    1. Ugh, and today of all days we've agreed to take the kids to the zoo (it's really the only day that worked). So much for day one, even if my team doesn't play today.

      1. I disagree. My best friend in high school was 19 before we graduated. In my district, parents were regularly told that boys should start school at six years old because of "juvenile male developmental needs," while girls were okay to begin at five. Despite pre-kindergarten testing, this didn't take individual student's aptitude into account or anything like that, but was simply a blanket recommendation to parents from the school district.

As a result, guys with spring birthdays like my buddy Dave were 19 when they graduated high school, and thanks to post-secondary enrollment some of us older guys had a year of college under our belts by graduation, too. Dave was a state-caliber tennis player in singles and doubles, but a regulation like that would have barred him from competition in his senior year. Given that he got a scholarship to play tennis at college, I think he would have been hurt by a regulation like North Carolina's which would have kept him from competitive play as a senior.

  1. cc to banjo: When are you gonna do a post about the family cookoff? Inquiring minds have watering mouths.

  2. The ugly truth?

Not addressed in the article, but my recollection on the "beauty" measurements is that it is largely about bilateral symmetry, which is a proxy for reproductive fitness, and likely correlated with other kinds of market-meaningful fitness.

Don't hate me because I'm pretty.

      1. What the hell? Why do we have advertisements in our words? Anyone else seeing that in "future" above and "fitness" in bS's comment?

  3. No Cuddyer or Casilla tonight. Span, Tolbert, Mauer, Morneau, Kubel, Thome, Valencia, Young, Nishi. Four lefties in a row against a team with two pretty tough lefty relievers. If Cuddyer isn't available to pinch hit, then only righty on bench is Butera. I'm betting Nishi is in there only because Tolbert has to play for Casilla. Time to work on that out pitch, Duensing.

  4. It took me about 30 minutes, but I finally figured out how to pair my phone and laptop via Bluetooth. I got a new ringtone on and everything.

  5. From LENIII

Matt Tolbert is starting at second base tonight as the Twins take on Cleveland in the second game of a three-game series.

Michael Cuddyer didn't start for the second straight game because of a sore neck and might miss the whole series. Gardy has a two-man bench tonight of Ben Revere and Drew Butera.

Butera is taking grounders at second during pre-game. Just in case

    Emphasis mine.
