2011 Game 106: Minnesota Twins at Oakland Athletics

Francisco Liriano vs Gio Gonzalez

The MLB.com short blurb on each pitcher sounds rather similar:

Lasting just 2 1/3 innings on Sunday, Liriano clearly did not have his best stuff against the Tigers and was unable to battle through it. The lefty gave up four runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

For the second time in three starts, Gonzalez was unable to get through the fifth, leaving after 4 2/3 innings. He gave up six earned runs on seven hits, including a homer, and struck out five. His 2.67 ERA is still seventh-best in the AL.

Here's to extending Gonzalez's struggles for a third time in four starts.

    1. Home earlier than me. What a loooong wedding.

Thanks for helping me contribute to the Buffalo economy.

  1. I find it very amusing the the Oakland ballpark even looks like a dump on Gameday.

I find it less amusing that I tuned in just as Franky gave up that donger.

  2. That was a nice slide by Mauer, taking out Suzuki's feet and knocking him off-balance. If you're not blocking the plate, you probably shouldn't be standing on it.

  3. Where are all of the citizens tonight? It is Friday night! It isn't like we have better things to do.

      1. Also working, but bailing soon. Soothing sounds of whatever clown is in the booth for the Twins tonight on my way home.

                    1. I believe it was 30 in total, but I'm usually able to twist one in there for every situation.

But it's probably my favorite show ever, soooo...

  4. I was all excited for the "in play, Runs", then it turns out Cuddy just erased Mauer from the basepath. Stupid gameday.

    1. Liriano gave up his runs on a monster homer on a 3-0 fastball. Other than that they haven't had much.

Also the A's infield is broke.

  5. The A's guy mentions that Liriano's no-hitter was "the seventh in the history of the Twins/Senators franchise." That really took me aback, since the home feed prefers to pretend we don't have a long, interesting history.

  6. Wow, Treasure Island has shows from Buckcherry, Whitesnake, and Frank Calliendo this summer? I wish I lived closer so I could attend these events. 🙁

    1. Next year they will have Sugar Ray, Bad Company, and George Lopez.

  7. A's trivia question pretty simple today: Who were the last two Twins pitchers to have no-hitters?

Bonus points for remembering the dates off the top of your head.

    1. The haul the Astros got is impressive. The Phillies are going to be very tough the next couple of years. It's weird. The Yankees bother me immensely by spending tons of money. The Red Sox & Phillies much, much less so. I'm not a huge fan of the fans of either team, but I like the way they both play baseball. Assuming the Twins aren't in the World Series, I think a Red Sox v. Phillies Series would be fun to watch.

        1. It's weird, because you'd think a team that handed the world to a 1B wouldn't have the smarts to be all that successful. Maybe they lucked into it (although drafting a monster like Utley was hardly luck, I suppose).

          1. Well, their former GM is in the Hall of Fame and was in control through 2008. Also, trading for three ace pitchers (and getting piddly returns when you trade one away again) doesn't help.

    1. I think that was predestined when they hired Gillick. He seems to operate under a scorched earth philosophy. Since he left the Orioles, they haven't had a winning record. The Blue Jays didn't finish higher than 3rd place for 13 years since his departure. The Mariners have averaged 72 wins a season since Gillick left. None of those teams have made the playoffs since Gillick left.

  8. A's guy congratulated Bert before the game, and Bert showed him the HOF ring. "It even says 'pitcher' on it, so in a few years when I'm old and people ask me what I have the ring for, I can remember."

  9. I think Joe Mauer should wear an Olerud style helmet playing first. I would like that.

  10. The A's guys were really incredulous at Bert not being in the Hall until now. They've gone on about it more in the last fifteen minutes than Bert ever has.

  11. Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer. It has a real Tinkers to Evers to Chance ring doesn't it?

These are the saddest of possible words:
    “Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer.”
Trio of Minnesota Twins, and fleeter than birds,
    Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer.
    Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making an Athletic hit into a double –
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
    “Plouffe to Tolbert to Mauer.”

      1. I saw someone on Twitter say Span & Revere were "the same player." The stupidity in that statement is astounding.

          1. If you split Ricky Henderson Denard Span in half you get Ben Revere.

          1. Unfortunately stupidity is frequently re-Tweeted.

Not that I'm a master Tweeter. On that note, I should probably go Tweet some rap lyrics.

  12. I am pretty sure Crisp could have ran from center to double up Plouffe! there.

  13. I'm not a huge fan of the Faith Minute commercials on the radio feed. A huge part of this is the guy's condescending voice. I'm not 15.

  14. Anytime you can walk Drew Butera on four pitches to load the bases you've gotta do it

      1. I just hope that it translates to people outside baseball. It's an enormous risk. How do you explain it to non-baseball people? I have a bad feeling that it has a very small audience.

    1. seriously, anyone with the ability to do so, go back and watch that attempted DP. willingham totally tried to forearm plouffe! in the nuts when he was breaking up the play.

  15. Hmm, Tolbert's BA was .201 before that foul out. At least we don't have to worry about Butera's average reaching that lofty height.

      1. Niiiiiice. Having a good year?

I had a HRBTS of 6 last year, which is probably the best I can ever hope for. This year, 2.

I had a 12 BTS this year. Nice enough, but nowhere near nice enough.

        1. I'm terrible at both of them because I pick almost exclusively Twins.

It's going to be 5 in BTS and 1 in HRBTS after tonight though.

  16. Delmon has walked twice in the same game? I... wow.

Well, if the world ends tonight, I'm sorry I never got meet any of you in person.

    1. Yup, I mentioned that in yesterday's game log. Shortly before I called for a flyball to bounce off his melon and over the fence. I really want that to happen tonight, now.

  17. Alright, I feel okay with this lead and am calling it a night. Please don't disappoint me in the AM, Twins.

    1. Is equilibrium having as many batters in your lineup below .200 as there are batters over .300? Mauer's going to get us all lopsided again soon.

  18. A's feed talking about Cust being let go by the Mariners today. "Well, if he's not hitting homers, he's not that valuable, and last year he wasn't hitting them either." Uh, the primary reason the A's wanted him was his on-base ability. Last year it was .395.

    1. The Save is already an embarrassing enough stat - why not start basing it on the pitcher? For Burnett, any lead above seven innings is good for a save. For the league's elite, just one or two.

      1. How about a closer save? If your performance prevents the team from having to bring in the closer, then you get a closer save. Even the winning pitcher and a batter can get that one.
