2013 NCAA Tournament Proper – Day 1

I don't have to work until Saturday morning, so today I'm stuffing my face, drinking cheap beer, and watching the NCAA Tournament all day. I haven't watched any college basketball this year, but much like the NFL, the spectacle of the Tourney/Super Bowl drags me in. If you wish to join me in discussion, here's the place. If college basketball isn't your thing, that's cool too, just please don't come in here and harsh everyone's mellow.

  1. A10 already 1-0! The conference this year was absolutely stronger than the Pac10 and SEC this season, and outside of a the dregs at the bottom (Duquesne and Fordham, will you ever win?), matches up with the ACC. Only the B1G and rotting corpse of the Big East was clearly better this season. It's too bad that those jerks like Georgetown are ruining everything.

            1. Ended the day 4-0. Let's see if Temple can make it a perfect first round game for all conference teams.

              1. Don't forget he lives close enough to Canada now that things are just done differently.

          1. where I live, Jeopardy is on NBC at 4:30, Wheel of Fortune is on 2 CBS stations at 6:30

      1. Only Creighton from the MVC has been affected so far. Of the schools you follow, Butler, after whoring itself out joining the A10 this year, is further whoring itself out and bailing on the A10 after just one season.

        1. My brother and I are both Drake guys (mc also, but her interest in basketball is nearly nil) and Boog's GF is a UNI girl, so that game is always good for a bit of smack talk. I'd be more saddened by losing that one than I am Creighton.

          1. I'd be bummed if that happens too. I wonder what'll happen to the conference. I assume they'll go after someone to replace the Jays.

              1. And North Dakota State. I would love it if those two schools go to the Missouri Valley.

...adding, NDSU (and to a lesser extent, SDSU because of football and but also because of their basketball program) should have some leverage seeing as how they've raised the conference's profile in football. (They are both in the Mo. Valley in football but not basketball.)

This would really stick it to UND, because it could have been them, but they wouldn't go with NDSU to D-I. SDSU did and NDSU needs to make sure that SDSU goes where they go.

                    1. For USD to go, I think it would have to be all three. I can't imagine the MVC taking USD ahead of either SDSU or NDSU.

  2. My MMOD feed* is about 2 min. behind the TV. This could prove useful to get to interesting games.

*Only 4 free hours w/o a cable login. BS. Hopefully, 2 laptops+incognito mode should help.

      1. Incognito/private mode will clear any cookies or identifying information when restarting the mode/browser. Assuming that's how they track you (seems reasonable), should be able to continue indefinitely with only short breaks every four hours.

    1. I watched the end of the Gonzaga game. He absolutely needs to stop talking. He was a terrible color man.

  3. I'm chatting with my old roommate, discussing beer strategy, and I got to drop this:

I nearly bought ice, then I though, F*** that I have access to a zamboni

    1. In my book, "I have access to a zamboni" is a winning response to almost any situation.

    1. I picked very few "upsets" the first round, probably less than 3. Bucknell was one of them.

      1. because the WCHA expanded a few years back (UNO, Bemidji) and never bothered changing the name of their tourney.

        1. Coming from many of the same math-challenged schools that have 12 (soon 14) teams in the Big Ten.
That said, I think they should change it for next year.

  4. First Ezele (sp?) the double-zero on Creighton the last couple of years and now this guy on Wichita State. Does the Missouri Valley corner the market on goggled players?

  5. I realized that in my bracket, the only way for me to win is to root against the Gophers. I picked Florida to win it all, and the Gophers would face them in the second round. Good thing I ain't got money on this.

    1. Even when I don't care and pick with zero thought, Pitt still manages to make my bracket uglier. There was a game a few years ago, back when I did really get into the tournament, where Pitt was a high seed (maybe #1 or 2?) and lost in the last few seconds in the dumbest possible way involving fouling a guy on the other team on a rebound, or something like that. That was the end of my ability to watch college bball without seeing the glaring talent drop-off.

      1. That was when they fouled Butler on a rebound (after Butler fouled them at half-court with 1.5 seconds left).

        1. Yes, that's the one! Ugh, that would rank highly on the stupidest basketball plays of all time list. I think I had them in the final four that year! In a pay bracket! That I would have won if not for that!

        1. Austin made 10 of 11 free throws in overtime to hold off Marshall 68-65 and advance to Saturday’s Class 3A championship game against DeLaSalle.

        1. Yea, I presume the Spamtowners will be distinct underdogs tomorrow. But they can shoot and are battle-tested.

        1. from what Ive seen of Memphis this year, they have athletes but not a lot of basketball IQ. They shoot like 60% from the free throw line. One of those small schools who play fundamental basketball AND can hit their shots should easily beat them.

    1. It's going to be a bad day if Marquette loses - last named partner still active in the firm was at Marquette for both undergrad and law school.

      1. Austin star Joe Aase headed to Davidson on scholarship next year. Don't know whether he has the quickness to excel at that level, but he's got good range and hops.

  6. ok, I can see Memphis making a stupid TO late, but Davidson? wow!

    OH MY MARQUETTE!

    1. What was the turnover? The pbp on Yahoo only showed the Marquette 3 followed by the layup.

      1. Davidson threw the ball half way down the court, but the pass was a bit errant and Davidson guy touched the ball on the out of bounds line.

          1. yeah, I thought I had Bucknell winning, but I was wrong.
I do have Akron beating VCU, so I wont be perfect after tonight

  7. Harvard-New Mexico has been a whale of a game
Montana getting smoked by Syracuse. On Selection Sunday, one CBS chirper (Seth Davis I think) proclaimed that Montana win.

  8. Harvard up by 6 with 48 ticks left
could be a late night bracket explosion everywhere

  9. oh.my.gosh.
    HARVARD!
I should have never trusted New Mexico. Steve Alford is their coach

    1. Ugh, New Mexico was my sleeper team - all the way to the Elite 8. Looks like nibbish and Uncle Walt suffered the same fate as me. At least we're not DG, losing a Final Four team.

Surprisingly, NM is the only loss that messed up any brackets into the Elite 8. All the other incorrect picks stop at 16.
