  1. A Randy Wittman coached team lost a basektball game in Minnesota last night. I feel nostalgic.

  2. Without directly criticizing the Gophers*, I want to point out that Joel Maturi could have raided NDSU for both Tim Miles (now at Nebraska) and Craig Bohl (still at NDSU, now 2 time defending national champion with 19 returning starters). Instead, he hired Tubby Smith and Tim Brewster (and gave them both extensions!!!111!! and Pam Borton!!!!!). The Huskers will improve in basketball. Miles is a good coach.

Joel Maturi was so incompetent, he has ruined my antipathy for the Gophers by making it no fun anymore.

*Not direct criticism because Maturi no longer employed by University.

You might want to check your facts there, Boss.

    2. I grant you the Craig Bohl argument but I'm not sold on Tim Miles. Nebraska was just as bad as Minnesota last night and nothing I've seen has convinced me that Tim Miles is a D-1 basketball savior. Also at the time the Tubby signing was well received by just about everyone, in fact most thought that Tubby fell into their lap. I don't think AT THE TIME that anyone would have argued Tim Miles over Tubby.

  3. I'll be heading to Huron, SD today to watch the Sully Buttes Chargers girls basketball team play in the state tournament. Next week, I'll be heading to Aberdeen, SD to watch the Potter County Battlers boys basketball team play in the state tournament. It's been a pretty good year for basketball in the Wheatland Parish.

  4. I realize that there's more disparity in talent in NCAA than in the NBA, but I try not to get to worked up over a ranked team losing to an unranked team. The 2003 Tigers were historically and they beat several good teams. If Penn State plays Michigan 100 times, they probably lose 90 of them.

It's why I love baseball so much. 162 games seems to be enough to really sort out any luck. (and then they go play a tournament anyway)

  5. Thanks, Dennis Rodman.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — North Korea vowed on Thursday to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States, amplifying its threatening rhetoric as U.N. diplomats voted on whether to level new sanctions against Pyongyang for its recent nuclear test.

Dennis Rodman might have a future in international relations.

Forgive me if I don't click on that link.

      1. I saw the breakdown on Deadspin the other day. It would absolutely be best for you to continue not clicking that link.

  6. so I am somewhat recovered from this cold (felt better today than yesterday. progress!) AND I was supposed to be on a jury tomorrow but the case has been changed to a 'court trial'.
everything is coming up Milhouse today.

      1. How would you like to be on the Jodi Arias jury? 15 days (and counting) of the defendant testifying about killing her boyfriend.

        1. My brother's boss has been in trial since MLK Day and the Government is expected to rest THIS WEEK!

          1. Well, he's getting compensated at least. Those jurors have had to listen to her pathetic story for three weeks for nothing more than a stipend.

        2. I've seen this name. Is this connected to the mysterious disappearance of Twins prospect David Arias a good 15 or so years ago?

    1. Just received my notice for jury duty last night. My term will be from April 1 through April 19. Hopefully no big cases will coming to trial in Sarpy County.

  7. Interesting...

Jim Peterson was asked on Twitter if he's asked Adelman why Chris Johnson doesn't play more. His response:

  8. I'm thinking that the pitching situash is going to be just about as bad as last year, but Hicks could be reason enough to pay attention in 2013, you guys.

    1. I wonder how his defense will be. Over 95% of his games have been in CF, and he doesn't seem to have been held back by his glove, so the Twins seem to believe in his defense. His bat seems good enough to play in CF if he's an average defender there. Hicks has had roughly the same progression through the minors as Hunter, and his hitting numbers compare favorably:

      .270/.334/.417, 17.6% SO%, 7.0% BB% -- Hunter, minors
      .271/.379/.421, 20.1% SO%, 14.8% BB% -- Hicks, minors

Hicks is striking out a little more than Hunter did, but has a huge, huge edge in walks, which makes me more comfortable with his ability to translate his numbers to the majors. That kind of strikeout rate coupled with a good walk rate usually indicates that he has the potential to hit for more power in the majors than the minors (like Hunter has.)

Hunter had 14.3 SB/150G at a 56.6% success rate, and Hicks has had 28.9 SB/150G at a 69.1% success rate. Running more often at a better success rate indicates either an edge in speed, an edge in baserunning smarts, or both. Either way, it's a good sign.

Overall, it's completely reasonable to give Hicks a shot in the majors this year based on what he's done in the minors so far.

      1. I'm sure it's guaranteed he will play for the Twins this year, just not when. Stashing him in the minors for a month would make a lot of sense financially, even if he were to become a Super 2.

                  1. That's how slow-pitch softball should work, except that opposite-field HRs are the only HRs that count as HRs, and if you pull a ball over the fence, it should go as an automatic double.

            1. Just thinking that - line from today:

IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
              2.1 8 6 6 1 1 0 10.50

              (edit: tables take some practice...)

                1. lets see then...

IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
                  2.1 8 6 6 1 1 0 10.50

                  Sweet - Thanks!
edit: just wish I could have been practicing with a more positive set of stats...

Should have used Hicks' batting line instead!

        1. I can't wait until he signs a long term, big money contract and half the fanbase turns on him.

          1. If he is the Opening Day center fielder, then his free agent years conveniently start the season after Mauer's contract end.

    2. Matt Gelb ‏@magelb
Aaron Hicks has three home runs today. Before the game, a National League scout tabbed him as his AL ROY choice.

    1. I've been trying to talk Sheenie out of seeing that show but having little success.

      1. I'm so sorry.

Totally unrelated, but I'm considering going to the Pissed Jeans show at the Triple Rock on Friday April 19th. Would anyone else be interested in that show?

    2. is it supposed to be ironic that that link says:

All forms of delivery will be delayed

  9. I am going to Arizona in a couple weeks. My mom was diagnosed with multiple myeloma a month or so ago. It was basically two weeks after my dad retired.

She has been having radiation treatments on a tumor near her spine on the back of her neck. She is not supposed to have any falls, sudden movements, etc. Two days ago, a guy decided to floor his Mustang coming around a corner. He slammed into their car while they were at a stoplight. It sounds like they are ok physically but it was definitely the worst I had ever heard my dad. I think the piling on just got to be too much. I was really worried that there was more going on but after talking to my sister and following up with my parents, it sounds like everything is the same.

It really sucks to be so far away but there are some positives with them being stuck in Arizona. My sister just moved to the south rim of the Grand Canyon last fall, they don't have to worry about slipping on ice, and there is a mayo in Scottsdale. I guess I just need to look at the bright side. It is just tough to not be able to shoot down to their house for a quick weekend visit. Especially since both are pretty private so I sometimes wonder if I know everything.

    1. They're in my prayers, Alg.

I'm lucky to see my parents once or maybe twice a year, but I'm luckier that my youngest brother lives a block away from them and can lend them a helping hand when needed.

    2. Whether near or far away, dealing with parents who are elderly and/or having health problems is not easy. You are in our prayers.

  10. Drew Butera just hit a 2-run homer for Italy to tie the game 4-4 against Mexico in the WBC.

  11. This man has a national morning sports talk show on the 4ltr radio:

      1. Shopping at Best Buy instead of finding deals online? The guy just doesn't know how to save, does he?
