Game 64: Twins and Brewers

The WGOM would like to extend a hearty "welcome back" to Liam Hendriks. May you have a Plouffeian turnaround.

Speaking of Babe Plouffe, some of Thome's at bats in 2010 are the only times I can remember being as sure that a particular Twins hitter was going to hit a home run as I was that Plouffe was going to hit one in the 6th inning of last night's game. It's been a joy to watch for everyone - except, I'd imagine, for Danny Valencia, who will now almost certainly get traded at absolute bottom dollar, angering Linds to no end.

The aforementioned Liam Hendricks gets the start today. He was doing quite well in AAA, so hopefully that bodes well for MLB, rather than AAAA.

Mike Fiers gets the ball for the Brewers. This is only his 4th big league start, but in the minors, he seemed to combine strikeouts with good control and very few home runs. Yesterday was his birthday, so going by Plouffe's rampage yesterday, we probably just dodged a bullet there.

Go Twins!

  1. So, does Dozier give reeeaaally good interviews or something? The only metrics the media really cares about are errors, batting average, and RBIs. Dozier has more errors than any other shortstop, is batting under .250, and has 16 RBIs; yet he's treated like he's a Rookie of the Year candidate.

    1. apropos of this, I once had a colleague who was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Self-nominated. Seriously. Point being, EVERY rookie is a "candidate" for ROY.

  2. The Twins need to win today and tomorrow to have a winning homestand against three struggling teams.

  3. I forgot it was a day game until about ten minutes ago. And since I'm listening to Dazzle, I still don't know what the score is.

  4. That might be the most dickish homerun trot I've ever seen. Does Braun always do that?

  5. This game is not amusing me, and I just got here.

mexican pepsi in hand. I'm making beef ribs On the Grill tonight, along with a curry for the Girl (sweet potatoes, peppers, kale, etc., in a spicy coconut milk gravy).

tomorrow: prime ribeyes On the Grill. Ruthless Rye IPAs. Maybe a vegetable.

  6. I was really hoping Hendriks could come back strong. I'm not giving up on him or anything, but this is a rather disappointing outing.

    1. Agreed. It doesn't look any different from how he was pitching before. If this is how he was pitching in AAA, then he's looking discouragingly AAAA-ish.

    2. 5 Ks and 1 BB in five innings. Not terrible. Six fly balls and three left the yard. Sounds unlucky to me.

      1. Not terrible, but not very good, either. And while I know what you're saying, it's hard for me to attribute three home runs allowed to bad luck.

        1. I could count on one hand the number of current major leaguers that could hit that first homer by Braun. That was insane. Didn't see the other two (and don't want to).

  7. Czech Republic-Poland on the big screen, Greece-Russia on the spare laptop. I have the Twins on "previous channel", so I can switch over quickly if you guys make a ruckus about something.

        1. That is a nice one. As the games stand right now, Russia and Greece are both through with 4 points, Russia winning the group on GD. Czechs will finish in 3rd, and the Poles last.

      1. That would be awesome. So far there appear to be 4 countries in the world that take the World Baseball Classic seriously.

          1. As long as "Italian-Americans" are a country.
Also, not so sure if China is serious.

          2. Outside of Cuba, Dominican Republic, South Korea and Japan no one takes it seriously. You have your countries that shouldn't be competing(like Punto's Italy), but you also have a lot of players opting out(like ARod, Mauer, etc. for the US).

            1. Republic of China Taiwan Chinese Taipei, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, Venzuela, and the Netherlands care a good deal.

Funny though that Puerto Rico counts as a separate country for these purposes, but the Netherlands and Netherlands Antilles are combined as one country.

  8. Twins pitchers doing their part to fund cancer research. Unfortunately, no one else but Plouffe wants to help.

    1. Just don't go to clubs inhabited with douchebags. I assume the Venn diagram of "Clubs", "Clubs with douchebags", and "Clubs in Manhattan" looks almost exactly like a circle.

    1. My mistake, the Greeks are through over the Russians as it stands becuase the first tie-breaker is head-to-head, not overall GD.

      1. I wasn't seeing Russia going out. They have been quite the choke artists lately.

  9. Bunt attempt? Down 5 in the 7th? Even if he was bunting for a hit, I question that.

  10. This has been a pretty craptastic game. Cmon Twins. Rip off 8 in the bottom frame.

    1. Wish he'd have got that fully dialed in circa 2009. I always liked R.A. Also, Ho. Lee. Crap...dude is 37!

  11. It's a long season. Games like this happen. We'll just have to settle for 123-39!
