2012 Game 78: Royals at Twins

Final home game before the All-Star break and the Twins have a good chance to win another series. Right now, they're right behind Seattle for getting out of the AL basement.

  1. Right now, it's 91 degrees with 70% humidity in Charleston. I'd say this is a good time to get out of the south, but it's going to be just as bad when I get up to Baltimore.

  2. I've got no problem with Butler's inclusion on the all-star roster. Mauer, on the other hand...I have no idea why that dude is even still on the roster! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  3. I'll be thinking of you all as I sit in the dry heat trying to sell fireworks for the music boosters.

    1. I went to Wisconsin on Friday and I'm pretty sure 98 percent of their economy is selling fireworks to Minnesota and Illinois residents.

        1. You didn't notice the back-to-back businesses: Taxidermy and Specialty Meat Products?

Oh and lets not forget the Colby.

          1. Forgot to mention the Dells and Tommy Barlett ski-wonder-pyramidary.

            1. I noticed, but I live here. Homer's stats must be off.

I generally avoid the Dells like the plague. Partially for the crowds of FIBs and partially because if we're in the Dells, it means I'm visiting in-laws.

              1. Oh - add to the list sex olives and Stoly Doli. And B&B (Sconnie official state drink).

                1. I show my non-sconnie roots by prefering whiskey to brandy. But yeah, the old fashioned has been making a push for official drink lately.

                  1. Here too. I was educated to the wonders of a Brandy Old-fashioned by a Green Bay native (the only born and bred Packer fan who I can actually enjoy a football game with) - garnished with an olive no less!

    2. Our church does that for our youth group, so I'll probably be out there next year when Junior is transitioning into the youth group.

      1. Delmon would have found a way to turn it into an inside the park home run.

  4. After Game 2 yesterday, the Twins are now 15-2 when they lead after the first inning.

      1. According to the box score, they were tied after the first though, so its also not looking possible.

  5. Apparently Gardy wants those runners to not be on base any more. Gray is certainly capable of making that happen.

    1. Ugh, did they really do the squeeze play with one of their better OBP guys? Glad it at least got a run, but come on, Gardy, it was 5-1.

      1. Not a squeeze, at least not a pure squeeze. Maybe a safety squeeze, but it sounded like Span was trying to bunt for a hit and was making sure he at least got a run in. I like that play as long as he was attempting to bunt for a hit (and he nearly did).

          1. I don't think Gardy calls for bunts as much as fans think he does. He'll call for it more when the offense is struggling and he has a lot of young and/or weak hitters, but I think the current team he'll just let the players do their thing for the most part other than pretty obvious situations with guys like Dozier, Casilla and Butera and maybe even Carroll. Probably Mastroianni as well.

  6. You guys won't believe me, but I totally Spookied that one too.

    This Plouffe thing is absurd.

        1. Yeah, but that was Mountie against a lefty. You'd have to be stupid to spooky something like that.

  7. Chen's final line looks awful. The wheels fell off for him very quickly. The Twins had a solo homer and a bunt single and that was it through five innings. Now Chen ends up with 5 2/3 innings, 6 runs allowed, including three homers.

    1. Apparently with all the runs we've scored on that lately, Gardy decided he didn't want to push his luck.

  8. I can't claim any history of competent research, but a quick look at Plouffe's game log indicates 16 of 18 homers were solos. Perhaps this has already been addressed at a level beyond mere observation, but is that anywhere near normal?

    1. He batted fairly low in the order when he started this, if I'm not mistaken, so that could explain some of it. Other than that, its probably Willingham driving in all his baserunners.

    2. I've gotta go with SSS on this one. In this case, Willingham already cleared the bases before he got there!

  9. Morneau streaking to 2nd.

I didn't think the Canadians were like Germans.

        1. You know what they say: When you're right 99.9% of the time, you're wrong 0.1% of the time.

        2. That would be like spookying the Twins scoring 10 runs in this game after 5 1/2 innings.

    just catching up.

    1. Yep, the Twins set a new target field record for most home runs by Drew Butera.

  11. Save opportunity. WOoooOOOoOoOOOOOoOOOOOoooOOOo. Oh, they're not going to capps.

  12. Just a little hiccup. No biggie. Winning series and winning homestand. 1-0 in July. Very nice.

  13. Too close for this boyo. Yeez for the dramatics. Good tatege for the home team.

  14. Let's not forget that Jeff Gray is now a perfect 4-0. Contract extension, Terry. Get it done.

  15. Target Field is now officially a bandbox. Four HRs by the Twins and one of them by Butera. Also, Plouffe how has more HRs than either Beltre or Miguel Cabrera, the two AL third basemen on the All-Star roster.

  16. Had a hearty chimichunga meal at a local establishment for lunch, and chose nap over the ballgame. Looks like I wasn't needed -- nice.

And I'm already sick of the All-Star snub comments like "Don't get me wrong, Joe's having a good season, but Willingham is having a great season" tripe.

      1. I recorded the game, and Linds and I were watching it last night, and right before Butera (a player Linds loves to hate) came up, I said "Butera's going to hit a home run". Our faces when he hit it were priceless, I'm sure.
