March 9, 2013: Madness

Alright, guys. I updated the March Madness Pick 'Em league. If you played last year, you've been invited using the email you used then. If you want to jump in, let me know. Don't worry - nobody knows what they're doing.

  1. Well, the Sully Buttes Chargers' championship run ended last night, as they lost to the Warner Monarchs 47-38. It was mostly a matter of size--Warner had five girls who were 6' to 6'2", while our tallest girl is 5'10". Warner simply pounded the ball in the middle and we couldn't stop them. Warner's girls are good, but if they were that good and three inches shorter we'd have beaten them. As it was, our only hope was to have a hot shooting night, and it didn't happen. Still, the girls played hard and gave it a good effort, which is all you can do. They play for third place tonight.

      1. no kidding. I live in a community of 50k with two public h.s. Across the two high schools, there were exactly zero girls as tall as 6'0" in the two basketball programs.

  2. Citizens, remember to set your clocks forward one hour tonight. (Unless you are in Arizona--Navajo reservation excepted--or Hawaii.) If you're a stickler for accuracy, you can stay up to change your clocks at exactly 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

      1. Ooh . . . I did that accidentally today! It turns out that running the self-clean cycle on the oven isn't a good idea in the aftermath of a pizza catastrophe in which sauce and cheese meld themselves with the oven bottom. But I can confirm that the smoke detectors are in fine form.

  3. Watching Chavez redux shows down here (Puenta del Este). Track suits a'plenty.

  4. If you have MLB.tv, you could watch Jamey and the Red Wings take on the Pirates today.

  5. Upon the constant mention of it in this here basement, I picked up a single bottle of this on my quarterly Surdyk's run this morning.
Since I've only got one bottle, I'm wondering if anyone would recommend which temperature to drink it at. I'm thinking cool, not cold.

I'm saving it for when I finish my taxes, which are taxing this year. Taxact.com now wants me to itemize non-monetary donations, when before they've been cool without that as long as the total's under a certain amount. We gave away some decent stuff this year, including a crib that we bought new and only needed for just the two months between LBR needing hers and AJR moving to her bad. Due to what I've done in the past, I haven't kept good records of all these things like what and when.

      1. Sadly, I was planning on doing my taxes today, but, alas, the State is warning us not to use TurboTax. Instead, I'll just procrastinate.

        1. I just finished my taxes and was prompted to share this info via facebook. I'll let y'all decide how I felt about that. Hint: I'm not happy about it.

          1. How would you do that anyways? Hack someone else's account and just post "Meat just finished his taxes!"? How would anyone know what to do with that info?

            1. Yeah, enjoy it. If memory serves it's served cool, not cold, at the porterhouse, and is best paired with another oyster stout.

      2. I've already paid for Taxact for the year. This is the first time I've had any problem with the service.

    1. Also, Italy is 2-0 in their pool and play the USA (0-1) tonight with a chance to clinch advancing.

I can't quite figure out the scenarios if they lose: too many beers. Canada (0-1) now leads Mexico (1-1) by one. Let's try this:
Assume: USA (1-1) def ITA (2-1)
Scenario 1: CAN (1-1) def MEX (1-2). Then the winner of USA-CAN is in with ITA
Scenario 2: MEX (2-1) def CAN (0-2). Then if USA def CAN in the final, there's a 3-way 2-1 tie and ITA could be out on tiebreakers.
So a win by Canada puts Italy in the next round.

A win by CAN can also helps the USA:
      1) If USA loses today because then there could be a 3-way 1-2 tie for the second advancing team from the pool.
      2) If USA wins today, there's still no way for a 3-way 2-1 tie.

        1. So, Italy advances and the M&M boys play against each other tomorrow knowing one goes home.

  6. The GW-Dayton game today had me actually pulling out my hair. It was the most bonkers game I've seen since Game 163. GW missed its last seven free throws (and missed twenty-two for the game, I believe). GW had a shot rattle around and rim out at the end of regulation. Then, down one in overtime, GW missed a layup with 3 seconds left but a player had an EMPHATIC (absolutely going to be on ESPN tonight) put-back dunk for the lead. Then, Dayton got the ball inbounded and a player drilled a corner three just after the buzzer sounded.

That's just extraordinarily condensed version because there were about fifty bizarre other moments (including some of the worst officiating imaginable) throughout.

    1. Here's the game-winner (THUNDERSLAM!):

    1. Drilling a guy after a warning to both benches on the previous pitch doesn't seem to me to be the smartest thing in the world.

Canada-Mexico, a rivalry to the death.

          1. Right, I was very happy to see him lurking at the rear in a sweatshirt.

              1. That Mexico team doesn't do 'subtle' well.

Luis Cruz even animated what he wanted Aceves to do to Tosoni.

      1. And here we sit, right between these two behemoths, 99% of us unawares of the strife, but just as likely to be caught in the crossfire of any shots that get fired.

  7. Oh geez. Yadier Molina moves his elbow out to get hit. Ump thankfully didn't give him first base.

      1. But makes a nice catch to end the seventh and preserve the Puerto Rican team's 3-2 lead.

            1. Heh, I stopped using that one a couple of months ago and used a random picture from MPR of the Duluth flood last summer.

    1. And scores on a wild pitch after twice having to slide back to his bag to prevent being picked off. Some things never change.

  8. I see that the corpses of J.C. Romero and Juan Rincon pitched for Puerto Rico and Venezuela today. That brings back memories.

  9. The Nuggets are doing their best to make this game competitive tonight.

    1. Alexi Shved has hit the wall

there is so much sport on tv tonight. the Wolves are like my 3rd or 4th option.

        1. If it wasn't for Rubio there would be no reason at all to watch this team right now.

        2. Of course the only close game on tonight is Rockets/Suns so I will get to watch Wes and SCB.

        3. according to Twitter, the refs have taken over in the 3rd. with both coaches getting T'd and Rubio!?!!?

          1. also, the Wolves radio guy AL Horton is just ripping into the poor refs on twitter. its kinda funny.

  10. Kaat avers that the Nationals would have made the World Series with Strasburg. He's one pitcher, and they lost in the DS. Boo to conventional thinking.

  11. I don't understand the focus on Joe v. Justin in the USA v Canada game. It would be the most congenial rivalry ever if it was one.

      1. I was just wondering if there were any Mexicans left on the Twins roster, so that when WBC players get back to their clubs, there's strife. But I can't think of any.

  12. Pat Venditte sighting! Most disappointed that he can only throw left-handed right now.
