October 3, 2013: Another One?

I don't feel like it should be time for another birthday yet, but here I am. This was the year that I felt so old that I finally listened to some of the regulars at the other site and went hard after getting a game published. Here's to 36 being an important age.

    1. Needs a Death Star and Death Star: Pig in the City arc on the margins like charts of the planets have the sun.

              1. ah.

I was amused to see non-ship things in there, including, confusingly, Phobos. Is it sekretly an alien artifact and the gubmint is hiding the evidence in Area 51?

  1. Got a speeding ticket yesterday, 62 in a 40. Never had a speeding ticket before and I almost never speed, especially on side streets. I'm so embarrassed, as I normally pride myself on defensive driving (and because this will hurt us financially). It was a nasty combination of being late, taking wrong turns, running into detours and traffic, and having a a woman in a minivan nearly cause me to crash 10 seconds before because she slammed on her breaks in the middle of the road for no reason. I let my emotions get to me, I sped past her, and right as a conveniently located officer was parked right by the driveway of my destination.

    1. You know, if its a really high fine, you could try to get it written down. I'm not giving you legal advice, I'm just saying that if you have a court date and have the means to get there, you might be able to get the prosecutor to write it down. If not, you just pay it then.

Anyone have any experience here? I talked to a prosecutor once on a different matter and got some satisfaction and I think other folks got tickets written down.

      1. I got a ticket written down once with just a phone call, I didn't even need to appear.

        Start rant:

      2. I'm debating what I want to do. I admitted going 55, but in reality I have no idea and it was probably higher. I have a hard time believing that he had a gun on me since he wasnt parked.

I will say my seatbelt helped when I slammed on my brakes.

        1. With a speed difference that large, it could have ramifications on both the fine and your insurance premiums. If you have a clean driving record, I'd say go to the court date and see if you can get it reduced. You might at least be able to get it down to 55 in a 40. Worst case, you still have the same ticket.

      3. I think that, as often happens when dealing with the government, it depends a lot on who your file gets assigned to. If you're lucky, you get someone who's very reasonable. If you're unlucky you get someone who's...not. And I'd better stop there before I get any farther into the Forbidden Zone.

        1. And I'd better stop there before I get any farther into the Forbidden Zone.

          Or the Kafka Zone.

      4. My experience (and again, I'm also not giving legal advice)...

  2. there seems to be lots of chatter on twitter about a 5 year contract extension for Pominville.

      1. I'm definitely in favor, even without knowing the details of the deal. You had to know hope they wouldn't give up all those assets for a 16-month rental of the guy. Also goes a long way to improving the locker room/team culture - everything I've read about him indicates a hard working, no-excuse kind of guy (a bit like Parise, reputation wise). Hopefully that attitude and work ethic rubs off on all the youth they'll have to lean on this year.

        1. Agreed with all this. It was a little richer than I was hoping, but everything is more expensive than I think it should be.

Did you see the power play groups? Number 2 is Nino, Coyle, Granlund, Spurgeon and either Dumba or Brodin. Average age: barely legal to drink.

          1. I did. Heard on the radio this morning that Yeo felt that last year's baptism by fire; shortened season, lots of games, few practices, etc., was beneficial for Coyle, Brodin and to some extent Granlund. Basically, they were able to shake any first-year jitters and learn they can play in this league, then come back this year knowing what to expect and be able to focus on execution and chemistry.
I certainly hope that's the case...especially for Granlund and Nino.

            1. Yea, I question the wisdom of sticking Granlund on the fourth line with Konopka and Mitchell. Selfishly, I wanted Dowell to make the team, what with all that crazy family stuff from Russo and ESPN.

With regard to Heatley, Yeo said that skill players need to play with skill players, so the fourth line makes no sense to me. At least we will get a glimpse tonight!

                1. I don't think so. Cooke and Brodziak have been together since the beginning of camp on the third line. I hope they are in great shape too, because they are going to get a ton of minutes killing penalties and taking two-thirds of the d-zone draws. Prediction! Those two will lead the team in time on ice tonight. We can check the new website in the morning!

                1. No. You're right and I can't find my imagined line anywhere on Russo. My guess is something silly on Hockey Wilderness burned a hole in my brain.

    1. Re: Walking Point, I want to comment but have had trouble posting as a guest and also had trouble setting up a Sqauarespace account. Suggestions?

Edit: Nevermind - used my _oogle log-in.

    2. I figured it could use some updating. If anyone else has a blog they want listed, let me know. That goes for citizen blogs or other related sites that the citizens find indispensable.

  3. Gunman at the U.S. Capitol today. One Capitol police officer injured.

Federal officials said that the incident had actually begun near the White House, when a car struck a security bollard at 15th and Pennsylvania Avenue NE. A pursuit started and the driver was chased toward Capitol Hill.

    1. From what I'm hearing the only shots that were fired were from the police officers. I have a bad feeling about this.

      1. 3:06 PM: Police tell ABC7's Jennifer Donelan that the incident reportedly started when an unidentified woman tried to drive through a barricade at the White House. She had a baby in the back seat of her vehicle. The woman fled the area and ended up at the Capitol, where she tried to drive through another barricade.

Authorities opened fire on the vehicle, killing the woman, authorities say.

  4. neighbor is under the overhang at New Busch straight down the right field foul line, more or less. nice day for a game; slight breeze

Hey Rows, did you guys have bad storms overnight? Many of the UP network servers were knocked out, and I couldn't even log into my VM until after lunch today #losttime

    1. Thunder kept waking the dogs up and making them bark, so yeah, we must have had some pretty good storms.

  5. Karl's in my corner tonight.

Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns fans gotta stick together. Pain goes down smoother with a kindred pal, you guys.— Karl Welzein (@DadBoner) October 3, 2013

  6. so, abbreviations for academic journals. Huh.

    Accid Anal Prev.

    that's the Pubmed abbreviation for

    Accident Analysis & Prevention
Affiliated with the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine

Accident Analysis & Prevention provides wide coverage of the general areas relating to accidental injury and damage, including the pre-injury and immediate post-injury phases.

    1. Sounds like the kind of journal that would be useful for a practitioner combining the skills of analyst and therapist.

  7. It sure looked like Cooke kicked that to me. Either way, 1-0 Wild after 5 minutes. On pace for a record breaking goal differential this year (+984 at this pace).

  8. Wow that L.A. goalie is good. Wild lose 2-3 in Shoot Out. But Braves getting chopped and there is a surprisingly entertaining football game with the Browns v. Bills. As Meartloaf said, two out of three aint bad.
