September Callups

Since this is a lost season, it means the expanded rosters in September take on new meaning. The Twins haven't called up many players in recent years, but they haven't had many lost seasons in recent years either. Calling up players would serve two purposes: get (some) people interested again and allow the Twins to evaluate players at the major league level.

The Twins have one spot free on the 40-man roster, hence the catch-all "other" choice. Some brief info on the four minor leaguers that haven't played for the Twins yet is below the poll.

Who will the Twins call up?

  • Chuck James (17%, 20 Votes)
  • Matt Tolbert (16%, 19 Votes)
  • Jim Hoey (14%, 17 Votes)
  • Joe Benson (12%, 15 Votes)
  • Jeff Manship (12%, 14 Votes)
  • Chris Parmelee (9%, 11 Votes)
  • Anthony Slama (7%, 9 Votes)
  • Someone else (6%, 7 Votes)
  • Deolis Guerra (5%, 6 Votes)
  • David Bromberg (2%, 3 Votes)

Joe Benson:

Benson missed most of June due to injury. Other than that, I think the Twins are just down on him in general. He remained stuck at AA despite doing well and Revere not blocking him in AAA.

David Bromberg:
B-R, FanGraphs
Bromberg missed all of May and June due to injury, and returned to New Britain in late July.

Deolis Guerra:
B-R, FanGraphs
Guerra was moved to the bullpen after another bad start on June 1, had a bad relief outing on June 17, but has been fantastic since. He's pitched multiple innings in most of his appearances, giving up more than one run only once (don't know about inherited runners).

Chris Parmelee:
B-R, FanGraphs
Parmelee was promoted to AA last year and stayed there all of this year. I think the Twins changed his swing in 2010, since his strikeout rate is half of what it was 2006-2009.

  1. Benson wasn't "stuck" in AA. The Twins routinely keep top prospects with playoff teams (or those in playoff hunts) instead of promote them to bad teams. They believe this helps good players learn how to win plus it is good PR for the minor league teams. New Britain was awful last year and this has been a big turnaround for them.

      1. Along with Parmelee, Dozier and Solartes. Why would the Twins be "down" on players performing well? Unless someone has further insight, that's just weak speculation.

      2. 115:39 K:BB with 23 HR at NB last season in only 102 games (after a promotion from Ft. Myers). I guess I'm not all that surprised that they left him there to repeat AA this year. I'm not saying I necessarily agree with that approach, just that I'm not surprised.

But Benson is finishing his age-23 season and has never been higher than AA, whereas Ben Revere, with a .793 career minor league OPS and a noodle arm, has spent substantial time with the big club in this, his age-23 season. Which of these two guys has the higher ceiling? I'm voting for Benson. He's been stuck at AA.

    1. socal, I would agree with you except for the fact that Benson was also in AA all of last year, except for a one month demotion to Ft. Myers right about the time he was turning around a slow start. I'm sure they have their reasons, but I think when someone has proven he can succeed at one level, it's time to move him up to the next level. With Benson, the Twins have not done that.

  2. Whoever thinks Tolbert and Hoey don't get the call is dreaming.
I sure hope that whoever thinks that CJ doesn't get called is dreaming, too. But I have this lingering pessimism.

    1. It made me feel sad, but the first two guys I voted for were Tolbert and Hoey. It seems the Twins are still unsure what they have in those two.

      1. I refused to vote for who I thought they would bring up. Instead, I focused on who I think they SHOULD bring up.

  3. I voted for all but Parmalee, Bromberg and Guerra. I'm sure on Tolbert, Hoey and Manship, and I'm hoping for Benson and James.

  4. I still think, with an open spot on the 40-man roster, Toby Gardenhire is going to get called up.

    1. That's who I think they would add to the 40-man roster. I don't really mind, since his positional flexibility could be useful for the next month. Plus, I can hope the Twins will have him play every position in a game.

    1. They won't be called up until New Britain is eliminated, so if they aren't called up right away doesn't mean they won't be called up.

      1. Good point. We always buy our tix last minute, but I'm more excited about seeing some of the players we used to see in Beloit (Revere, Parmelee, Benson) than some of the other Twins.

  5. Also: Rochester's last game is Monday.
The big league club shouldn't recall too many players until the season is over, because the Red Wings might have to forfeit the rest of the season.
