Game 84: Twins @ Rangers

Let's all welcome Sam Deduno back to the big leagues. Even if this if probably one of only one or two starts he'll ever make for the team, I'm interested. For the most part, this is because he's not at all a typical Minnesota Twins starter. Through his minor league career, he's struck out lots of batters, walked lots of them, and not given up many home runs. I'm not expecting much, it'll just be interesting to see how another anti-contact pitcher works out.

Deduno's opponent will be Derek Holland. He's making his first start in a month or so. It's going to be sort of boring to look up much info on him, so just imagine a guy who strikes some people out, walks some folk, and gives up some home runs. There. Now you're either picturing Derek Holland, or pretty much any other major-league capable pitcher.

Hopefully Deduno's first major league start is a solid one, and the 'Sam Deduno' tag that I'm debuting today gets to be used for a while longer.

  1. Because my Fox affiliate is carrying the Yankmes-Red Sox game I'm blacked out on MLB.com. Makes perfect sense to me.

    1. one and one dont make two
      one and one make one
and Im looking for that free ride to me
      Im looking for youuuuuuu

  2. so, the Rangers and Twins are wearing 'throwback' uniforms tonight. But the Ranger unis look like the same unis they wore last night. And the Twins 'throwbacks' are the grey-pinstriped unis they ditched a few years back. I always liked those road unis. I find the new road grey kind bland, and a carbon copy of the Washington Nationals.

    1. But the Ranger unis look like the same unis they wore last night.

Wonder if they had time to wash them. Not saying they didn't...

    2. These are definitely different from the regular current Rangers' home whites. The normal ones say "Texas" on the front (none of their current unis say "Rangers" any more) in blue with red outlines, they have none of that red front piping, and the sleeve patch is the Texas flag instead of the 90s logo. To refresh your memory, you can see a couple clear pictures from last night here.

    3. I've softened on liking the new road unis. I was always a fan of the one the local nine are currently sporting.

      1. I like the block lettering across the chest. The current script thing seems like something a beer league softball team would wear.

  3. I never heard the term 'shandy' until Leinie's starting advertising it.

I am not drinking a shandy tonight, but a ice cold lemonade with lime wedges in it.

    1. I've had shandy's before. Hm, ok. But a Berliner Weisse with a short of raspberry syrup?? Delish.

  4. Le Tour on the big screen, NBB on MLB with earphones on the Mac.

NBBW regarding Tour de F. NBC commentators: Light blue shirts muy ugly - dark shirts barely passable.

  5. Even though I am four hours from the ballpark in Arlington I can still attest to how effing hot it is outside.

  6. I think the interviews with players and mangers during game play one of the the worst innovations tv has brought to baseball. 99% of the time, it adds nothing to the broadcast.

    1. By far my favorite movie poster/album cover adaptation so far. My favorite Twin in one of my favorites of The Rock's movies - oh yes.

      1. The Rock? Oh, nononono. That is and always will be Joe Don Baker as Buford Pusser (although I will also throw a nod to Bo Svenson in the sequels and short-lived TV series)

        1. That's The Rock's remake. Dad claims that the remake shouldn't be called "Walking Tall" since they changed the main character's name and the location. I countered with that if they had changed the title as well, he would have just claimed it was a rip-off. As it stands, it's in some sort of middle ground.

The Rock's version spawned one of my favorite IMDB summaries, courtesy of Bubba:

When a former member of the U.S. Army Special Forces returns to his small hometown in rural Washington State hoping to realise a childhood dream of working in the local lumber mill, he discovers that much has changed, as the normally tranquil town is now besieged by drugs, outbreaks of violence and a general feeling of malaise and terror, with many pointing a finger at the influence of a crooked casino where his ex-girlfriend now works as a dancer. Seeking to wreak vengeance, with a four-foot-long 4-by-4 in his hand, and righteousness in his heart, the highly-trained soldier, now the county's sheriff, and his deputy, realizes it's time to bust some heads with a very hard piece of wood.

My friends and I now refer to The Rock's weapon of choice as "The 4x4 of Righteousness" and the ax that Neal McDonough uses in the final fight scene as the "Ax of Malfeasance". That's good wordplay.

          1. I didn't mean to imply that the picture was of JDB. But the Walking Tall character is JDB's. I'm with your dad 😉

            1. I knew where you were coming from, being closer to Dad's age than mine 😉 My original argument wasn't which "Walking Tall" was better, just its place within my personal rankings of The Rock's movies. For the records, I enjoy both "WT"s.

              1. Clarification acknowledged and accepted, as proper respect for the cherished memories of your elders' youth has been shown.

That, and my ability to make blended margaritas at the drop of a hat with my new Vitamix, means I can be cool.

        2. That is and always will be Joe Don Baker as Buford Pusser

That's The Rock's DVD cover that Bootsy used, though, which might be why Magoo's mind went there.

  7. Dustin Morse ‏@Twins_morsecode
Joe Mauer has 3 walks tonight & 509 career, just 4 shy of tying Chuck Knoblauch (513) for 6th on the #MNTwins All-Time list.

    1. Chuck took 4573 PAs while Mauer is at 4232. Also, Knoblauch had some really good seasons with the Twins.

      1. I supposed he doesnt get brought up as being an all time great (or even a pretty good) Twins player because of his off the field issues, but the dude was a pretty good player. I remember him as a doubles and stolen base machine.

  8. What, no one heard of Joe Nathan when he was with Minnesota? That's why he went to four All-Star games and finished fourth and fifth in Cy Young voting.

    1. I compared Nathan's stats since his last full season in SF until now to Mariano Rivera's stats over his same age years and the numbers are basically identical. Rivera with slightly better ERA. Nathan with slightly better WHIP. Both with K rates over 9 and low walk rates. Nathan is having a season as good as any he's ever had. If he has a resurgence and pitches at this level for another few years for contending teams, I think he could have a shot at the Hall. Rivera will need to go in before him, of course, but that's a given I would think.

      1. I think many people didn't/don't appreciate how good Nathan was, but Rivera has been doing it for twice as long.

          1. Yes, but his blown save is the specific reason he doesn't have one more. No one ever seems to mention that.

  9. Sure would be nice to have Parmelee available to hit right here. Has Fien thrown a pitch yet?

      1. Yeah, we need to make sure that Burton and Perkins are available for those four-run leads. We'd be in trouble if we had to trust Burnett, Gray and Robertson with a lead of four runs for one or two innings. However, we're good if it's a tie game.

  10. why throw a fastball if the hitters cant come close to hitting the changeup?

  11. Nathan pitching a second inning speaks more for proper bullpen management. Wash may be a bit desperate, but removing your best pitcher when the other team's best hitters are coming up would be stupid.

  12. Wrong Joe won that battle. I always find it interesting when former battery mates face each other. Like, say, Butera vs. Liriano next year...

  13. Well, it was a good game. No disgrace losing to the Rangers in extras. We'll just have to settle for 114-48!
