October 22, 2011: While We’re At It

Since we're doing our spring cleaning (it's fall, but work with me), I think it's time to talk about retiring some banners. For your consideration, first and foremost: the Thome ones. Other thoughts are appreciated. We will of course retain links to the retired ones in the banner page.

  1. My ears are still ringing, but Trombone Shorty put on an amazing show last night. Oh, and the opener - Kids These Days - were phenomenal. Totally exceeded my expectations.

    Finally, GO BIG RED!

  2. I'm good with the Thome banners being retired, the Delmon banners being traded away, and the Tolbertin' Ugly banner can elect for free agency.

  3. ESPN is telling me that Minnesota is likely to cover +24.5 against the Huskers. I'm not seeing that.

  4. I am fine with all of my banners expect Springsteen and Lennon being taken down if for no reason other than I haven't' seen them yet.

As for the elm'n headers, honestly, I'd like to keep those. I thought that there was some great work there.

    1. Yeah, I'm really not ready to see any of the Delmon banners go.

Thome could be retired, for my money. Tolbertin' Ugly also...it gave me a few chuckles, but it's such an assault of suckitude (because it's Tolbert, primarily).

      1. I just want to say how much I admire the creativity and skill of the people who have created all these banners. Great job, guys.

      2. Thome returning to the Twins has not been ruled out yet, although unlikely. If the Twins can't bring back Cuddyer or Kubel, it wouldn't totally shock me if they bring Thome back. Can we take the banners out of circulation but wait to retire them for when he does?

    2. i already said as much to spoons, but yeah, get rid of all the thomes (too painful), and as i pretty much lifted it wholesale from A-H, i think it's time to retire the mustache banner. keep all the 2011 stuff until next season starts. maybe at that time retire the delmon ones too. for the same reason, i say keep tolbert until then. at the very least, as a "never forget" kind of thing.

      1. While E whipped up the timely Drew Storen banner in a hurry, it's time has passed. I'd retire it...until Smith eventually makes it apropos again this offseason. *ugh*

        1. good dude willing, capps and damatrait will be gone next year. if so, those can go at the beginning of next year as well.

        2. Just the other day I realized that "Trend Worse" was an anagram of Drew Storen. Uptake on the slow I am.

  5. On the docket for this evening* is a 1,200 "unknown foreign language observation journal" wherein I analyze how an unknown (to me) language - in this case Czech - was taught to me and what I learned from the lessons, both material and the manner of teaching. At least I have Czech beer to help me out a bit.

*It's already 6:30 PM here. What a fun Saturday night.

  6. Gofers are scheduled to be on ABC this afternoon out here. When did ABC decide to live-broadcast human sacrifices?

        1. If you combined the second half of the Goofs and the first half of the Vikings, they might not suck!

    1. Goofs would have covered if not for a terrible bad bounce/bad call/bad rule. On 4th & 1, Nebraska tried a lateral and the guy dropped the ball, but it rolled forward past the first-down marker and out of bounds. Unbelievably, it was called a first down for Nebraska. It was still just 3-0 late in the first quarter. Nebraska scored two plays later and were up 24-0 about five minutes after that play. The refs said because it was a "backwards pass" and not a normal fumble, it was allowed for a first down. That's insane. That's either just an awful interpretation of the rules or just a horrible rule in general. If that is the actual rule, I have to think that will be changed.

      1. yeah, that was pretty stupid. I said to my brother at the time that I have never seen that play before and it can only happen to the Gophers

on the plus side, Wisconsin lost in a heart breaking fashion.

      2. Yeah, I'm not buying that. The Huskers called off the dogs -- they would covered regardless. Plus, Coach Kill admitted it was the correct call.

  7. Coolio had a show in Dublin my first week there. Now Xzibit is doing a show my first week in Prague. If I end up moving somewhere else in the future, Busta Rhymes better be there.
