October 16, 2012: Family

My sweet little Sour Cream turns five today. The Milkmaid and I talk about having another one occasionally, but if we don't - and I think that's more likely - I will never feel like I have unfinished business. I adore these girls beyond words.

  1. There will be no "Winter Wonderland" today because neither the Venezuelan League, the Mexican League, nor the Dominican League had games scheduled. It appears Monday is generally a day off in Caribbean Leagues.

  2. A thought on the ball game tonight. Nearly everyone thinks Justin Verlander v. the slumping Yankee batters is a slam dunk for Detroit. If I was picking, that's the way I'd go, too. On the other hand, one of the main reasons we love sports is that every time we think we have everything figured out, it all changes. Verlander is human, and the Yankees still have some very good players. If New York won tonight, it would not be a huge shock.

        1. Apparently some idiotic Twins fans were tweeting at PMac wondering what our favorite nine would need to give up to get A-Rod. Ugggggggh.

            1. I saw another article recently suggesting that the Red Sox target Mauer in a trade for a middle of the order bat. You know, when he signed an 8 year deal with no trade protection after the 2009 season, I assumed this B.S. would stop.

              1. to me, it makes total sense. Kenny Williams is always looking for a big splash, semi over-the-hill player. Look at the player he has brought it: Jake Peavy, Adam Dunn, Alex Rios' huge contract, Javy Vazquez, Ken Griffey Jr, Jim Thome.

  3. I haven't said much about my work situation lately, but things have been pretty rough (long story short: hostile work environment created by a particular manager). After summoning the courage to tell the CEO about the problems I was experiencing with our regional manager, an independent investigator has been appointed, and apparently will be interviewing me tomorrow. You always want to believe things will get better on their own, but sometimes they just won't. Part of me is ashamed it took me so long to say something. Part of me is just glad I finally stood up for myself. And part of me is terrified about what the fallout will look like.

    1. I think standing up for what we believe is right is tough, because we tend to worry that we'll doubt out own convictions down the road, wonder if we did the right thing. Usually, it takes repeated abuse (or harm to others) before we do anything. The mere fact that you were listened to is encouraging and shows that your reaction wasn't flippant.

As Jeff usually says, even if the fallout is bad in the present, you will likely find a better place in the future and be better off for it.

    2. Philo - if the fallout is that your employment becomes compromised, you're retaliated against (or something like that), shoot me an e-mail at bmjohnson327 [at] hot mail dot com. I do intake for an employment law firm and would be happy to pass your info along. I can't promise anything of course and they may just refer you to someone else, but I do have access to a fairly substantial network or employment lawyers.

      1. No, since I only learned it this morning. Was there discussion yesterday? I must have been in a fog.

  4. spook, NT Jr also turns 5 today in the Tubbs household. I share your feelings (except its only boys in the Tubbs household)

  5. The really awesome Indian restaurant in town, which is a bit too far to drive to on lunch, has started selling food in our cafeteria once a week. This pleases me greatly.

    1. Perhaps not a bad idea for Rodriguez. He has the platoon disadvantage against Verlander, who also happens to be a really good pitcher and quite possibly could go deep into the game.

      1. Sure, but Rodriguez has a 1.000+ OPS vs Verlander in his career and I don't know how much I believe in Eric Chavez.

        1. In 37 PAs. To be fair, he does have a 2.381 OPS against Verlander this year. But, only a .250 OPS* in the postseason.

          * I think. I'm not really sure what the denominator in OPS is.

  6. Hey look, a US World Cup Qualifier is on a station that I get! Looks like Canada lost 8-1(!).

    1. I'm only a quarter of the way into it, but the talking about positions players play reminds me of the analysis linked here where players were grouped into something like 13 "positions".
