Game 73: Twins (34-38) vs. Marlins (25-50. oof, it sucks to be a Marlins fan these days.)

Correia (6-4, 3.87 ERA) vs. Fernandez (4-4, 3.05 ERA)

For the second time this year, the Twins get to play the Marlins in a two game set. Somehow, they lost one of those games last time (and looking it up its because Pelfrey was pitching during that particularly fun time of the year), so I should probably refrain from too much confidence. That said, I'm on a little Tuesday win-streak on days when I actually remember to do my game log, and I full expect to continue that here tonight.

The Marlins are the lowest scoring team in the league, and its not even close. I'm not convinced they'll score 500 runs this year.  Somehow, though, they actually aren't last in the league in run scoring differential because Houston still has a team in which a move to the AL has done no good. That's a good thing for Correia, who, not being a mind reader so I can only assume, will be looking to continue his surprisingly/un-surprisingly year of decent pitching while we spend the rest of the week talking about Kyle Gibson.

For this week's travels, I'll be in Charlotte, NC. Or, I wanted to be in Charlotte, but was forced by the person I am traveling with to stay in Shelby, NC, about an hour from Charlotte and likely containing less beer. It'll be interesting to see if the Bobcats to Hornets changover will be starting this week, or if the city has to wait until its official.

  1. Just two games in Florida? Dang, I was hoping to be one game under 0.500 going into the KC series. Still, with 4 games at home versus the Royals, 4-2 5-1* over the next six to get back to .500 is not entirely unreasonable.

    *I can't math. Corrected.

  2. so the Twins hit and run with Clete on the basepaths and he doesnt advance to third. You know, I dont think old Trader Clete is a very adept baserunner.

    1. I mean, the ball was hit to noodle armed Juan Pierre. How are you not at third?

  3. Waaaait a minute- Dozier is batting second? Gardy just can't help himself, can he?

  4. check out the scouting report for Kent Hrbek

    Scouting report year: 1978

Scout comments: "Saw him play one game and showed a slow bat. Couldn't pitch, but showed fair ability around 1st base. A real plow jockey as a runner. Must have some power, but didn't show it. Wants good money to sign ($20,000 and up). Don't like him for money. (Fringe prospect.)"

(emphasis mine) I think I need to add 'plow jockey' into casual conversations.

      1. Now my memories of Hrbek are from the World Series DVDs and my child brain, but I don't remember him having a particularly quick bat. Not Delmon slow, but I don't remember him whipping it through like Morneau. But he had fantastic bat control and a good eye at the plate. He never struck out more than 87 times in a season.

        1. I don't remember Hrbek playing at all- my folks never watched baseball, so I didn't start paying attention to the Twins until college. Was he more of an opposite field hitter?

I guess I ask that 'cause you could say Mauer has a slow bat, since it's almost always trailing his hands through his swing.

          1. I don't think Mauer's bat is slow. He just waits so long to swing.

I believe Hrbek pulled most of his homers but I don't think he required a shift.

            1. I don't think Mauer's bat is slow, either. I just think it could look that way, though probably not to a professional scout. Just wondering if it was something similar with Hrbek's swing that made it seem slower than it must have been.

He did pretty well to the opposite field, so I doubt teams played the shift against him. That, plus the shift wasn't as common back then.

    1. One time we had a kid in baseball tell our massive firstbaseman to "pick up the plow" while trying to score from 1st. We all looked at him like he was an idiot. "What?" "Raz, it's either 'pick up the pace' or 'unhook the plow'. If you pick up a plow, you still have to carry the weight." "OH, I suppose so."

  5. I love that Dick is stunned by the Twins lack of available bench moves when they have THIRTEEN BERTIN' PITCHERS ON THE ROSTER.

  6. Did the Twins all rub their gloves with butter or something? Three errors? Sheesh.

  7. so Correia had a bit of hiccup and then gets taken out because he is batting
I am not a fan of the NL

        1. Well, Millard school district. Millard the city was annexed by Omerha back in '71. Although most Millard residents still refuse to believe this.

          1. Sarpy County!!! With the coffee pot at the exit! I do agree that there's no difference. Especially since Omerha now extends way out to 204th street to my cousin's new house.

  8. Gosh, that Marlins outfield display is hideous even on GameDay. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it's "colorful".

  9. If I was at the Marlins stadium, I would track down whoever was whistling like that (which shouldn't be too hard given the attendance) and tell him to cram it.

  10. Some lame excuse goes here, followed by a hopelessly optimistic statement. We'll just have to settle for 123-39!
