2012 Game 45: Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins

Drew Smyly
v
Anthony Swarzak

The Twins are doing their best to keep the number of starters used this year to a minimum. For which I'm glad of course. Resist needing more than 11 starters!

Also, the answer is:
63-1481 0.04080

    1. I've been a baseball fan for pretty much all of my fifty-three years. I should've figured out something or other after all this time.

    2. Amazed.
      A co-worker was impressed with me yesterday. My prediction for DeVries's start was 5IP, 2HR, 2 2B, 7H, 3BB, 4R (all Earned), 105 pitches, no decision.
      JeffA's estimate is way better.

  1. Willingham DHing, Plouffe playing the outfield- but for some reason he's in left field, with Revere in right. Sigh.

        1. The way it works in the United Methodist Church, you first get commissioned and are made a provisional elder. That's what I've been for the last three years. The Book of Discipline says that you're eligible to become a full elder after two years as a provisional elder, but the Dakotas Conference has chosen to make it three. That's been frustrating, especially at my age, but they have the right to do it and there's been nothing I could do about it. Assuming nothing unexpected happens, in a couple weeks I'll be an elder in full connection, or a "full elder".

I've been told that you're really not entitled to use the term "reverend" until you're a full elder. I haven't corrected people who call me "reverend" simply because I don't think it's a big deal. I'm not big on titles anyway; I really don't intend to use "reverend" even after I'm ordained. I'm fine with people just calling me "Jeff", or "Pastor Jeff" if they feel they need to use some sort of title.

          1. I should add that, as far as what I do in the parish, being ordained won't change anything. I'm already authorized to do anything an elder in full connection can do. It gives me a bit more prestige in the conference, I suppose, but I'm very happy where I am and am not really looking to move up the ladder. The main difference is that it makes it harder for the conference to get rid of me, I guess sort of like tenure for a teacher, but I was never particularly worried about that anyway.

            1. Thanks for the clarification. I'm guessing you also get an Elder Wand with that?

  2. Me: Dammit, couldn't they get a decent pitcher for once?

Linds: No, because they would have traded him for a s***y relief pitcher at some point.

    I think she gets it.

    1. Took the FIL to the beer cave to pick out brew-ski's that we could savour whilst waiting for Chinese takeout next door. I picked the Captain Lawrence Imperial IPA. FIL picked a bottle of Bud. You gotta 'preciate loyalty to the brand (hats off to the marketing genius at AB).

        1. If I lived through years of prohibition only to be "rewarded" with a Budweiser, I'd be pretty salty.

    2. My brother, who purchases beer based on hopes that others won't drink it at a party, constantly rags me on my beer purchases. Obviously I'm an idiot because he gets 30 beers for the same price I pay for 6. Oy.

      1. Nothin' is free in this world. You might save money on value beer. But the next day, you'll be payin' out the ass, you guys.

          1. With the ducks and pheasants on the cans! In-laws saying they have 500 Schmidt collector cans in the attic.

    3. For those not in MN, if you are willing to pay a premimum for your Surly, you can get it here. Of course, shipping costs vary depending on the area but if you would pay $3.75 for one at a bar it makes sense, sort of, right?

  3. Startslack needs to go back to the pen when he is more effective.

  4. Dick can't quite understand why so many teams passed up on Delmon when they had the chance.

  5. Dick: Delmon is considered one of the top young run producers in the game.

    SBG: Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

    1. Delmon is considered one of the top Young run producers in the game.

I'm sure this is what he actually said. In that category, he's top 5 at least.

  6. Apparently Delmon was put on revocable(?) waivers and the Tigers claimed him. Dick perplexed about why the other last place teams passed on "good, young talent". Dick, you're right. That's why the Tigers have him.

    1. Odd that he would specify revocable, since those are the type of waivers that people refer to simply as "waivers" unlike the irrevocable waivers that teams sometimes use to try to dump big contracts.

        1. I'll also add that I couldn't remember when he was traded last year. After thinking about it, I remembered it was in August so obviously he was put on waivers.

  7. Oh, that was a sad throw from Revere to second. We know it's not your fault Revere.

      1. Hendriks will be back in a week, I bet. Unless Blackie is off the DL by then, I suppose.

edit: and by week, I mean five days.

      1. Here's my two step process for winning at sports betting:

        1. Check to see who is starting for the Twins.
        2. Bet the over.

  8. Wow Cabrera was off the base tagged for a good 5 seconds.

I don't think the umps are even trying to get it right.

  9. .286/.320/.425, 100 OPS+ -- D. Young, career through age 26
    .295/.351/.463, 107 OPS+ -- D. Young, career through age 26

Looks like the 4th overall pick did better than the 1st overall pick has been doing. Also, it's kind of hilarious that if all along you had just assumed that Delmon would roughly approximate Dmitri, you'd basically be right on, certainly a lot better than most analysts/scouts/observers can predict the future of any given player. Even their strikeout rates are within 1% of each other. Dmitri just edges Del in average, walks, and power.

    1. I saw something the other day where Dmitri Young sold off something like $2 mil worth of baseball cards from his personal collection.

  10. That was probably a double play. First base umps do not like Detroit pitchers covering first.

  11. Today I found the only liquor store in Mankato that sells Surly. This has been a pretty good Twins game so far.

  12. Alright, dudes, let's do this thing. What do I walk into? An intentional walk to put guys on first and second with one out. Awesome!

  13. Detroit color guy: "Jeff Gray comes in with pretty good numbers! He hasn't lost..."

Meanwhile, the screen tells us he's 4.26 with 13/8 K/BB ratio in 18 innings. Let's save the term "pretty good" for...I don't know, almost anyone else.

  14. I think its come down to this. Liriano is most effective as a 1 inning max reliever.

    1. I think its come down to this. Liriano is most effective as a 1 inning max reliever.

If that be the case, I wish they'd just put him there, then. Work him toward being a setup guy if that's what he's destined to become.

Also, feed the man some waffles, because DW's right, there's no way he can be a closer without them.

  15. Mauer is 0-3, but has reached base twice. Fielder choice, and reached on error.
now gets a single. Pierzynski would have hit a triple there.

    1. No, he would have made an out, but he would have made it in a nondescript, team-playery type of way. A hit just doesn't compare with that kind of leadership.

      1. And then he would have been a jackass to the opposing team's pitcher because, you know, that's what a team needs from it's backstop.

    2. I saw Apple Juice slowly beat a ball trickling in from left to the plate already tonight.

So obviously I would rather have him.

    3. Junior Ortiz would have hit a home run to go with the other home run he would have hit later this inning.

      1. I think I'm the only one that gets angry when I see TC Bear's 00 on the back of his(her?) uniform.

            1. I think its because when he was introduced back in the Metrodome days when 10s of people would show up, he was shoved down the throats of fans because he was new and hip (Poochie!). I just wanted to watch a baseball game, not a mascot.

Everyone have irrational dislikes (hatred is going to far). One of mine is TC Bear.

              1. In fairness to the organization, if the on-field product isn't packin' 'em in, you have to do something.

But, okay, I see the Poochie comparison.

          1. I actually went to check b-ref to see if Junior batted left. Alas, he does not.

  16. Same Detroit color guy: "His numbers, not necessarily great. He's punched out 20 in 17 innings, with seven walks."

THOSE ARE ALL BETTER NUMBERS THAN THE GUY YOU SAID WAS GOOD! AAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHh

    1. I would kill for commentary free broadcasts. I know I can mute, but then I have to fully pay attention to catch anything.

    1. I want to know who had the Carroll-White-Gardenhire trifecta on their ejection pool.

  17. Just eject the whole team and save us about 15 minutes.

Unsurprisingly the call was wrong, but I don't really care at this point.

  18. Josh Willingham leads the Twins with 25 runs scored. With his 2 runs scored tonight, Mauer has 23.

  19. So how come pitchers and commenters get all butt-hurt over a batter admiring a well-hit homerun for a second, but no one seems to give a crap about the Dancing Jackass celebrating nearly every pitch?

      1. Huh - D. D. & D. map showing 'Corey's Catsup and Mustard' in nearby Manchester - not sure which D. that is, but may have to check that out.

  20. Please dont trade Denard Span (unless you are getting Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and a slugger in return)

  21. Detroit PBP: Valverde, by the way, sportin' that new colored goatee. Are you liking it?
Detroit Color: Well...(long pause)...it works for him.
    Detroit PBP: That's a no.

  22. did anyone else hear a guy near the crowd mic go on and on and Mauer's $23 million salary?

  23. Oh, well. At least the batters are doing well. We'll just have to settle for 132-30!
