Game 146: Twins at Tigers

Ten years ago last week, we moved into our current home. I know this because 10 years ago today I was waiting for my DirecTV to be installed when my wife called to tell me to turn on the radio. I may have been the last person in the country to know about the Twin Towers. Let's honor those who lost their lives and celebrate those who survived and helped others survive and maybe share a few of our own memories of that day. As for the game ...

Scott Diamond vs. Doug Fister

Maybe the Twins can fist it off Fister, but I won't be holding my breath.

Diamond had the benefit of unfamiliarity against the Tigers in his last start against them. I don't expect it to go so well the second time. Then again, he did better against the White Sox the second time around, so you never know.

Normally, this would be a great doubleheader day with the Twins scheduled to start about three hours before a certain other Minnesota team kicks off its season (literally). It's really sad that for decades the Twins have tried to surpass the Vikings in popularity and even with two world championships, they still haven't done it. However, they had a golden opportunity to get a leg up on the Vikes, who bumbled through a controversial and disappointing season while the Twins were coming off a wonderful 94-win debut season for spectacular Target Field. All the Twins did was puke all over that field and their fans while the Vikings traded for Donovan McNabb and signed their most popular player to a 7-year, $100 million contract, with only just over a third of it guaranteed.

Hey, Ziggy. You wouldn't want to buy a baseball team as well?

  1. I freakin' hate having to always choose the radio feed and up the volume on Gameday; can't they have just a little bit of smarts in their software? *sigh* Yeah, me neither.

  2. Another gem (pun intended) of a game in which the Twins batters are sleeping and (fill in the blank) will be brought in from the 'pen to let get out of hand. If we don't do something soon, the Tigers have already won.

    1. I didn't want the Twins to win so much as to induce a blown Valverde save. What kind of a dance does he do then?

  3. Coming to you from Candlestick. Stadium is half-fullp. But my ticket was the right price.
I will be sure to file schadenfreude delegate on Tarvaris.

  4. Fister is not your typical dominate pitcher, but his fastball was moving all over the place today. Not much a AAA lineup could do with that. Parmelee again continues to impress. A lot of good at-bats and a nice play at first for that double play. It looks like Gardy is letting Tosoni and Dinkelman alternate games, which probably makes sense. They probably are both going to be fourth OFs and it gives them the opportunity to learn how to come in off the bench and pinch hit when they don't start. Tosoni looked real tentative in his last AB. I loved Parmelee's swings in the ninth. He normally is patient, but got a first-pitch fastball in the zone and took a big rip with a chance to put the team ahead. He just missed a hanging splitter on the next pitch and fouled it back.

I was listening to the game whilst driving, and Dazzle mentioned that Fister broke 7 bats. That's a lot of splinters.

  5. On the 101 headed to I-80 and the Bay Bridge. Traffic is moving better than either offense did today. SF wins thanks to a late kick return for a touchdown, followed two minutes later by a punt return for a touchdown. The SF Giants have more offense than these teams. So do the Twins.

Oh, and crappy beer was nine bucks. We tailgated, so I confined my purchases to a frozen lemonade.

In the "i knew that already" dept., Tarvaris sucks.

  6. I just caught bits and pieces of the game. Every time I turned it on, it seemed like the bottom of the order was coming up. Then I realized that, with the Twins lineup, it always does seem like the bottom of the order is coming up.
