2013 Game 142: Angels at Twins

So the Red Wings fall in the playoffs and we get to see The Replacements tonight as the Twins call up seven players from Rochester for a September cup of coffee. I'd suggest getting that coffee to go, boys. Something about the barely replacement-level quality of this team and these call-ups is leaving me feeling so...unsatisfied.

Pedro Hernandez (3-1, 5.19 ERA) vs. Jered Weaver (9-8, 3.33 ERA) in a makeup game from April. Aside from the chance of getting shut out, I don't much like our chances tonight. Play ball (anyway)!

  1. LENIII:

Center fielder Aaron Hicks was not among the call-ups, and its clear that the Twins hope he gets the message. He batted .222 at Rochester and battled injuries after being sent down.

And just what would that message be, LENIII? That the Twins unnecessarily rushed him to the big leagues and he struggled, resulting in lost confidence, further resulting in a demotion to his first ever taste at AAA, where he also struggled in limited playing time because of injuries?

I hope he gets that message!

  2. Just got letter from FIL with multiple newspaper clippings from Minny.

One-such is 'Alligator surprises anglers' in Scandia! Zoinks, Scoob!

I remember driving to a golf course in Chisago City from Scandia a while back, and the wife and I saw an Emu running in the weeds along the road about the same speed as our car. Emu's are one thing but Alligators?

    1. So, I'd never seen a gator up close and personal until this year. I had to stop on the side of the highway for some reason, and out of the corner of my eye I noticed some rustling. I turned to look and saw a 4 foot long gator walk out of the brush. I got in my car and proceeded on down the line.

Since then, I've seen several road killed gators, some of which are pretty impressively large. I'm pretty sure the Versa wouldn't fare very well against a 12 footer.

  3. Don't you have to try to score from first on a double with two outs? I mean, I'm sure Pinto is not the fastest guy, but damn, make the defense make a good play to get the out.

    1. that was some nifty sliding. i don't think he was ever touched. i also wouldn't be surprised if the ump made the right call for the wrong reason.

  4. Hell of a top of the 9th in Cleveland. Kottaras pinch-hit at-bat with 2 down and runners on 2nd & 3rd. Quickly gets behind 0-2 and then works the count full through 10 pitches including 4 foul balls. Earns a walk to load 'em up for Gordon who promptly pops out to center.

    1. HBT guy eviscerates Ned Yost managing of that inning

Setting the scene: Indians up 4-3 on the Royals in the top of the ninth. Cleveland closer Chris Perez gives up a single to Salvador Perez and a walk to Mike Moustakas to begin the inning, setting things up very nicely.

Very nicely indeed, for Ned Yost to trample all over what was left of the Royals’ postseason hopes.

Dude just caught his FOURTH foul ball of the night and we're still in the 7th. Legends Club, sec F, row 6

    1. Please?
Twins win tonight, they can just keep winning and force another game 163 with Detroit.
And the Twins have played well against the Tigers in Games 163.

          1. I'm guessing he gets shopped around but we see him in Ft. Myers. I don't see them rolling with only Herrmann and Pinto knowing Mauer missed time this fall with a concussion.

      1. fun with SSS:

Mike Berardino - "That makes three doubles on the night for Pinto. Now has 5 in 23 career at-bats. Came in slugging .789"

    1. Mike Scioscia should be fired.
Losing with Jared Weaver against the Rochester Red Wings who had lost ten straight games and who only won two home games in the entire past month.
      Mike Scioscia should be fired.

  7. "Duensing, get in here," barked Ron Gardenhire. "Sit down. What's with all these meetings you pitchers have been having?"

"Why, whatever do you mean, Mr. Gardenhire?" asked Brian Duensing.

"Cut it out. I know what's going on. You pitchers are getting together all the time. What's the deal?"

"We're just trying to help the team, skip, honest," said Duensing. "You see, I think..."

    "Ouch!" said Ron Gardenhire.

    "What's wrong?"

"That word. Think. It hurts. I don't like it when pitchers think. You remember that Breslow character?" Gardenhire continued. "Always thinking. That's why we had to get rid of him. What happened to him could happen to you, you know."

"You mean I could go to a playoff team?"

"Nobody likes a smart-aleck, Duensing," Gardy said. "Here's the deal. You just go out there and pitch. I'll do the thinking. I'm better at it than you are. What did you say?"

"Just clearing my throat, Skip," said Duensing.

"Oh. Anyway, tell the other pitchers, too. Pitchers pitch, batters bat, and managers think. Remember that, and we'll be fine."

And they did. And we're still on track for 82-80!

      1. The Parable of the Pitcher and the Manager.

Pitchers pitch, batters bat, and managers think. Remember that, and we’ll be fine.
