A cycle for Niko Goodrum.  Danny Valencia hits two homers.  Brett Jacobson goes wild.  A walkoff pickoff in New Britain.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 6, ROCHESTER 4 IN ROCHESTER

Batting starsDanny Valencia was 3-for-4 with two home runs, giving him six.  Matt Carson was 2-for-4 with a home run, his sixth.

Pitching stars:  Starter Jeff Manship pitched four shutout innings, giving up only two hits.  Esmerling Vasquez struck out six in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.

Opposition stars:  Brandon Laird and Raymond Kruml were each 2-for-4.  Russell Branyan hit a three-run homer.

Key inning:  The sixth.  Leading 3-2, the Yankees opened the inning with a hit batsman, a single, and Branyan's homer to go up 6-2.

BOWIE 9, NEW BRITAIN 8 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting starsDaniel Rohlfing was 4-for-5 with a double, driving in three.  Chris Herrmann was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple.  Evan Bigley was 2-for-5 with a double.

Pitching starsEdgar Ibarra gave up a run on three hits and a walk in four innings of relief.  Daniel Sattler worked 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Zelous Wheeler was 3-for-5.  Michael Rooney was 2-for-5.  Michael Belfiore threw two shutout innings.

Key inning:  The ninth. The Rock Cats trailed 9-5.  A double and two walks loaded the bases with two out.  Rohlfing singled in two and an error brought in a third, making the score 9-8 and putting runners on first and third.  Pinch-runner Shawn Roof was then picked off third base by the catcher to end the game.

Other:  Starter Brett Jacobson issued nine walks in 2.1 innings.

FORT MYERS 7, CHARLOTTE 2 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting starsLance Ray was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Daniel Rams was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Jairo Perez was 2-for-4.

Pitching starsJose Gonzalez gave up two hits and a walk in two shutout innings.  Marty Popham worked two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Robbie Estrada was 2-for-5 with a double.  Chris Rearick struck out three in two shutout innings.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Stone Crabs had just cut the lead to 3-2.  Angel Morales led off the inning with a homer to give the Miracle an insurance run.  Daniel Santana then doubled.  A pair of walks loaded the bases, and Perez hit a sacrifice fly to put Fort Myers up 5-2.

CLINTON 10, BELOIT 5 IN BELOIT

Batting starsMiguel Sano and Jairo Rodriguez each homered and walked.  It was the seventeenth for Sano and the second for Rodriguez.

Pitching starCole Johnson struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up three hits.

Opposition stars:  Jamal Austin was 5-for-5, all singles.  Ji-Man Choi was 4-for-6 with a home run, driving in three.  Dillon Hazlett was 2-for-5 with a home run.

Key inning:  The fourth.  Leading 5-3, the LumberKings scored twice more on a double, a hit batsman, and two singles.

Other:  The Snappers scored their five runs on only three hits.

ELIZABETHTON 6, PULASKI 4 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting starNiko Goodrum hit for the cycle, going 4-for-5 and driving in four.  Travis Harrison was 3-for-3 with a walk.  Stephen Wickens was 2-for-4 with a triple.

Pitching starTyler Herr pitched two shutout innings, allowing two hits.

Opposition stars:  Felipe Burin was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Charles Kaalekahi gave up only an unearned run on four hits and a walk in four innings.

Key inning:  The eighth.  The Twins trailed 4-3.  Adam Walker doubled and Harrison singled to put runners on first and third.  Wickens hit a one-out triple to put the Twins in front and Goodrum hit a ground-rule double to complete the cycle and give the Twins an insurance run.

GCL TWINS 4, RED SOX 3 AT RED SOX

Batting starsAderlin Mejia was 4-for-5 with a double.  Dereck Rodriguez was 3-for-5.

Pitching starsAustin Malinowski allowed an unearned run on three hits and a walk in three innings.  Gonzalo Sanudo struck out five in two shutout innings, giving up only one hit.

Opposition stars:  Jesus Loya was 2-for-4.  Ricardo Betancourt struck out three in 2.1 scoreless innings.

Key inning:  The sixth.  With the score tied at three, the Twins had two on and two out.  Mejia delivered an RBI single.

Batting starsEddy Concepcion was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk.  Victor Arias was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Adonis Pacheco was 2-for-5 with a double.

Pitching starDamian Defrank allowed a run on two hits and three walks in four innings.  Jadison Jimenez struck out two and walked one in two shutout innings.

Opposition stars:  None.

Key inning:  The third.  Leading 2-1, the Twins used three singles and two walks (in that order) to score twice.

    thats more walks than outs recorded. ouch.

  2. Just after a story comes out about how it's up to Valencia when he comes back up and he hits two home runs. Interesting.
