Minor Details: Games of 8/1

A home run barrage in New Britain.  David Hurlbut and Niko Goodrum come through for Cedar Rapids.  A last-inning win for the GCL Twins.

LEHIGH VALLEY 3, ROCHESTER 2 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars:  Jermaine Mitchell was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Chris Parmelee was 1-for-2 with two walks.  Eric Farris was 1-for-2 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Edgar Ibarra pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up no runs and no hits.

Opposition stars:  Cody Overbeck was 3-for-3.  Freddy Galvis was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.  Pete Orr was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.

Key inning:  The sixth.  The score was tied at one.  In the top of the inning, the Red Wings opened with a walk, a single, and a walk to load the bases with none out.  A force out put Rochester in the lead, but a double play ended the inning.  In the bottom half, with two out and none on, Cameron Rupp singled, Orr doubled, and Leandro Castro hit a two-run double to give the IronPigs the lead.

Prospect watch:  Eduardo Escobar was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Josmil Pinto, in his AAA debut, was 0-for-4.

NEW BRITAIN 9, AKRON 5 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz was 3-for-4 with a home run (his eleventh), scoring twice and driving in three.  Evan Bigley was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a home run (his first), scoring three times.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his thirteenth and fourteenth) and five RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Jose Gonzalez pitched 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.  Dakota Watts pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and no walks.

Opposition star:  Carlos Moncrief was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.

Key inning:  The eight.  The Aeros scored four in the seventh to cut a 6-1 lead to 6-5.  In the eighth, Dan Rohlfing led off with a walk and Ortiz and Bigley hit back-to-back homers to make the score 9-5.

Prospect watch:  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4.  Miguel Sano was 0-for-2 with two hit-by-pitches and scored once.

DAYTONA AT FORT MYERS

Rained out.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, BURLINGTON 2 IN BURLINGTON

Batting star:  Travis Harrison was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.

Pitching stars:  David Hurlbut, normally a reliever, started and went 3.2 innings, striking out five while giving up one run on four hits and no walks.  Madison Boer struck out four in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and one walk.  Brian Gilbert struck out two in two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Alex Blackford struck out six in two shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit and no walks.  Zach Wright was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Sherman Johnson was 2-for-5 and scored once.

Key inning:  The fourth.  The Kernels trailed 1-0.  Niko Goodrum led off the inning with an inside-the-park homer to tie the score.  With two out, a pair of walks and an RBI single by Joel Licon put Cedar Rapids ahead.  The Kernels got an insurance run on an error.

Prospect watch:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  Max Kepler was 0-for-3 with a walk and scored once.

BLUEFIELD 4, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Zach Granite was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Tanner Vavra was 1-for-2 and was hit by a pitch.  Ryan Walker was 0-for-1 with two walks and scored once.

Pitching star:  Andrew Ferreira struck out five in two shutout innings, giving up no hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Justin D'Allesandro struck out six in two shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks.  Nico Taylor was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Mitch Nay was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored once.

Key inning:  The seventh.  Leading 3-2, the Blue Jays got an insurance run when Tom Locastro hit a one-out triple and scored on a single by Taylor.

Prospect watch:  Romy Jimenez was 0-for-4.

GCL TWINS 3, GCL RAYS 2 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Zach Larson was 2-for-4 and scored once.

Pitching stars:  Chih-Wei Hu struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  Tyler Stirewalt struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Kean Wong was 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice.  Christopher Crisostomo struck out six in five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.

Key inning:  The ninth.  The score was tied at two.  With one out, Joel Polanco reached base on a strikeout.  Pinch-runner Will Hurt stole second and scored on a double by Kanzler to win the game.

Prospect watch:  Darin Mastroianni, on a rehab assignment, was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Alex Swim was 0-for-2 with a walk and scored once.  Adonis Pacheco was 0-for-4.

DSL TWINS 5, DSL PADRES 1 AT PADRES

Batting stars:  Dubal Baez was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored twice.  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-2 with a walk and a triple, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Jose Ramirez started and pitched four innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Javier Vargas pitched four shutout innings, giving up five hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Moises Lendor was 3-for-3 with a walk.  Jonas Lantigua was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.  Deninson Martinez struck out three in three shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks.

Key inning:  The first.  An error, a Guzman triple, and a wild pitch plated two runs before anyone was retired.  With one out, a pair of walks, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly brought home a third run.

Prospect watch:  Frank Encarnacion was 0-for-5.

    1. That thought crossed my mind, too, but of course it's entirely possible that there was nothing intentional about them at all.
