Friday Music Day: July 26, 2013

In my "Best of 2012" column, I mentioned one album and one track that I though maybe should be there, but of which I had just learned. Well, upon 7 months reflection, and finally getting it on CD, Aaron Dilloway's Modern Jester is my 2012 album of the year. I've been listening a lot on headphones and computer speakers at the office, but listening to it loud was something else. I think he's done something with the sound waves and cancellation like Ryoji Ikeda where turning your head makes it sound different, that just doesn't register on headphones. This album is the kind of thing that's gonna ruin my life listening to tons of absolute crap that sounds similar but isn't actually very good (it already has and now I've got to re-try them all loudly). The genre tags at the bandcamp site are pretty descriptive: "crude drone electronic experimental junk modern classical musique concrete noise sound art synthesizer tape music Ohio." Try "Eight Cut Scars" and "Look Over Your Shoulder":

Dilloway's label, Hanson Records, has a new album "Sounds Of The Indian Snake Charmer Vol. Two" that sounds pretty impressive over some brief listens:

So, what're you listening to today?

Got Marcel Fengler - Fokus this week. His previous stuff has always been pretty abrasive techno, but he softened the edges for his first full length album. I liked Mayria in particular.

Caleb Burhans has a stream of his new album up on Soundcloud, although I think it's only available until Monday. The album comes out July 30, you can bet I'll be getting that one.

Been working my way through the post-rock/post-metal albums listed in this article. So far, I think Those Amongst Us Are Wolves is my favorite (and not just for the obvious CdL tie-in with the band name), although I have high hopes for Caves of Glass, just haven't got around to it yet.

Speaking of post-rock, 17 Pygmies recently came out with Isabel, which is the first of a trilogy, but that trilogy is the second trilogy in a trilogy of trilogies that will end up being a "100-song suite". I think that's the most post-rock thing I've ever heard. The third album from the first trilogy Even Celestina Gets the Blues (A Tale of Love and Quantum Physics) is available on Soundcloud if you're interested.

    1. If you dig The Holocene, definitely give one or two of those Dilloway tracks a spin.

Hmm, can't get 22 tracks to work at work.
17 Pygmies: I dig track 5 so far, around the 24:00 mark. Reminds me of instrumental Primal Scream, in the good way. Not really enjoying the tracks with vocals.
Post-metal isn't really my bag, but I might check those streams out later this afternoon.
I'll get to the Burhans next.

    5. To fit the theme, replace this with "Bachelorette (Alec Empire 'Hypermodern Jazz' Remix)"
    8. To fit the theme, replace this with "Hell Is Round the Corner"
    9. To fit the theme, skip this.
    B. ...That Subliminal Kid. Really dig DJ Spooky's bassline on this remix. I think this is one of the best things DJ Spooky has done. This bonus was chosen as the first one after the first ten to fit the theme. Number 17. (I can't remember when I bought Xenakis's Kraanerg, or one of those tracks would have been here.)

  4. I'm in week 1 of an iTunes-free existence. I downloaded the Winamp App for my phone because Google Play doesn't seem to have a shuffle function, which is lame. (at least, I couldn't find it, which means for me it doesn't exist.) I did have to download an equalizer, which was annoying but not that big of a deal. I copy and pasted all of my music onto the SD card without having to spend 20 minutes trying to remember how to do it. Wonderful.

    1. This is the song at the end of this episode of Futurama. If you're a fan, you probably understand why I point that out.
    4. Every wedding of my siblings has featured the same DJ (he's a family friend, but also really really good), and he always plays this song last. Great sentimental value for me.
    7. Speaking of weddings (and I think I've mentioned this before), one of my greatest hopes for the rest of my life is that my daughter will get married and choose this song for the father-daughter dance.
    8. That's a nice follow up to #7.
    9. That's a nice follow up to #8.

  6. I stumbled upon this video during my mid-week YouTube through-the-rabbit-hole -- some of my favorite PT songs performed quite well, plus a little bit of interview.

    1. I know this sounds dickish, but I'm trying to figure out which list I hate more: yours or Philo's. Since at least you have Zeppelin, I guess I have to go with Philo's. Your #7 through B gave it a nice race to the bottom however.

  8. I finally got around to digesting The Replacements Hootenanny! album, and I gotta say I really like it. 'Take Me Down to the Hospital' really stands out, since Ive played it 20 times in about 2 weeks. I love the surfing music inspired (more like snowboarding!) instrumental 'Buck Hill'. 'Lovelines' is interesting and groovy.
So yeah, it probably ranks #3 on my Replacements list. Their Hootenanny-Let It Be-Tim run is pretty impressive.

  9. 1. "Buried Alive [feat. Dt. Ogtagon]" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Mosquito
    2. "Come as You Are" - Nirvana - MTV Unplugged New York

    11. Master Mechanic - Johnny Winter

I'm thinking that last one could be the official theme song for Truck Time with Twayn.
