      1. The giddy reactions of Wells and Harper to winning bronze and silver was perfect. I really enjoyed that.

        1. The giddy reactions of Wells and Harper to winning bronze and silver was perfect. I really enjoyed that. You mean as opposed to this?

          1. I saw somewhere, and I can't remember where or anything, but someone suggested it was possible that with everyone shooting at such high frame rates that math says eventually the photographer would get a picture like this and that this pic is essentially a statistical anomaly. That said, I don't know and she could actually be being pissy.

            1. Funny, I was told by the NBC broadcast crew that only the Russians exhibited diva-like behavior. (whatever the crap that means.)

I feel as if this may be the worst olympics I can recall, and I can feel confident blaming it pretty much entirely on the Peacock.

              1. I enjoyed the two main Russian's bad attitudes.
At one point, the little blonde one looked like she wanted to throw up.
And then on her final even, the balance beam, it was like she said "F--- it" and stopped trying.

            2. She was actually that pissy. It may be due to lack of maturity, but it is night and day the difference between the gymnasts who don't get gold and the track and field participants who don't get gold.

              1. There aren't many T&F winners who are 16 or 17. This whole meme seems to be more of a mole hill than mountain.

                1. true. Also, there seems (to me, anyway) to be a much bigger difference between Olympics-to-World Championships in gymnastics than in track, as well as a much shorter typical career (essentially, all in the barely-pubescent teens) in gymnastics. The best track athletes can earn a good living working the European circuit for a decade or more, regardless of whether they medal in an Olympics, and we've seen a lot of those athletes in multiple Olympics. Repeat Olympic appearances in gymnastics are pretty rare.

I'd have to guess that falling on her butt cost whatsername some pretty heavy coin.

                    1. I saw the Lolo interview on Today this morning and I though she came across very well.

I thought the times article was pretty unfair and poorly timed though, so perhaps I'm biased.

The A team did just fine in the race, but I don't really want anyone pulling a double i.

                2. Right. Spookymilk's dopplenamer is in her first Olympics at age 30.
And, to me it seemed that with that Aussie, that coming in second (almost first!) was huge, like we should just discount her as running a different race like she's Usain Bolt.

    1. We were watching the NBC primetime broadcast and mo chailin said "Isn't one of your internet friends 'Kelly Wells'?" So I got to explain who (I) was too.

    1. He's at #22 with 61 stolen bases currently. Koskie holds #20 with 66 stolen bases. Since he was called up for the May 17 game, he has started 66 of the 72 games. I estimate he will play in 48 of the remaining 52 games, giving him an additional 15 stolen bases. That would give him 42 for the season and 76 in his career. That would place him 15th all-time for the Twins, between Rivas and Gaetti. The 42 in a season would be sixth, narrowly ahead of Carew's 41 stolen bases in 1973. Another season of 40 stolen bases would tie him for sixth with Dan Gladden.

        1. Span has been picked off three times this season and four last after having 10 both in 2009 and 2010, so I don't think it is much of a problem for him anymore.

  1. Preach.

"The geeky side of me was looking at Fangraphs.com, and our hitters have the best strikeout-to-walk ratio in the game," Perkins said. "So we work counts and don't strike out a whole lot.

"Then when you get that hit or they make an error, it's not a two-out error with nobody on. It's a two-out error with the bases loaded. It would not be fun to pitch to this team, I know that."

  2. For those of you who read Canis Hoopus, my go to on the Wolves, Tim Allen (aka TimAllenOnline) has died. He was 29. Unconfirmed reports that it was a suicide.

    1. Sorry for the cross post. Was composing mine (below) when yours went up.

As many have posted at CH, it's amazing how deeply one can feel for someone you've never met and know only via words on a computer screen.

      1. That's all right. I didn't have the link to the story, so that's good you put it up. Just a terrible piece of news.

        1. Despite huge strides - it's not that long ago that people wouldn't dream of discussing such things in public - mental illness remains terribly misunderstood and underrecognized. How terribly sad.

          1. I would hope that if anyone here at the WGOM was struggling with something similar that they would feel this is a safe place to come.

            1. And I think some of us have.
Not that I know of any of us who've been that low.
I've opened up to some in personal emails, that go further than I'd want to in pseudo-anonymous quasi-public.

            2. This is why this is a community. I feel the same way. Some of us are here every day; others show up less frequently; but I hope that people who comment here are willing to reach out at least to individuals, if not the whole WGOM, if they need to.

Hell even if they are lurking and don't want to register a lot of use are very accessible if they want to talk.

I'm always on twitter for any reason at @eschapp. No matter what the reason. Same at gmail if it needs to be not in public.

              1. How long till we start discussing Karl Welzein's reboot of Roadhouse on our movie post, you guys?

                  1. Oops. Not meant to go here. Obviously, I was going to say something in response to yickit's post. Mainly that the site has been a great help to me.

                    1. Mainly that the site has been a great help to me most citizens.

Sorry I wasn't trying to quibble with that sediment.

            3. Let me reiterate that. You can always reach me at pastorjeffa [at] gmail [dot] com. I don't claim to have all the answers, but I can be a listening ear on the phone, by email, or whatever other way you want to communicate. As they told us all the time in seminary, don't suffer in silence. Reach out to someone.

            4. Right. If any of you goofballs were to need my assistance, or be stranded in rural mid-central Minnesota for any reason or have anything they could use my help with in any way, my guest room is yours.

Fair warning, my "guest room" is more along the lines of "my living room couch", but I'm told it's very comfortable.

              1. ditto for the Sactown area (Spooky's failure to call me before staying in a fleabag flophouse in South Sac notwithstanding)

                1. Doc, you're not going to be around the downtown LA scene next friday / saturday night I assume...

                  1. Well I didn't know you yet... And we were staying in a cabin just out of town with my family, so my dad came and helped me anyway.

We would actually be taking the same vacation this year except that my sister is getting married a week from Saturday. Next time I'm up there, we'll look you up.

            5. I mentioned it in a CoC a month back or whatever, but I went through a time like that, all too recently, and ended up going to someone from here. It felt like the easiest thing to do, and it couldn't have had a better effect on me.

      1. It ranks up there for me, because I hate so many adverbs. Suddenly is a huge one for me, especially when used at the beginning of a sentence.

        1. "Suddenly," Suddenly suddenly said.

I'm not sure why you have such an irrational hatred for that word. You need to hate it less and hate literally more IMO.

    1. Actually, I think 'literally' is worse, but that's only because my wife misuses the it constantly. That was actually a pretty good article, though.

      1. Literally, this is the worst transgression against the English language that exists in modern day America.

        1. Guys, cut it some slack. Must "Literally" always be used literally? Can it never be used figuratively?
Sure, it's overused. But that's a different matter.

        1. Actually, what I have suddenly heard people say is the "The question is mute," irregardless of whether that's literally correct.

    2. Damn, I missed a lot of conversations I feel strongly about today.

In this city, for some reason, "barely" is oddly used. If someone got paid today, they say "I just barely got my paycheck." New customers I add into our system start off by saying "I just barely started shopping here."

      1. It's cos it's the desert and a lot of people are near-nekkid, esp in the summer.
"I just barely started shopping here" means, "I used to come here wearing flannel and shoes".

        1. Outside of my work shirts, I can go four days with one shirt because I don't wear it for any more than an hour on any given day. It's so, so hot here.

Today was the worst all season, I think. It was so hot, even being in the pool was worse than being at home when the AC wasn't running.

      1. He was drafted in the first round? Huh. His younger brother (I'm assuming there's only one, but I don't remember) was really good. I can't imagine how much better Devean would have been.

        1. I played against him a lot as kids (and with him some at the park). He was really good but not as good as his older brother, Eddie. Devean had the brilliant idea to grow 8 more inches and that really helped.

          1. I'm not sure even eight inches would have helped Chafe*.

            * I think that's his name. It's been a while and we rarely hung out.

        2. First ever div-3 first rounder.
I was ticked that the Lakers got him.
At the time, they were the only hated team.

  3. So I still haven't heard anything on the job front. On Friday it will have been 4 weeks. I gave a call at the 2 week mark, since everything else had had them getting back to me in a week or less. At what point, if any, should I call again?

    1. Also, for what it's worth, I'm fully aware that at this point, it probably means I'm not getting the job. I haven't quite come to terms with it yet, but I'm aware of it.

      1. I wish I had some advice for you, but all I know about interviewing is that I'm glad I don't have to do it any more, because I was terrible at it.

Keep trying. The right job is out there for you. Hang in there.

        1. Yeah... I'm guessing I'll get a rejection letter eventually. I can see how sending those might not be real high priority though.

          1. I'd look at it this way. If the people running that outfit are so ill-mannered that they can't even give you the courtesy of letting you know you didn't get the job, you probably didn't want to work for them anyway.

            1. I'd love to look at it that way... but in this case... well, I'm pretty sure I want to work there.

    2. Well, one of my co-workers, who is in a related-but-non-attorney position, just literally did a cartwheel outside of my office, since she found herself a job not-here. That made me feel good.

        1. Literally.

I didn't chime in above, but misuse of "literally" is one of my biggest language pet peeves.

          1. You literally despise it huh?

You should call. That is my advice.

I know we haven't had the most engaging conversations, but starting a conversation with a potential employer takes initiative and is usually not frowned upon.

                1. AND I'M DEVISTATED!!!11!!!

Seriously, make the call. Most HR people respect that so long as you don't ramble.

                    1. I think you have my email. I'm happy to talk about this subject in more depth.

                      But probably yes.

      1. If it makes you feel any better the job I have is pretty okay, but the commute is killing me. It's pretty much like driving from downtown Minneapolis to makato's hilltop twice daily. Oh, and I just laid out a bunch of money to interview for a job that I'm not sure if I'll take because the commute is from New Orleans to Los Angeles.

        1. Downtown to Kato makes my one summer temp-work commute of NU to Kato sound like nothing. (But the shift started at 7am, so I had to leave at like 6:15. I was so tired, I drifted asleep a few too many times for comfort. I'd slap myself.)

          But NOLA to LA?

          1. Yeah, I'm flying out to LA to meet with the owners and master printer of a printshop next week. If they offer me enough money for Dr. Chop and I to see each other three times a month then I'll likely take the job. If not, then I'll be content living in NOLA (and not commuting...)

      1. As the Daily Beast wrote, "Averaged among 10,490 athletes, that's enough condoms for every athlete to have sex 15 times over the Olympics' three weeks."

  4. I get home from work, flip on the basketball game, and see Kevin Love gobble up a offensive board and putting it up for a easy lay in. I cant wait for the Wolves season to start.

    1. Honestly, I haven't watched the NBA since Jordan retired, but that may have to change this year.

  5. This isn't related to anything in particular, but I wonder how much actual authority Coach K has over the USA basketball team. It seems like it would be hard for a group of NBA superstars to accept the authority of a college coach, even one as successful as he is.

    1. If Kobe, LeBron and Durant are on board, my guess is they all would fall in line. Plus, from what little I've read, it seems as though Melo, of all people, is a pretty dedicated participant in USA Basketball.

My guess is that Coach K and the swarm of assistants are seen in a pretty friendly light, talking strategy off the court, getting everyone to pretty much nod in agreement, then rolling the ball out there for Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Westbrook, and LeBron to distribute.

      1. I would think the players are screened before they are invited to the Olympic tryouts. If you arent committed to Team USA from day 1, there is no need for you.

        1. USA basketball got embarrassed a few Olympics back and they got serious. Guys are committed for a couple of years before the Olympics. These guys aren't about to screw up after that much time spent. I don't know if Coach K is the driver, but the USA Basketball organization has its poop in a pile.

  6. I have been away from the computer for a couple of days but tomorrow night I will share the tales of sitting next to the Twins bullpen.

  7. Frank Viola sighting at the Olympics. His daughter is performing on the platform diving event.

  8. NU's Ali Bernard wrestles at about 7am. I guess I should see if I can log in with comcast/nbc olympics and show the kids.
I watched her in Beijing (from NU), but that was at about Midnight.
