I did more these days.

      1. Phoenix, from what I've seen, is not very much to look at. Or experience. I do expect I'll see the Grand Canyon eventually, however, as the Milkmaid and I talked about it just today.

I wish my family growing up had had more of a wandering spirit, but they don't.

My paternal grandmother died a few years ago at age 80. She was born in Blue Earth, Minnesota, and never traveled farther than Iowa. Never once in eighty years.

        1. You need, need, to go to the desert museum outside Tucson. Seriously, that's one of the coolest places that I've ever been, and it's only about an hour from downtown phoenix. I'd link to their website but I'm on the mobile and lack the capability. Seriously, check that place out.

  5. Span went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a SB for Rochester today. It looks like he played seven innings again.
