  1. At MLB.com:

Hit No. 2,874 moves Vizquel past Ruth

Guh-wha?! I know the guy's ageless, but this is pretty impressive. I've never thought he was HOF material (I barely care about such things, but work with me here), but it might be tough to deny him if he cracks 3000.

      1. I believe so. I have a brother-in-law who is a huge Vizquel-for-the-hall supporter. We're talking Rich Lederer type here.

      2. Ah. Probably not time for another 126 hits.

I think that milestone will stand in his way. Everyone likes him and recognizes his defense, but if he gets in, it'll take years.

          1. certain sabermetric types don't think he will or (more pointedly) should get in.

Omar Vizquel is still plugging along in what seems like his 113th season. He isn’t any good at this point, but it wasn’t all that long ago that he was still a defensive standout at shortstop. He was so good in his prime that some people think he should (and will) eventually be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I disagree. Vizquel’s case is particularly relevant to the issue of “peak value,” something we occasionally discuss with regard to players with shorter careers like Sandy Koufax or Duke Snider. That isn’t to say that a player has to be as good as Koufax or Snider to get in the Hall, it is simply to say that players in the Hall should have a truly great peak. Vizquel does not.

            1. Ah, c'mon there has to be a hang-in-there/don't fall apart/cordizonery consideration for the T. Johns/J. Moyer/Fisks out there. Stick it out and eat sunflower seeds for another year.

  2. the difference between Punto and Carroll: Punto slides needlessly into first base while Carroll runs through the base.

  3. Indian sqwaukers reflecting on 1949 CLE team winning 17 in a row extra inning games - and now the Orioles have spun 14 in a row. Go O.

    1. that 49 team had a rotation of Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, Early Wynn and Satchel Paige out of the pen.

  4. Tribe radio guys just told me that the reason the Twins could not get past the first round of the playoffs in the aughts was because they didn't have "power arms" in their rotation.

How quickly they forget Johan Santana.

    1. I think the big reason was that they played the Yankees most of the time, and that matchup heavily favors the pinstripers

  5. On the Grill: 6 oz. salmon cuts marinated in Soy Veh, roasted zucchini, yellow squash, and onion chips, barbecued over lamo Whole Foods wood charcoal. Served along Abymes (Savoy white - not bad).

        1. It's lazy-man good. Whole breasts, which I cut in half and seasoned lightly, then browned before throwing in the crock this morning. Add one can of green enchilada sauce, leave on low all day. Couldn't be easier. Makes great chilaquiles too.

Hmm. Maybe I'll go that route instead of the burritos....

          1. I have to try that - had some green enchiladas a while back - were fabuloso.

We were in Cancun with some friends a year or two back - went into the city for lunch one day - place called La Parilla - a buffet. I found this dish - chicken in some kind of slow-cooked hot sauce - maybe some mole. Best thing I had in Mexico.

  6. I have to admit to not having tuned in for a lot of games lately, and especially not tuning in the radio. I'm at work late tonight and the game is on.

    This needs to be said:
Provus and Atteberry are freaking fantastic together.

    1. I switched over to TIBN from the CLE-feed, and man, the quality of the audio broadcast has much to be desired. It's like they're standing with a mic in the aisles. Are they sitting in the 3rd-base-line seats?

      1. I suppose they make the visitors sit up in the nosebleed press cubes, and give them little sticks to make bat sounds like Ronnie Reagan used to do.

  7. Oh great, Gleeman is live-tweeting Survivor. Now I have to stop paying attention till I can watch it later tonight.

  8. Howdy, all. That HR was one inning too soon. Hendriks needs to get through the bottom of the inning still. He needs to get that first win soon.

  9. Willingham became the 19th Twins player to reach the 110 RBI plateau. (Killer in 1966, Puck in 1992). Player with 111: Killer 1964, Cordova (!!!) 1996, Morneau 2007.

    1. OK, I assumed this meant someone else ejected him first, but it looks like it means he actually wasn't ejected??

    1. Not a factor in today's game, but 36% of Burnett's inherited runners score. For relievers with at least 30 IP, that's good for only 60th (out of 196) this year. For some reason, I figured he would rank much higher.

  10. Limi Hendrix's accent is throwing me. It's obviously quite Aussie, but there's something else in it... Southeastern US maybe?
Compare to my memory of Luke Hughes' full Crocodile Dundee accent.
