Ugh, this is one of my least favorite songs in the world. I liked it for like 3 weeks my freshman year of college (or thereabouts), and every time I've heard it since has been too many.
College? This song was a hit in 1991. Unless you're older than I figure, you were listening to an already overplayed well-past-shelf-life song. Unless you were listening to the Cher cover, which was released in 1995. That'd be worse in different ways though.

I did a lot of that my first year.
My sister's first semester at college, her randomly-assigned roommate listened solely (90% of the time) to Barenaked Ladies and Dave Matthews Band. Then-SNR* fell into a depression/anxiety pairing and dropped out a few weeks into the second semester. These weren't completely unrelated. I hope your roommate made it through okay
My randomly-assigned freshman roommate listened to death metal and hardcore punk (and some jokey variations: death rockabilly). By the end of junior year (when I opted to room with him again, not realizing this meant rooming with his GF too), this was my favorite thing about him.
*Now SNF. 2 5/12 years my junior. Almost the exact same age difference between CER and HPR.
Oh crap, I just looked up the roommate and the GF in FB and found them both. Wondering whether to friend request him or her.

I did enjoy getting to know more about it, but it really wasn't for me.
There were a few I dug, but I can't remember what they are.
One in particular stands out, something grungier than his typical, but that's about all I remember. Maybe the band name was taken from Persian or something, and one of the album covers (the one I preferred) had maroon and gold on it and I think a skull or a skull-like face. But those are half-memories and I can't be sure if they're genuine or an amalgam of several different things.
I won't deny it isn't for everyone. I mean, hell, there's some I can't even get into.
Definitely some components of that story in my frosh experience. My randomly assigned roommate solely listened to DMB, but he was the one who fell into a severe depression and, for all intents and purposes, dropped out (by never, ever leaving the room). Somehow, he turned himself around and got a M.D.
My randomly assigned roommate was on something like an all metal diet. Most of it older metal. My music at least improved throughout the year, as I added more and more outdated tracks, and then mixed 'em in with my oldies too. His tastes didn't change. He didn't leave the room. He moved on after 1 year.
