February 4, 2013: Moving On

Harbaugh beat Harbaugh and we're now free to focus on the lost Timberwolves season and a potentially exciting Wild season (and either way, both sports generally bring it in the playoffs).

Can baseball really only be nine weeks away? Time to pick a team, dudes.

  1. I think TMBG's Facebook post said it best:

And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming, and the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor shall be lifted - nevermore!

  2. I saw someone last night say that Jim Harbaugh seems like the kind of guy who would unplug the Nintendo when John was winning. I agree. I'm not really happy about all the Ray Lewis garbage that was in the media, but I do like that Jim Harbaugh didn't win a Super Bowl.

  3. Who said it:

Agents are probably going to hate me for saying it. You’re not very valuable when you’re making $20 million. When you’re Mike Trout, making the minimum, you are crazy valuable. My first six years, before I was a free agent, I was very valuable. But there’s nothing you can do that can justify a $20 million contract.

    Spoiler SelectShow
    1. when I read that article the other day, I was thinking to myself 'if you think you are overpayed, why not renegotiate your contract to what you think you are worth.'

          1. I wouldn't renegotiate a contract if I was a player, just as an owner wouldn't renegotiate if I was underpaid.

        1. oh yeah, I mean who would. it was just my thinking while reading it.
also, (as stick included in the quote) when you are young and good, you are underpaid. so it all evens out in the end.

    2. But there’s nothing you can do that can justify a $20 million contract.
Tell that to Joe, who justified his $23 million dollar last year just fine.

      1. Yes, it is possible to justify a big contract, but I just put the quote out there because of who said it.

  4. so the Super Bowl in at the Meadowlands next year. The halftime show has gotta be Bruce Springsteen.

  5. I used my Super Bowl free time to do my taxes last night. I think that was time better spent. (because I get a refund. It would be less well spent if I had to pay in.)

    1. This is not true. Having to pay in is like getting an interest free loan from the government. Getting a refund is like giving the government an interest free loan. It's fun to get the refund, but the preferable position is to keep your money for as long as possible.

      1. Getting a refund is like giving the government an interest free loan.

While true, I prefer to think of it as a forced savings plan for not-much-less-interest-than-I'd-get-from-a-bank. At least it makes me feel better about it.

        1. Yeah, that's the view I take, too. I'm willing to, right now, risk that refund by giving it to the gov't for a few months. Plus, it makes it a lot easier to set aside tuition money for the trinket. Of course, if there comes a year when I am supposed to get a refund and they say, "sorry, can't do it." then I'll change my withholding.

          1. Dude, if you haven't started a 529 for the trinket, seriously consider doing so ASAP. Dollar-cost averaging, and many plans allow as little as $50/mo for minimum periodic deposits via automated, electronic transfer. Or, of course, you can make the deposits "manually" in pretty much any amount.

Some states (wisconsin included, I believe) give a tax CREDIT up front for deposits (or a deduction up front) off of state income taxes. California, alas, does not.

            1. Have no fear, I did, in fact, start a 529. I put the child tax credit in there, although I haven't heard about this tax credit for donations thing.

      2. My knowledge of tax law is basically 0%, but my experience is that paying no withholding makes the IRS demand more money. It's been a few years, but I recall you needed to pay at least 90% of expected taxes to avoid getting hit with some other fee.

        1. Yes, of course. You have to withhold a certain amount, but the best outcome is to withhold the least that you can (not that I do this).

    2. My goal with taxes is to get just enough of a rebate to make it feel like I'm being paid to do the work. Unfortunately, when we refinanced to a 15yr mortgage, we're going to owe this year

    1. Some time after my 50th birthday, the big club will be fun to watch again. (I'm not that far from it, sigh.)

      1. Its a damn shame part of the farm club won't be in Beloit anymore. (not that I went to many games in that dump anyway. Northwoods League, FTW.)

          1. Madison sells 7-game packs that come with a buffet 30 minutes prior to first pitch running through 30 minutes after, a (very nice) hat, and a guarantee you'll get whatever is being given away that game, all for just $100 per person (kids under 5 need no ticket). Plus, parking is free, the parking lot is great for tailgating, and the beer is far better than Miller Park.

            1. I can vouch for cheaptoy's recommendation of the parking lot's tailgating charm and the quality of the beer selection (I've even had homebrewed root beer there...)

            2. Hrm.... Well, I know that the good Dr. and I will be in the cities this summer, but a trip to Madison to take in a ballgame that may feature a winning Twins connection might just be doable.

              1. It's unlikely any future Twins will be playing in Madison. But, if you are around and want to watch entertaining baseball and drink high quality brews, then by god, let me and CH know.

                1. Oh, snap. How do y'all feel about a saints game? Mini caucus at a saints game sounds like a good idea to me.

          2. I didnt go to any games last year, but I have enjoyed going to Mankato Moondogs games. $15 goes a long ways at Franklin Rodgers Park.

        1. if you listen closely, he does say "di". i'm uncaring on any further particular spellings and amenable on any changes. maybe sean should create a poll.

      1. I'd avoided that commercial for awhile because of the buzz, but that banner was enough to get me interested. I rather liked it.

Is that the new model year Beetle in the ad? The flattened roof makes it look like a bloated Porsche 911.

        1. I thought I was the only one who thought it looked like a Porche. Glad to know I'm not totally nuts.

  6. I've read a lot of criticism of the job Phil Simms did on yesterday's broadcast. I really don't understand that. To me, what he was last night was who he always is. He's nice, he's bland, he's inoffensive, and he has very little to say. He neither adds to the broadcast nor detracts from it. Which, in my opinion, puts him ahead of many broadcasters I could name.

    1. I didn't watch it, but I've alawys found the Nantz/Simms crew to be boring. They're not actively terrible like Buck/Aikman, though. Honestly, I wish NBC had the Super Bowl every year. That's the best of the crews in the NFL today. Not that that's saying a lot.

    2. the last 49ers play (was is a PI or not) pretty much sums up Phil Simms: 'the more angles I see the more confused I get'

Its makes me appreciate the Al Michaels/Cris Collinsworth pairing even more. Collinsworth does a great job breaking a play down quickly.

Nantz was alright, but surprised me with his knowledge at the end with whether the Ravens should take a safety, then suggestion the Niners fair catch the safety kick for an unblocked FG attempt

  7. interesting note about London Fletcher buried in Peter King's MMQB column

    ...
Fletcher didn't disappoint when the subject of HGH testing -- which the NFL Players Association has steadfastly balked at, claiming the NFL's proposal for testing is flawed -- came up.

"I've got a message for my union: Stop the posturing and get the HGH testing done," Fletcher said. "It's time to get it done. I think it's more prevalent in our league than you would think. There's probably more than 10 percent of guys taking HGH. And we have to get it out. As a player who's [been in the league] for 15 years and has done it the right way, I want a good, clean game. I want a level playing surface. I don't want to have all this posturing and 'Oh, well, can we trust the credibility of this guy, this test?' ... Stop the madness and let's get the test done."

    1. London used to live 4 houses down from me here when he played with the Rams, and he's an upright guy. I obviously can't confirm whether he's clean or not, but I know I'd much rather have him on my team than Ray Lewis, for example.

    1. umm, ok. Does he mean the two whole freakin' verses before the chorus? Or does he mean the two whole lines in the chorus before the first "staying alive" line?

  8. lastly, I loved the comments. Sample:
