Game 8: Turn on the Lights

Holy cats, a night game! (Maybe. If it isn't rained out, and based on the weather report, that's a very real possiblity.)

Mike Pelfrey vs. Jeremy Guthrie

My first ever game log and it comes against a Jeremy. Fortunately, it also comes in the second game of a series after an opening loss, so I expect a solid, 4-3 victory for the Twins tonight. Maybe. If it isn't rained out.

This will be the first start for Pelfrey since his Wichita State Shockers were removed from that thing that is named after March but not fully contained within March. Hopefully he's had enough time to get over the loss so he can throw some innings against the Royals.

More importantly, Hicks wasn't with the organization when the whole Jeremy curse began, so I fully expect him to hit two doubles and a home run tonight. More realistically, I don't. But, I've been hearing a load about sending him down to Rochester. I don't know his "make-up", but I don't see a problem with letting him hack his way through the whole season barring The Minnesota Curse injury. He can always gain confidence with the extra games against the Astros. Now, it'll be a different story when he strikes out in the bottom of the ninth of Game 7 of the World Series. We'll cross that bridge when we get there, though.

    1. The Twins are the Twins and all, but the Wild are in a pretty exciting playoff seeding chase. If I had a reliable way to watch the NHL, this would be tough.

  1. KC sqwakers:

Yesterday 1st home opener win since 2008 'gainst yanquis.
So far: 0 errors on 240 opportunities; 6 walks vs. 47 SO.
Mauer still waiting on that first RBI.

We got some thunder-bumpers coming into the Mid-west don't we?

    Pussy homer!

  2. KC radio cats suggesting that umps are calling strikes to beat the storm.

  3. I'm going to see the Nationals play the Ass Butts on Thursday. I'm looking forward to it. I've never been to their stadium, but hope to go there a lot now that I live in the area.

  4. I know Anderson didn't mean contact when he said "pitch to contact", but it seems he needs to tell the Twins pitchers that too.

  5. Um, maybe we start working on those thunderstorms. Any suggestions? Rain Man?

  6. Crappy Twins starting pitching is not nearly as annoying as trying to put a cd onto an iPod using iTunes.

  7. The Dazzelman talking about watching videos and having people point out what people are doing wrong, reminded me of Otis.

After my dad died, I got it in my head to get back into duck hunting, which I had done with my dad, and always enjoyed (waking up at 5AM, scalding coffee, freezing, you know, pleasantry).

I bought a gun (Remington Wingmaster 870, rocked) and started going to the Forest Lake Gun Club to practice.

I arranged to get lessons cause my trap/skeet performance sucked. I was assigned to Otis.

Otis took me out, and after a basic eye/finger test, decided to put some Scotch tape over my prominent (left) eye, to force me to use my right eye.

Then we went to the Skeet range.

    Me: Pull
    Boom
    Otis: Missed that.

    Me: Pull
    Boom
    Otis: Missed that.

    Me: Pull
    Boom
    Otis: Missed that.

    Yeah, thanks, Otis!

  8. The Royals just gave us a big graphic on the three errorless teams. "The Royals are known for their defense...the Tigers and Red Sox are not." Shouldn't this give you at least a hint that errors don't say much?

  9. Is anyone else having mlb.tv problems tonight? It tells be "The game will being shortly". This seems like maybe the game will restart as a favor to Mike Pelfry. I doubt that is true though.

    1. ehh, nevermind. I was able to get it on the ol' computer instead of the ps3.

  10. Gutrhie a Senior Citizen on this Royals Roster

Shakespeare couldn't have coined that one.

    1. According to the repository "Iambic rhythms come relatively naturally in English."

      1. "Last July, he won his 900th game as a manager. If you do that, it's proof you're doin' everything. You're checkin' the weather...you're checkin' the temperature of your players..."

        1. To be fair, the guy has to follow the Royals. Gardy probably does look like a frickin genius when compared to Ned Yost.

    1. You like the raspy voice on that cat? Not as good as the guy on Big Lebowski, but still good.

      1. I've said before, he reminds me of that one guy from Office Space. You know--the one who was doing the drywall at the new McDonalds.

        1. That character only, though. Diedrich Bader doesn't sound like that normally.

What is Diedrich Bader up to? I loved him on that movie, and, well, in general, as a comedic actor. I think he was one of the stars of Outsourced, right? I never saw that, so his floundering might be my fault.

          1. Yeah, I was specifically referring to his character. He did a pretty tremendous job in that role. I never saw Outsourced either. Maybe I should put it in my queue.

  11. I don't know how much more of this effusive Gardy praise I can handle from the KC broadcast team.

    1. You could always switch to the Twins broadcast. They aren't talking about anything.

      1. 5 starts will always be awful. 5 starts will always be great. It is the other 20 that make you the pitcher you are.

          1. Ah, a play on the old, pointless "you'll win sixty and you'll lose sixty. It's what you do with the others..."

Man, baseball is full of really stupid people. It's charming, in a way.

      2. Yeah I switched back to the TIBN blather that I at least know and don't have to run thru foreign translation.

  12. I'm watching the Wild. Is there a harder sports job than hockey goalie? (soccer goalie maybe being close.)

    1. I honestly can't imagine that pressure. Ten minutes of doing nothing? Sure! But you'd better be completely ready at a second's notice.

      1. And ready to get in front of a tiny, speeding disc with a bunch of dudes in huge pads blocking your view. I can completely understand when these guys are a little weird off the ice.

      1. The only WWE Raw I've been able to watch this year (I keep up with it by reading Stroud on withleather) saw the most decorated jobber in history, Antonio Cesaro, get some serious revenge on a superstar by whipping him back and forth into a wall like a sack of door knobs. That was a good Raw.

          1. I was being mostly sarcastic (why I said most decorated) since everytime I see a result, he's lost.

            1. Huh, weird. He wins more often than he loses. WWE is kind of keeping him in the background at the moment for some weird reason, but he'll be a main eventer at some point.

              1. Is he winning on non-Raw's then? Like I said, since I have no cable, I only get WWE updates from Best and Worst of Raw's, so my news is heavily skewed in that direction. The dude is really impressive in the ring, so getting a main-event push would definitely make sense.

                1. He won every match for the first four months he was there or so. He's in that weird spot now where he's big enough that he has to go up against the stars, but not big enough that they can start putting him over all of them.

I've been a fan since he was in Ring of Honor under his real name.

Here he is lifting The Great Khali, who's seven feet tall and around a million pounds.

                  1. I'd seen plenty of clips of his matches, but the first time I was watching live, this happened:

                    httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnsgodH2g2c

And I became a fan for life.

I wish I could watch more often. It seems like its pretty good these days, Cena excepted.

  13. Some fan question: "If you pitch to contact, what are the keys to being successful?"
    Strikeouts.

  14. If anyone is interested I am looking into getting drunk and making bad fantasy baseball trade offers tonight.

  15. BERT JUST PREDICTED 87 WINS FOR THE KANSAS CITY ROYALS. SOMEBODY TELL AMR!

  16. "I believe the rule book says that if you could have made the play with ordinary effort, it's an error. I think that one took more than ordinary effort, so it should be a hit."

Okay, so can you clearly define "ordinary effort" for me?

    1. I'm picturing the dude from the old cartoons who's walking down the street whistling and leaning backwards at about a 45 degree angle.

  17. Speaking of first career home runs, Revere is still looking for his first. Since 1993, he's third on longest homerless streak to start a career, with 253 games. Tyner, of course, leads with 350 games.

  18. Bert, just a tip here, if you talk about people disagreeing with you on air via twitter you are going to get WAAAAAAY more people disagreeing with you on twitter.

    1. You just missed a hell of a "get to know em" joke from Dick. I don't think he knew it was a joke though.

      1. This might be an unpopular opinion but listening to Dick and Bert and shaking my head is part of the enjoyment I derive from watching Twins games. Are they good at there jobs? Of course not but there are folks who are far worse, too. In a season like this when there is only so much to root for I enjoy hearing the familiar tones of their voices. I also enjoy making fun of them.

Maybe that makes me a jerk or maybe a masochist. But hey, I've been called worse.

          1. They irrationally dislike Kevin Slowey we rationally dislike Nick Punto. Tomato/tomatoe.

        1. I also enjoy the comfortable familiarity of Dicknbert. Plus they are no worse than most. Right now the KC guys are going on about how Morris could pitch to the score. Dicknbert may not be great, but they're our 'not great'.

        2. Something tells me that Carroll could have struck out on a ball that literally bounced off the plate.

This wasn't supposed to be here.

  19. Three home runs for the Twins? Of course I'm busy at work so I missed all of them. More please.

  20. Apparently six years and 803 games wasn't enough time to "get to know" Damon in KC.

  21. If SlipperySlope goes one more inning, does he get credit for a 'quality start'?

  22. Thought I'd see how Spansie and Bennie are doing very early on in the NL:

Denard hitting just .250 with a .300 SLG, but his OBP is .444.

Revere has 4 SB and no CS; slash line of .233/.281/.233 (7 singles, 4 stolen bases)

Trivia: both attended Catholic high schools.

  23. Is throwing in the low to mid 90s considered a power pitcher? If so, I miss steroids.

  24. Royals trying to repeat what happened in Texas apparently where lightning struck the stadium. No one was injured then, so obviously no problems will happen again!

  25. my ps3 twins feed is being super schizophrenic right now. it keeps randomly hopping back 4-5 innings before, or going to commercial break video while maintain audio, or some strange combination of all these.

    1. I cant watch it because the FSN+ setup between FSN and the cable company is a friggin joke.

  26. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino
    tonight's attendance: 11,697

wow. thats kind of depressing. but school night and sketchy weather conditions might depress the total for these early games.

  27. Apparently they moved up the start time of last night's game and didn't tell the Twins, allowing Kansas City to get several runs ahead before Minnesota realized the game had started. This seems unfair, and presumably a protest has been filed with the commissioner's office. Until Gardy hears back from Bud Selig, though, we'll just have to settle for 158-4!
