    1. I especially like...well, darn near all of it actually. Was gonna say Kinks and Willie, then I saw the Supertramp and I can't complain about a little Frampton. Dire Straits, Crush, Zevon, FF and even that Mariachi sounding Stephen Foster work for me too. Great list dw.

          1. +1 for correctly using millstone and not loadstone here. Literally everyone uses it incorrectly.

            1. -1 for using the varient spelling (offset by the +1 literally snark)

Well, if they were trying to use a compass, I guess he could have been a lodestone, too

                    1. There's a long backstory to my post of which you may not be aware, Perfesser.

                    2. almost certainly not, DPWY.

Inside joaks where I am on the outside are rude and evil. Inside joaks where I am on the inside are hilarious.

                    3. Well then you should start playing Werewolf will on the gubmit's dime. I'll let someone else explain the joak because they'll do a better job than I.

          2. I had high hopes for Asia at the time, but Greg Lake was a millstone.

I thought we liked grinders around here? Greg Lake got after it and worked his tail off. He was a Lucky Man.

    1. Neil Diamond was the first live concert I ever went to. My parents took the entire family to see him at Target Center(?), and I've had a soft spot for him ever since. What a showman.

      1. Dude can bring it. I've never seen him live, only "live" on television but I'd definitely go if he made an appearance locally.

          1. Wow - nice callback. I'm scheduled for a fishing trip that week.

Yes, I'm still in for Monday!

    2. How do you feel about Polica? I'm still not sold on them, even though The Current keeps telling me they're going to be huge.

      1. That song is one of my favorites from last year, but I haven't picked up the album (didn't release until about 5 months after I first heard the song) and I'm tired of teh Current pushing them...so, I guess I don't know.

  4. 1. Will Oldham “For the Mekons Et Al (live)”* Guarapero: Lost Blues 2
    2. Meat Puppets “Lake of Fire (live)” Varsity Theater, 11-10-2007*
    3. Bare Jr. “You Blew Me Off”* Boo-Tay
    4. Battles “Atlas (AMR Edit)”* Mirrored
    5. Shabazz Palaces “An Echo from the Hosts That Profess Infinitum” Black Up

    6. Jóhann Jóhannsson “The Gift” ...And in the Endless Pause There Came the Sound of Bees
    7. Rocky Votolato “Little Spring” Big Orange Studios 3/16/2012 (Daytrotter Session)
    8. Twilight Circus Dub Sound System “Lightning Strike” Volcanic Dub
    9. Dub Colossus “Gubeliye” Addis Through the Looking Glass*
    T. Merle Haggard and the Strangers “Today I Started Loving You Again” The Legend of Bonnie & Clyde

    *Notes:
    1. "Veto! Veto! Veto!" This is the one Oldham/Bonnie "Prince" Billy album that I really haven't put much listening to. Much more of an odds & ends feel than the first Lost Blues

    2. Available from archive.org. Ha Ha Tonka opened, it was the first time I had heard of them. Also, this was the true Meat Puppets' first show in Minnesota in more than a decade. (It's possible that the temporary and false Meat Puppets of Golden Lies played in the state.)

    3. I'm pretty sure Bobby Bare Jr. still plays this in concert, which is a good thing. At the same time, I don't know what I would have thought of him if this was the first thing I had heard from him, instead of "Borrow Your Cape" and "Flat-Chested Girl from Maynardville", as it sounds like it could be a sexist, piggish, frat-boyish thing.

    4. A good song at 7 minutes plus, a great song at 2 minutes 48 seconds. (The official radio edit was four minutes plus, which was still too long.) Yeah, I just cut the song off at that point, nothing fancy.

    9. Wow does this band (made of UK dub producer Dubula and a collection of traditional Ethiopian musicians) love the pun. They have recent mixtapes Dub Me Tender and Dub Will Tear Us Apart, featuring songs like "Friday I'm in Dub" and "Dub in a Time of Cholera". But their proper albums have primarily had Ahmaric (I assume) titles.

    1. 4. You can hear almost the entire "AMR Edit" on iTunes - you get a 1:30 preview! I can see how 7+ minutes would get old.

    2. It's been a while, and there are some newer citizens so not everyone may know it, but I have put on archive.org a Meat Puppets concert from 1989 and a Replacements show from 1985. See links below:

      Meat Puppets

      Replacements

The replacements show has been downloaded over 1000 times, which makes me very proud.

        1. No I had people. I had some other real cool concerts too but they were lost, stolen, or the cassette tape broke.

2 - About a decade ago I bought a Meatloaf album on a whim, having never knowingly heard his music. I really enjoy the dude now.
5 - Our high school marching band did a Blues Brothers theme one year. I'm still surprised by how awesome the music is in that movie. And how funny the movie is too. That's a treasure.
9 - I never knew who this song was by until just now when I looked it up.
    10 - ::loving sigh::
Bonus - Not sure this is a "bonus".

    1. Not sure this is a "bonus".
See dw at 8:42...though I guess it could be argued that 'Egyptian' isn't really generic.

      1. Right? I managed to know about Ice Ice Baby without knowing about the song that it "didn't sample."

        1. I saw piano music for "Ice Ice Baby" awhile ago and it gave writing credits to both Vanilla Ice and David Bowie.

            1. Yeah, they just crossed off "Under Pressure" and wrote "Ice, Ice Baby" over the top of it.

  12. Death Grips are streaming their new album The Money Store on their Soundcloud page. The cover art is NSFW, and displayed in a pretty small thumbnail on the page just to warn you. The album comes out on Tuesday. It's really, really awesome. Very abrasive and unique. I definitely think I'm going to go down for their show at the Triple Rock 6/21, I dunno, if anyone else is interested they should go. We can have a beer and rock out.

    1. Thanks for this, I was looking for a way to (legally) check The Money Store out.

I'm just curious whether they'll be a novelty to me, or whether there's proper substance there to keep me coming back.

  13. AFter seeing Skillet a month ago at Winterjam, I have to present my top Skillet Tracks:

    1. Whispers in the Dark - Comatose
    2. Hero - Awake - lyrically this isn't great, but I love the music for it. That and it reminds of my their performance of it, which was just awesome.
    3. Awake and Alive - Awake
    4. Rebirthing - Comatose
    5. Energy - Collide
    6. Comatose - Comatose
    7. The Last Night - Comatose
    8. Savior - Collide
    9. Collide - Collide
    10. Monster - Awake

    1. I didn't mind Skillet in their Nirvana phase, and I actually enjoyed them during some of their Marilyn Manson phase, but their Hinder phase has proven to be way more than I can stomach.

Also, I'm obligated to link to the "I Say Fever" music video, since it's one of my favorites.

      httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga0ohgZFVqc

      1. Yeah, I'm highly anticipating that one. Also hopeful the first Menomena album without Brent Knopf will drop later this year.
