Minor Details: Games of 4/13

Fort Myers remains perfect.  A sweep for Cedar Rapids.  Sixth-inning blues for the Red Wings.

PAWTUCKET 7, ROCHESTER 1 IN PAWTUCKET (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting starChris Herrmann was 1-for-2 with a walk and scored once.  The Red Wings had only four hits, all singles.

Pitching starsShairon Martis struck out four in 3.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and four walks.  Tyler Robertson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Terry Doyle struck out five in five innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk.  Bryce Brentz was 2-for-4 with a double.  Ryan Lavarnway was 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in one.

Key inning:  The sixth.  With the score tied at one, Pawtucket's first five batters reached base on the way to a six-run inning.  David Ortiz, on a rehab assignment, delivered a two-run single and Drew Sutton drove in two with a double.

PAWTUCKET 7, ROCHESTER 1 IN PAWTUCKET (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting starChris Colabello hit a home run, his fourth.  The Red Wings had only one other hit.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Justin Henry was 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in one.  Mark Hamilton was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, driving in four.  Graham Godfrey struck out five in 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only a walk.

Key inning:  The sixth.  Leading 3-1, Pawtucket scored four times to put the game out of reach.  Hamilton's three-run double was the key hit of the inning.

PORTLAND 6, NEW BRITAIN 5 IN NEW BRITAIN (10 INNINGS)

Batting starsCurt Smith was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Antoan Richardson was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Nathan Hanson was 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching starAlex Meyer struck out six in five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Travis Shaw was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Shannon Wilkerson was 3-for-5 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Chris Martin pitched three shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk.

Key inning:  The eighth.  Leading 5-3, the Rock Cats committed two errors and Wilkerson delivered a two-out triple to tie the score.  Wilkerson would also score the winning run in the tenth.

FORT MYERS 8, CHARLOTTE 7 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting starsAngel Morales was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Kyle Knudson was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-5 and scored twice.

Pitching starCorey Williams pitched a perfect ninth, striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Alejandro Segovia was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, scoring twice and driving in three.  Jake Hager was 3-for-5 and scored once.  Kyeong Kang was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.

Key inning:  The eighth.  Leading 6-3, the Miracle scored twice when Lance Ray doubled, Knudson singled, and Morales doubled.  They needed the runs, because the Stone Crabs came back with four in the bottom of the eighth on a single, a double, another single, and a two-run homer by Segovia.  However, Charlotte did not get the tying run on base.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, CLINTON 3 IN CLINTON (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting starsNiko Goodrum was 2-for-3 with two doubles and scored once.  J. D. Williams was 0-for-0 with three walks, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching starsBrett Lee gave up two hits in a scoreless inning.  Chris Mazza gave up a walk in a scoreless inning.

Opposition stars:  Patrick Kivlehan was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.  Dario Pizzano was 2-for-3 and scored once.  Dominic Leone pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and four walks.

Key inning:  The sixth.  Trailing 4-3, Clinton put runners on first and third with one out.  The potential tying run was cut down at the plate on a grounder to third.  The next batter also grounded out to end the threat.

CEDAR RAPIDS 2, CLINTON 1 IN CLINTON (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting starsDalton Hicks was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.  Candido Pimentel was 1-for-2 with a walk and scored once.

Pitching starsMason Melotakis struck out seven in five innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk.  Steven Gruver struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition star:  Matthew Vedo pitched three shutout innings, allowing one hit.

Key inning:  The first.  Hicks drove in two with a bases-loaded double to give the Kernels the early lead.  Jabari Henry led off the bottom of the first with a home run.  That was the end of the scoring.  Clinton threatened in the seventh, put runners on first and third with one out, but Gruver struck out the next two batters to preserve the victory.
