Minor Details: Games of 5/23

Brian Dinkelman reminds everyone that he's still around.  A very good outing by Logan Darnell.  D. J. Baxendale has nothing to learn in Fort Myers.

ROCHESTER 4, CHARLOTTE 3 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Brian Dinkelman (remember him?) was 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored once.  Doug Bernier was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Aaron Thompson struck out three in three perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Blake Tekotte was 2-for-5 with two doubles.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Red Wings trailed 2-1.  Dinkelman led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by Danny Lehmann to tie the score.  Antoan Richardson delivered an RBI triple to put Rochester in front and scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a two-run lead.

NEW BRITAIN 1, BINGHAMTON 0 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz was 1-for-3 with a home run, his sixth.  James Beresford was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Logan Darnell struck out nine in eight innings, giving up six hits and a walk.  Michael Tonkin gave up no runs and no hits in a scoreless inning.

Opposition stars:  Mark Cohoon pitched all eight innings, allowing six hits and a walk and striking out seven.  Richard Lucas was 2-for-4 with a double.

Key inning:  The fifth.  In a scoreless tie, Ortiz led off the inning with a home run.  The Mets only got one runner past first base after the fourth inning.

FORT MYERS 6, LAKELAND 1 IN LAKELAND

Batting stars:  Kyle Knudson was 3-for-4 with a double.  Aderlin Mejia was 3-for-5 and scored three times.  Angel Morales was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fourth, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale pitched seven innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and two walks.  Nelvin Fuentes pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.  Corey Williams gave up a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  None.

Key inning:  There wasn't one, really, but we'll go with the third.  In a scoreless tie, Mejia hit a one-out single and scored on a double by Miguel Sano.  The Miracle scored single runs in each of innings three through six and added two in the ninth.  Lakeland's lone tally came in the sixth.

BELOIT 5, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Byron Buxton was 2-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Candido Pimentel was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  J. D. Williams was 2-for-4 and scored once.

Pitching stars:  Alex Muren pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and two walks.  Josh Burris and David Hurlbut each gave up a hit in a scoreless inning, with each striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Brett Vertigan was 3-for-3 with two walks and double, scoring once.  Renato Nunez was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Stuart Pudenz struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks.

Key inning:  The third.  Beloit had just scored in the second to take a 4-3 lead.  Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Kernels with none out.  J. D. Williams hit a short fly out, Michael Quesada was caught looking, and Jeremias Pineda flied out to end the threat.  The Kernels were never again able to get the tying run into scoring position.
