2012 Game 50: Return of the F Bomb

DAY GAME ALERT!

#Pitchers

A's: Tyson Ross (2-5 5.79) If I were an A's fan Ross's K picture would be his face on a bag of chicken.
Twins: Francisco Liriano (0-5 8.47 ERA) I'm afraid to look at advanced stats today. Maybe tomorrow.

I for one, welcome our new Dictator who, having fought his way out of the bullpen, has found himself the master of the high ground. Hold on to it for dear life Frankie. I'm also recommending everyone start Liriano in their respective fantasy leagues. Unless of course you are playing me.

DMitt caught last night. Who catches today? GO JOE. Doesn't there seem to be some sort of link between butters and Liriano? GO JOE! Butera might need to pitch, so ... GO JOE!!

The Dictator and Chairman are going to live large today.

#UPDATE:

  1. Span 8
  2. Revere 9

  5. MOUNTIE 3

  1. From the four-letter preview:

Ross threw seven pitches in his lone start against Minnesota on May 19, 2011, allowing a single to Denard Span before leaving with a left oblique strain.

I was at the game last year (bS wasn't ) - the Twins lit. it. up. in the 8th, capped off by a Plouffe! 3-run shot with 2 down. Here's to Butters channeling his inner Rivera, ugh be damned.

    1. And I'm ready to destroy this gamelog like a post-injury Liriano, with all my replies being nested below the wrong comment.

      1. Alternatively you could post the same comment multiple times until all the comments get on base.

        1. I wish I wasn't at work and had time to follow through on this sort of stuff. I would have a ton of posts for half an inning then go quiet for half.

  2. Today's one of those days when I could do what a major leaguer does. As in, if I was on second, I could tag up and get to third on a medium deep flyball to right (assuming the Twins were in the field).

Revere 9. That should be illegal.

    1. Revere 9. That should be illegal.

Especially against a team that runs like the A's have so far this season.

    2. At least we know it will be caught, so that should prevent runners going early knowing it will be hit.

  3. When a guy needs to be knocked in, Mauer takes a walk.

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

  4. I just stopped by to say that in the bottom of the first, the bunt was clearly the key to the rally.

    1. I see he gave up a single to Crisp. Maybe the real Frankie is about to re-emerge?

  5. The bottom of the order (and Span) apparently want to try to make sure Ross pitches as many innings as possible tonight. That's good strategy.

      1. reminds me of last night. Got the kid to sleep and turned on the game, 0-0 in the 7th. Watched just long enough to see the A's score 2, then the internet gave out as the Twins came up in the ninth. Guess I was meant to stay away from the game last night.

  6. Whee, Revere on the run! Now Mauer's just going to walk, that no-hack talent.

    1. My grandpa can stand up there and walk to first and he's not getting 23 million a year!!11!one!

    1. Willingham does K a lot, but that was Ross' first K and he has more ground balls than fly balls.

  7. Liriano has allowed 34 runs this year, 20 in the second and third innings, so he's past his worst innings this year.

      1. He has completed four in five of his six starts and completed five in four of those starts.

    1. He rarely makes it past the second & third innings so the data is slightly skewed.

    1. While technically correct, it really isn't. Span walked and then was erased on a forceout by Mauer, but Mauer ended up scoring on the walkoff HR and he would not have scored if Span had not reached on the forceout.

  8. Of the Twins' last seven runs, Willingham has driven in six of them. Certified A's killer!

  9. Apparently, F-Bomb disliked his bullpen assignment. 39 SO on the season - 9 today (season high for a Twins pitcher).

  10. Liriano had a Game Score of 70, which is the best score of any pitcher that started the season with the Twins. It is the fourth best Game Score this season. Diamond had two that were better and Walters' complete game was better.

    1. Roy Smalley. He's evidence that ubelmann is right when he says teams should have a group of rotating analysts. I find Smalley interesting when I hear him once in a while. I think he'd wear me down pretty quickly if I had to hear him all the time.

      1. Smalley is from the Rick Sutcliffe school of never, ever letting a moment pass without saying something. He may be insightful (I'm not watching today), but he will not shut up.

            1. True that. Every time Coomer starts bloviating I'm amazed that he only has one DWI. The man blathers like a drunken idiot every single time he's on tv.

  11. Twins starting pitchers have thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings.

    1. Burton, Perkins and Capps have been used a lot lately, especially the last three games. Capps could have pitched if needed, so Gardy let Gray start the inning and if he gets in trouble, he'd bring in Capps.

      1. I'll point out again that the "used a lot lately" standard is nonsense compared to years past.

Perkins has pitched four innings in the last ten days.
Capps has pitched three innings in the last ten days.*
Burton has pitched four innings in the last ten days.
Of course, Gray had also thrown only 2.2 innings in the last ten days.

If things were spaced out and pitchers were allowed to go multiple innings (like Burnett today) on occasion, there's no reason these guys can't pitch a few more innings without putting any more wear and tear on their arms. Instead, by limiting everyone rather than using the effective players, you force yourself to make many more pitching changes without getting any additional outs.

*Also, the one "good thing" Capps had going for him when he was acquired was that he could pitch nearly everyday (several seasons with 70+ relief appearances), yet he's barely on pace to throw 60 innings this season due to the bloated bullpen and the rigid use of closers.

        1. Perkins' four innings all came in the last five days, so he was unavailable today. They're trying to be careful with Burton because of his past shoulder issues, so they're limiting his back-to-back appearances. Anyways, it shouldn't matter who you bring in with a four-run lead to protect for one inning.

    1. Someone else will have to dig out the johns because I am too busy being shocked.

  12. That was easy. I'm not sure what to do when the Twins dominate a game. Just the seventh time they won by more than one run.

    1. I predict shutouts for most Twins games.
/not saying who I predict to be shut out/

  13. Willingham has hit seven of his 10 home runs at Target Field this year.

    Bandbox!

    1. I thought for a second I had a chance to catch his HR today. It was coming right at me, then continued on over my head into the deck above.

        1. It was on the right line, but Willingham smacked the ever-loving crap out of the ball so that, yes, it ended up way above/behind me. Momentarily, I thought I had a chance, but then it just. kept. going.

The Surly was a very nice touch to the ballpark. My Uncle and I both got one after the first inning, and milked them until about the 8th. My one complaint is they did not inform you as to which Surly it was, so it was kind of a crapshoot. The sign just said "Large Surly"/"Small Surly".
