Game 48 Recap: Oakland Athletics 4, Minnesota Twins 5

sorry, you guys. totally forgot about the recap. i must have thought it was a dream or something with capps (barely) shutting the door (here's proof if you don't believe me). the twins rallied from behind, tying the game on a ball that the mountie knocked the crap out of, and donut gave them the lead with a ball that was about 50 feet from being a home run. twins baseball!

i’m sticking with the “When will teh suck end” tag as i’m unconvinced, but this is an important first step.

  1. It seems like it kind of got lost yesterday, but Scott Diamond had another pretty good start. He's made five starts now, and while he hasn't been great in all of them, he hasn't really had a dud, either. Maybe he's going to be a competent major league pitcher. On this team, that may make him the ace of the staff.

  2. Went to the game yesterday (I'm now 2-for-2 this season in seeing wins at Target Field after last year when I went 1-for-12). I was sitting right on the first line perfectly in line with the pitcher to first base (but in the second level). It afforded a great view of Mauer's slide after being picked off. Also, Blackley balked on at least half his pickoff throws (brought his foot back too far) especially when Denard Span was on first base.

After his first inning GIDP, the guy behind me was loudly doing the "That cost us $47K" crap with Mauer. He never said a word when Mauer reached base every other time.

Also, has anyone noticed how comically bad Coco Crisp's stats are this season? One extra base hit all season and a sub-200 average and he grounded into two DP's yesterday.

    1. As a follow-on to all of those times Mauer reached base, Mauer's current 134 OPS+ is tied with his OPS+ in 2008, when he finished 4th in the AL MVP balloting.

    2. Joe was so badly picked off that the swipe tag was too early; great safe call by the ump. And yeah, they sure looked like balks on MLB video, too.

Crisp should have had three DPs if Capps fields the come-backer cleanly.

      1. Right, I loved Mauer's slide because it was such a horrible slide (whether intentional or not) that Ki'ahuie was caught completely off-guard that there was nothing to tag.

        1. He was leaning the wrong way, so I think once he got going back to the base he half-hearted it knowing he was so badly caught. I liked his little "how about that?" shake of the head as he was getting up.

    3. It's interesting how, when fans want to sign a top free agent, money should be no object and the club should spend whatever it takes. Then, when a player making lots of money fails to live up to expectations (regardless of how unrealistic those expectations are), all of a sudden those same fans act like the money is coming out of their own pockets and are resentful of it.

      1. In other news, over his last 13 games, Poo-holes is hitting 288/356/673 with 6 HRs. Despite a .237 BABIP during that stretch.
