Pixel Perfect Memories: Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Release Date: 1993
Platforms:  SNES, Genesis
Developer: LucasArts

Not really an obscure game, but still probably not as widely played as it should have been.  From one of best game developers of all-time, Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a quirky but difficult game that forces you to try and save the world from an invasion of zombies, mummies, vampires, and gigantic babies.  Weapons include water pistols, bazookas, and everything in between.  Each level is self-contained but generally detailed and fun to look at, with locations ranging from beaches, to museums, to pyramids.  The game also combines horror and humor at the same time and does it quite well.  And because it's LucasArts, there are about 40,000 easter eggs to be found as well.  The soundtrack is also quite catchy, with appropriate tunes for each themed level.

My favorite part of this game has always been co-op, even though it possibly makes the game more difficult.  But it's a blast to go through this hilariously crazy universe with a buddy and a drink.  "Now, get on the trampoline and jump over to where I am.  No, not that direction.  Damn!  Now I have to backtrack and do this all ov...oh crap, alien!  Die!"

There is apparently a download available for the Wii, which is the SNES version.

In addition to what ya'll are playing, what's your favorite game that stars the undead?

  1. Oh man, that game was great. This brought back a lot of memories. I wasn't old enough to play it with a drink in hand back in the day, but if there is a Wii download I may have to do that. That would be fun with my bro coming to town since he was way too young when this came out.

I'm still playing Skyrim and I don't really see that changing anytime soon, although I have taken a break or two to satiate my basketball fever with NBA2K11. I think 2015 is the Wolves year!

  2. I decided to buy Portal 2 a couple of weeks ago and just finished the solo portion of the game. They took everything great about the original and expanded it without being derivative. Quite a feat. Can't wait to play the co-op.

  3. As far as the question goes, I'd have to be lame and say Plants vs. Zombies. I Maed a Game With Zombies In It is kind of fun, too.

I've been playing Dragon Age lately, but I haven't really had a lot of time to be playing it. It seems fun so far.

  4. I got this game for Christmas one year, it was wonderful. I remember it sitting on the clearance rack at KB Toys forever. I don't know where my copy went off to, but I should find it and get it with my other games.

My favorite game with zombies is probably Dead Rising. It was one of the games that sold me an Xbox 360, and I was so glad it was successful. I loved the timing mechanic that made you have to think on your feet, and pick which events were most important to you. I loved the over the top weapons and sense of humor the game had. It was just so good. And yet, here I sit over a year since it came out without playing Dead Rising 2. I should get on that soon.

A couple of weekends ago I helped my friend move to South Dakota. Once he was settled in, we started playing Gears of War 3 in co-op. What a blast. It was probably the best of the three games. I look forward to what they do next generation with this series, it was probably my favorite series of games that came out of this generation.

I took the bus home, and I spent the entire time playing Ridge Racer 2 for PSP on my lovely, hacked PSP Go. So, Ridge Racer 2 is a compilation of cars, tracks, and music from all the Ridge games. It's totally awesome, and has me super hyped for Ridge Racer for the PlayStation Vita, even though I know it has very few tracks & cars in it. Sigh.

Happy Soul Calibur V day, everyone!

  5. I had no idea that Zombies Ate My Neighbors - which I never got to - hit the Wii store. Hello, Wii store!

I also strongly considered buying a 360 (despite already having the others) when Dead Rising came out. I really wanted to play that one.

    1. At what point did the first three get repetitive and boring for you? I played all the way through the first one and since it was fresh and new I didn't get bored even though the gameplay was excruciatingly repetitive. The second one was such an upgrade from the first that I never got bored in that one either. Brotherhood started to bore me about halfway through, but I finished it just to continue the story. I haven't started Revelations yet and I haven't heard great things.

  6. Started Skyward Sword. Haven't played much, as I just started the first dungeon. The new Wiimote is neat, but frustrating to have to re-center it after 30 minutes or so. Also, the Wii hooked up to an HDTV does not look good. I don't have the HDTV connector, but that just changes the resolution from a slighty fuzzy, jagged 480i to a crisper, jagged 480p.

    1. Part of why I play my Wii so little, despite it having tons of games I really want to play, is how bad it looks on my HDTV. If I had a better TV, and a lot of money, I'd buy a separate upscaling unit like the XRGB FrameMeister for my Wii and the 9 other SD consoles I have. If I had more room, and a stronger back, I'd try to hunt down an widescreen HD CRT like the Sony WEGA XBR 960. I worry about that lasting for too long, though, so I'm really considering a FrameMeister once Jess & I move and get stuff settled.

  7. I LOVED Zombies Ate My Neighbors. I played that game all the time with my cousins when we were about 10. It was too hard for us to beat, but I think we got pretty far. Fast forward to 14 years later and I had never thought of it again until I was using stumble upon and it came up in an emulator, that was a blast of nostalgia. I had just assumed that it was just some shovelware that my grandma bought us, but it was so good and I'm glad to hear it was more popular than that.
