Game 130: O’s at Twins

Twins have scored one run in each of the first three games of the series and have Hughes, Tolbert and Butera at the bottom of the lineup. Don't lose time away from work for this one, citizens. Mauer has a stiff neck and Valencia had wisdom teeth removed, but Cuddyer is back in there after the MRI came back clear. Liriano vs. Jo-Jo Reyes.

      1. Let's face it, Cuddy's a p****.

        (Not really.)

I have had some negative feelings about Cuddy this year and he's a guy I've always liked AND he's had a pretty good year. Why do I feel this way? During one of my long drives this week, I figured out why: because Top Jimmy has been praising him non-stop. It might have a lot to do with some of my negativity toward old number 48 (not Pavano), too.

        1. I've completely tuned Top Jimmy out at this point. If he's on TV, the channel gets changed, I haven't clicked a link here that regards him (or if I have, I've clicked away immediately). It just isn't worth the mental poison he inflicts on me.

          1. In view of the recent "Leave Torii Alone!" conversation, I've decided to rethink my position on him, without the craptastic Top Jimmy coverage. Yeah, he had the farewell "I'd like to play for [insert name of Twins' current opponent] next season" tour, but without the stain of Top Jimmy's perspective, I might soften my Hunter opinion.

            1. I've been softening on Torii for awhile. I'm still annoyed about how he acted, but I've always respected the hell out of him for the fact that he shat on his franchise with a charming smile and left most of his jilted fanbase loving him. That took skill, honestly.

              1. the fact that he shat on his franchise with a charming smile and left most of his jilted fanbase loving him.

Wha?!?! The guy wanted more than 3 years and the Twins wouldn't bite--can't say that I blamed them, but shat upon? If that's defecation, the entirety of professional sports smells of fecal matter.

                1. I'm exaggerating because I like the sound of "shat upon," but I think it was pretty weak of him to talk about wanting to play everywhere else while playing in Minnesota.

            2. I never took his farewell tour all that seriously. Torii seems like a guy that just wants to please everyone, even media. When they come up to him and ask him about playing for them, he just can't say "no comment" and of course he's not going to say he wouldn't play for them because that would hurt his bargaining power. His only problem is just being able to turn off his mouth, but there are plenty of people like that.

  1. Listening to Dick, it's clear that he's only a couple of games away from treating these games the way Hark Harrelson treats lopside White Sox losses.

    1. Gibson. Blyleven. Cuddyer. Me. I think it might not matter, although any of those choices would make it worth watching for one reason or another.

      1. The last three choices would be particularly entertaining, I think. I'm not sure watching Gibson throw 140 pitches with a shredded arm would be all that much fun, though.

    2. The Twins should have a promotion. Every fifth day, hold a random drawing among the fans in attendance. Whoever the lucky fan is gets to start on the mound that day.

    1. Gameday says injured shoulder, but I think it was because he once again went to the mound with his balls hanging out.

      1. The official word is left shoulder strain. So, either his arm fell off or he needs a second TJ surgery. We should know more in 2-3 months.

        1. once again went to the mound with his balls hanging out

either his arm fell off or he needs a second TJ surgery

either way we'll need to wait for the swelling to go down to determine the severity of the injury.

  2. Alright, I'm off to court to contest a parking ticket. I'm going to lose, but I need the entertainment.

    1. It was a bad omen. The Twins scored 9 against the Yankees and have scored four runs in the five games since.

    1. I've been spending the meantime making a list of Twins I want to see with the team next year.

I started with a list of the Twins I wanted to see go, but then realized that that list would be longer.

  3. 1) Joe Mauer
    2) Scott Baker
    3) Justin Morneau
    4) Jason Kubel
    5) Danny Valencia
    6) Alexi Casilla
    7) Denard Span
    8) Glen Perkins
    9) Joe Nathan
    10) Carl Pavano
    11) Francisco Liriano(just barely)

OK so that leaves 14 roster spots open.

    1. Much as I've liked Joe Nathan over the years, I think his 10 mil could be better spent elsewhere. I will also be very disappointed if Butters and Tolbot are on the roster next year. Given Gardy's strange affection for both, I'm prepared to be disappointed.

      1. I think improving the backup catcher spot has to be way down on the list of things needed to improve this team.

          1. This will be the first year he hasn't started at least 100 games at catcher since 2007 (also the last time the Twins had a losing record). Do you think he'll make a more permanent position change or you just think he's suddenly become a big wuss?

            1. I think the common perception is that management has been looking for a reason to move him. I doubt there are many, if any, people here who legitimately think he's a wuss.

        1. if they use his money towards a player that will make a difference, then yes, but if that money's going to sit on the table in the Pohlads' pockets anyway, then bring him back

    2. You don't want Cuddyer next season or you just don't want him because you figure it will take at least three seasons? And no Revere? He has his weaknesses, but he's a fun guy to watch. If they'll just put him in the nine hole, his defense could be a real difference-maker.

  4. This has got to be one of the most depressing series in a long time. 4 runs in 4 games against the worst team in the league.

  5. Well, on the bright side, at least the Vikings season is getting closer.

Wait a minute, that's not bright at all. Depressing time to be a MN sports fan.

        1. They certainly picked the right time to be great. If they can't get anyone interested now, they never will.

          1. I'm about to cave, just to follow a winner. At least I've got Chelsea on Saturdays, but I'd love another winner to undo the damage the Twins are doing.

    1. I'm looking forward to Gophers football. They'll probably be near the bottom of the Big Ten again, but they have a new coach that sounds like he actually knows what he's doing with a new system in place, a new QB that was actually a big-time recruit, etc., etc.

      1. I'm nervous about Gopher football. They could beat NDSU, which would be really embarrassing for the Bison.

      1. you can blame the rest of the AL central as well for making it seem close there for a moment.

      2. Twins are .500 since June 2. They were 17-9 in June and 16-13 in July, so they had one great month, one good month and have had three horrific ones. They are 5-17 in August, which gives them three months with at least 17 losses. At least they are done with the AL East. They finished 10-28 against the AL East. They are 2 games under .500 against everyone else.

        1. It was all the way back to last year when I would say that the Twins were .500 over the last X number of games to point out that they weren't playing that well.
