November 5, 2011: Interaction

My brother-in-law's dog is over for a couple of days. Watching Sour Cream interact with this giant half-black lab, half-pit bull is some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. (The dog is comically gentle, by the way, which I already knew)

  1. Kernel hasn't really interacted with the dogs in my house. She's met them of course, received a few slobbery licks, but she's only recently started interacting with us !

Also, Algonad posted the Thome-to-Philly story yesterday...look who else could end up in the City of Brotherly Love. He must want a ring too.

    1. Sour Cream keeps explaining to Cole what they're going to play. She puts together games with specific rules, and gently tries to correct him when he breaks them. He totally plays along; he must love being around her as much as she loves being around him. I could just watch it all day.

    1. i forget, what happens if a FA signs before the team gets a chance to offer them arbitration?

      1. I'm not sure if it's as if they automatically offered arbitration or if they can do it after the player has signed with the other team. Hunter signed before the deadline and the Twins got compensation for that, so could look up what happened then.

      2. You can probably choose to decline to offer arb if you really don't want the compensation, but I'm pretty sure you just get to offer arbitration even though there is a 0% chance the player will accept.

    1. But have scored two (2) touchdowns in the first quarter. Something's happening here. What it is ain't exactly clear.

    2. Well, the Gophers easily covered the spread. They came up just seven points short and had the ball with a chance to win it at the end (with a two-point conversion, which I'm sure they would have gone for). They had the lead in the fourth quarter on the road at Michigan St. The win last week over Iowa and the near miss against a much better MSU and the Gophers are showing marked improvement over earlier in the season. DaJon McKnight had a marvelous game. Marqueis Grey looks like a real offensive threat now, passing and throwing. Had a couple of big picks late in the game, but one was more a great defensive play on a ball that might have been a little underthrown or just a low trajectory. The other looked awful, but the announcer said the receiver broke inside and he threw outside, so it might have been a bad route. Not sure on that one.

  2. Today on NBA TV, the Buffalo Braves against the 76ers from the 1976 playoffs.

      1. I had a man-crush on the Braves back in the day. Ernie D, Randy Smith, McAdoo, Adrian Dantley, John Shumate, Dr. Jack Ramsey....

        1. They were a fun team to watch. Up and down the floor with a minimum of defense. If I'm not mistaken, McAdoo won a couple of scoring titles with Buffalo. And Ernie "No D" DiGregorio was a flashy PG out of Providence. (Played with the notorious Marvin "Bad News" Barnes.)

          1. Three straight scoring titles.

And to think they could have drafted Tiny Archibald in the 1970 draft....

in 1973-74 the Braves led the league in scoring and were last in defense
in 1974-75 the Braves were second in scoring and 15th (of 18) in defense
in 1975-76 the Braves were again second and 15th

Dr. Jack left before the 1976-77 season to coach Portland to an NBA title. The Braves trade McAdoo 20 games into the season (along with Tom McMillan) for John Gianelli and cash money. One of the more ludicrous trades in NBA history. Owner Paul Snyder didn't want to pay McAdoo what he was worth (he was finishing a contract that paid him $400K -- half deferred -- per year, and was seeking -- and got from the Knicks -- more like $500K, undeferred).

    1. I read that some owners told the commissioner that they were willing to sit out two seasons. OMG, how stupid are they?

      1. There's an empty basketball arena here in Seattle--I've been thinking I should try to start up a league!

        1. The first time I ever passed by the Key, it had just recently been vacated. A few leftovers of the Sonics were still up. It was pretty depressing.

  3. newspaper writers unclear on the concept:

In general, money spent on new dishwashers, fresh coats of paint and stone bathroom tile will come out of the seller’s pocket and can’t be tacked onto the list price. But brokers say that type of spending is preferable to chopping the list price, which can convey to buyers that something is wrong with the property.

so, umm, if you do the renovations, you can't raise the price. But if you don't, you cut the price??

  4. Wow.

This borders on the forbidden zone, so I'll just leave it at that. (it has to do with sentencing on a conviction for an, umm, "icky" crime)

    1. Yeah, I could see how it could cross over. I won't really comment either, but I think this is pretty damning:

Had Mr. Vilca actually molested a child, they note, he might well have received a lighter sentence.

  5. Gophers hockey shut out UND last night. Goalie Kent Patterson has already tied the Gophers record with five shutouts on the season, which is insane. It would be like a pitcher tying a team record for shutouts in one season before the end of May. He's on pace for a season of the ages. The other Gopher goalie to have five shutouts in a season was Robb Stauber, who won the Hobey Baker Award.

      1. For the second week in a row I don't feel like I threw up in my mouth a little bit after watching the Gopher football team. If this progresses the Gophs just might have a chance against Stick's team some day!

      2. Lots of fun hockey of late. I'll be flipping between both the Wild and the Goofs tonight.

  6. good gravy, you couldnt have 2 more contrasting football games. Bama/LSU was low scoring defense makes some plays kind or football, then one click up on the remote was Kansas St/Oklahoma St and it had about 1100 yard of combined offense. Pretty good sports night with the local hockey teams winning too. My remote got a workout!
