Game 39: Red Sox @ Twins

Well, they're back in last place again (then again, in the rough and tumble AL Central, that's not as bad a thing as it might otherwise appear).

After golf on Thursday, a group of people were sitting around talking about baseball, when the subject of Joe Mauer came up. I was expecting the worst, but the near universal consensus was that we're watching a Hall of Famer do Hall of Fame-y things. The couple dissenters were looked upon with a sort of cocked eyebrow pity. I got the sense that maybe all isn't lost. There are people - even those who aren't so statistically inclined - who can see that Minnesota's in the midst of watching one of the very best to ever play his position.

Those that can't see that? Well, they can choke on their own tongues when Joe is inducted into the Hall of Fame as they lie and say they were with him every step of the way.

Diamond vs. Dempster today (I didn't realize Dempster has been around as long as he has). Hopefully, Diamond bounces back from his last start (5 2/3 innings, 6 runs on 3 home runs), while Dempster expands upon his (5 innings, 6 runs on 3 home runs).

  1. maybe this is an unaswerable question, but what is more frustrating: a team where the pitchers give up a ton of runs, but the offense can score or a team where the pitchers are stingy with the runs, but the offense is awful?

    1. You are always in the game with a great pitching staff. Not so sure with your other scenario. Plus, giveback runs kill.

      1. You'd think so, but I actually prefer the offense. With a big offense, you always feel like maybe you can come back. With a lousy offense, you get behind 3-1 and you feel like the game's over.

  2. Phil Miller ‏@MillerStrib
Twins have now allowed 43 1st-inning runs, more than any 2 other innings combined. Meanwhile, 1st is their 2nd-worst inning, just 18 runs.

  3. Sorry, guys. I got here to induce the double play. Shoulda tuned in 10 minutes earlier.

  4. since the GOSO is in effect, I won't wait for the third. Great White witbier from Lost Coast. It is much better than "average", no matter what the drain-pourers say. It is a refreshing, clean, delicious take on the style. Sessionable, if one were so inclined.

    1. Gawd i love the drain pourers. I wish i could get a boner from being an ass.

Anywho, I'm late, but I've been drinking some hopalicious from the Ale Asylum and my summit hop IPA and my black IPA.

    1. the 3 run first made me decide to finally see Iron Man 3 tonight.
upside: 5 dollar ticket at the local theater.
downside: its an old theater, so no stadium seating and the audio system is crap

      1. audio system is crap means that your ears won't bleed from over-amped sound??

        *looks for silver lining*

        1. no...I dont know how to explain it. Its like it so bad they are to overcompensate for it and its louder than you think..or something. It was built in the 1930s and I think its still the same equipment :p

dont get me wrong, I love that my small town has a theater that shows new movies (only 3 times a week: Fri, Sat, Sun) at a good price (10 dollar bill will get you a ticket, soda, popcorn), but I like watching the big blockbuster movies in the Mankato theaters. The local theater is good for movies like Moneyball.

  5. Stu compares Twins to beers

Joe Mauer is Clausthaler (Binding Brauerei). Non-alcoholic, automatically disappointing to some people, German, easily the best of its kind.
Justin Morneau is Moosehead (Moosehead Brewery). Canadian, polite, used to be great when you were younger, still perfectly okay but you can't help but wonder if you can trade it for something a little better.

    1. I might have gone with New Belgium Porch Swing Single for Mauer. But I guess that one is retired.

  6. wait, so Mastro got hurt in Spring Training, and just now they figure it out he has a bone chip in his ankle? wow

  7. all right, Im heading out.
the way the pace of this game is going, it'll probably be the 8th inning when I get back

    1. you know what, it was close. Caught the radio recap of the game on the way home.

  8. It's a bad sign when I turn on the game and it's only the 5th inning and slipperyslope is already in the game.

      1. We're hoping to go Wednesday night, it's Manager Mike Jirschle wobblehead night. The Jirschle's are from Clintonville, WI, where Sheryl's grandparents lived. I've even driven past the Jirshcle family home.

  9. Hmmm...this seems to be turning into a game again.

What do you mean it's only the 5th inning?!

  10. So no one at Low Brow. Too bad I've been drinking since 6:00. Hope I don't get a DWB on the way home.

      1. No probs. Back safe in my home. It was a very nice buzzy ride home. I trust my bike much more than a car.

  11. A couple of grand slams and we'd have won the game. Given the number of times the Twins loaded the bases, that's not as goofy a statement as it might sound. Anyway, I guess we'll just have to settle for 141-21!
