October 10, 2013: Anniversary

It's the anniversary of one of my worst breakups - a night where I reacted by making some bad decisions and eventually vomiting blood in front of a lot of people. Let's never be 17 again, guys.

  1. I have absolutely zero desire to be seventeen again. In fact, I have zero desire to be any younger at all than I am.

            1. Yeah, I'm a little shocked that Beau would miss such a thing. He's the only person I know that's more obsessed with the trilogy than I am.

        1. Oh, I think so. But even if 17 year old me didn't listen, I'd still like to tell him some things.

  2. Well... at least another week of having to listen to my Cardinal fan friends brag about another playoff run. Some were gracious, saying how Pittsburgh put on a great series, but others were pretty mean, saying things like "Shitsberg" and commenting on how all the Pirate fan gear looked new and such. It is because of these people that I want the Cardinals to lay an egg in this postseason and never show up again for 20 years. But alas, it probably won't happen since they have great pitching, mostly by rookies. Boy, it's be nice if the Twins would think that way.

    1. Never heard any bad things here. I've never drank the "greatest fans" kool aid, but a lot of them do seem to be more knowledgeable than a few other sporting teams' fans that I know.

  3. Where can a fella see the standings on the post-season prediction contest? Is there a link somewhere?

    1. People are doing much better than last year. The winning score was 15 points last year and two people (suspiciously the organizer as well....) have reached that mark with three series to go. Even better: no one with zero points this year.

      1. I'm the defending champ?! Somehow I had forgotten. That should be worth about 250 Cutthroat Junction points, right?

  4. Gleeman tweeted last night that "Justin Morneau ended up hitting .267 with zero homers, three RBIs, and a .316 slugging percentage in 31 games for the Pirates."

I love the guy but clearly there's nothing left in the tank. I hope he hangs up the spikes rather than put up similar numbers for a team like the Blue Jays or Seattle.

    1. That August run he had will undoubtedly convince an AL team to sign him to at least a minor league deal with a ST invite. I don't know if he'd accept that. And I wouldn't mind the Twins signing him to that deal if the Twins aren't going to have Mauer play first base full time. He was worth almost 2 rWAR to the Twins, so if the Twins signed him for 1 year at $4M or less would be a decent risk. If he has a hot first couple months, they could flip him for some pitching.

    2. SSS. He also had a .370 OBP. For the year, he hit .259/.323/.411, which was a bit above average. He's clearly at the end of his career, but I don't think he will have a problem getting a few offers from teams.

    3. also as a Pirate he had 13 walks, 12 strikeouts.

I wonder if Morneau would be willing to play a role like what Jason Giambi did for the Indians. "Veteran leader", "like a second manager", part time player.

      1. Agree that it's SSS but even his season slash lines are not numbers that made most people dig Morneau as a player. I don't doubt that he'd get an offer, I said I hope he wouldn't play out the string and go out with a whimper.

  5. almost a billion dollar is not enough for the Vikings

I wasnt totally against the stadium, but I think whole thing has been mismanaged on the Vikings end. The funding thing is an obvious misstep, BUT instead of building a nice, functional stadium like Detroit has (at less cost. Wiki tells me it costs 550B in 2013 dollars), they went with the weird all glass looking more expensive thing.

    1. I agree with everything that DW states but what is truly ridiculous is that after PSLs, Stadium Naming Rights, NFL "Loan," etc., the Wilfs will probably end up putting much less than $50M of their own $$$ into the stadium. Instead of cutting some amenities, why not pony up more? Even the Pohlad's recognized that.

      1. Skol.

One wonders why no one in Minnesota stepped up to buy the Vikings from Red. Red got his money out of the Vikings, but it was chump change compared to what the Wilfs are gonna get.

        1. I don't think it can be stated enough how incredible it is that the Wilfs make Red look like a good, honest man and owner.

          1. I'm not ready to go there. I think Red was the epitome of scumbag owners, he just wasn't as patient as the Wilfs are (in waiting for the stadium).

They do, however, make the Pohlads look good.

    2. I think they should take this opportunity to scuttle the whole boondoggle.
/To be fair, I've been saying that about every opportunity.
      //Such as Mondays.

    3. The Vikings also have agreed to advance $13.1 million to restore some features on their wish list that had been targeted for cuts, including installation of a Wi-Fi system. The team would recoup the investment at the end of construction if contingency funds remain.

Wi-Fi is a must have. We need live tweeting of every 4th quarter collapse (although I've proved that you can actually do that from your own living room).

    4. The Metrodome is the epitome of what of a publicly-funded stadium should do. It did everything. Every sport. Every non-sport event. It has terrible acoustics. It was a terrible place to watch a baseball game. But it did it. And it was built for 15-16 percent of what the new stadium will cost.

This billion dollar thing it is being replaced with will do one thing well, 8-10 times a year.

      1. Not that I'm really in favor of boondoggle stadiums, but I feel like I should point out that a similar facility, CenturyLink Field in Seattle, seems relatively slammed with events--soccer (not even just the Sounders, Mexico hosted a friendly here, for example), big concerts, college football (Washington State likes to host games here to tap into their Seattle-based alumni), motocross, etc., in addition to the Seahawks. It might not have quite as many events as Safeco Field, but it's definitely more multi-purpose than a baseball park and these days it probably sees more people go through its gates than Safeco does over the course of a year.

        1. That turf is always an issue for soccer games though. I imagine Seattle would have hosted many more internationals if they didn't have to throw sod on top of it before every FIFA match.

          1. Meh, I think it's mainly turf-phobia. It can get a little dicey at the end of its life cycle, but for the most part it's a perfectly good surface to play on. CONCACAF has had no problems scheduling games on turf, it's just USSF that doesn't like to do it. In MLS, I'd put Seattle's pitch above Houston at least--Houston always seems to be a sand pit and have some damage from college (and/or high school?) football games. Good grass is better than good turf, but it's easier to guarantee good turf than it is to guarantee good grass.

    5. “We only have $975 million in the budget, and there’s only so many things you can get under that number,” said Vikings Vice President Lester Bagley.

Please, sir, may I have some more?

  6. I freelance from home, and my main client I work for is a company that transcribes conference calls for corporations around the world. I proofread these transcriptions. Normally, they are about an hour long and it takes 2, 2 1/2 hours to do. I got a record long one last night. The call was 3 hours and 20 minutes. Because of several speakers with very heavy accents, it was a pretty difficult call. I started at about 8:30 last night and didn't finish until almost 6 this morning. This isn't the first time I've worked through the night like that, but previously it was two or three transcriptions. Not just one. If anyone cares, the call was long because it was a company Investor Day. The company was Luxottica, so I learned all about eyewear (LensCrafters, Sunglasses Hut, Pearle Vision, Ray-Ban, Oakley, etc.). Btw, if you go into an Oakley store and purchase something, you can get a free motorcycle grip. This is what Oakley started out making before moving into sport eyewear.

  7. Alice Munro! Nobel Prize! Exciting news! (Too many exclamation points, I know, but I can't help it.)

    1. Funny, I'm in the middle of The Best American Short Stories for 2012, and her short story "Axis" is included in that collection. I was excited to see she had won and that I had actually heard of a Nobel Prize winner for once!

  8. I never knew this. St. Olaf and Carleton participated in something called 'The Liter Bowl'
Back in high school, there was a half a chapter in the American History book talking about the movement to metric system.

  9. Yesterday the funding period for my game ended on Kickstarter. I finished at 125% to target. Thanks to everyone that got involved or got the message out there. I had a very large, very surprising number of backers that neither the artist nor I knows. That was flattering.

    1. They're probably just all of DG's pseudonyms.

Edited to add: That reads a little harsh, and I just want to clarify that I'm not trying to belittle your achievement, but simply to tweak DG.

  10. Well, I think I'd mentioned that the wife and I were expected. Today's (and potentially tomorrow) the day, so I'd appreciate any thoughts and/or prayers as we go through the delivery.

      1. I assume he meant they are expected to stop sleeping for awhile.

(also, congrats and best of luck with the delivery, rpz.)

    1. Best of luck! It was amusing two days ago to follow my cousin on Facebook: (1) looks like we're going to induce on Friday, (2) no strike that, I think we'll induce tomorrow, (3) on our way to the hospital, (4) here's your new cousin! This all happened in the span of about 90 minutes on Facebook.

        1. If only twitter still allowed instragram in-site viewability.
(Completely unsure what the word is, but you used to be able to look as instagram photos in Twitter.)

    2. Do whatever your wife and the nurses tell you to do, don't complain about anything unless it's on your wife's behalf, and realize that there will be blood. Best of luck to you!

  11. WILD UPDATE:
Backstrom is not expected to miss an extended period of time with a strained knee though Harding will start in net tonight. Backs may be healthy enough to backup this evening - TBD.

    Roster moves:
Zucker & McMillan back down to IA
    Stephane Veilleux recalled

    Shuffled lineup:
Nino Niederreiter - Mikko Koivu - Zach Parise
Jason Ponminville - Mikael Granlund - Dany Heatley
Matt Cooke - Kyle Brodziak - Justin Fontaine
Stephane Veilleux - Zenon Konopka - Torrey Mitchell

    Ryan Suter - Jonas Brodin
    Keith Ballard - Jared Spurgeon
    Clayton Stoner - Matt Dumba

Yeo on Zucker, "He wasn't going to factor in on the third line and we weren't going to play him on the fourth." He said the other moves bring speed and balance to the fourth line and put Pominville in position to jump-start a sputtering second line.

    1. how long of a leash does Yeo have this year?
with all the money spent and whatnots, it cant be more than two weeks.

      1. Really? That seems a little quick on the trigger to me.

Despite the money spent I don't feel like this is a "win now" team. They've got a ton of young players that are going to take time to develop, and Yeo's experience and success in the minors with a lot of these same young players was a big part of why he was hired.

        1. right.
but in the NHL, it seems like patience is zero and coaches get fired/hired at an alarming high rate.
Im a little more patient, but how long does the Wild fanbase as a whole have before the pitchforks and torches start marching down to the X?

  12. BREAKING EX-TWINS NEWS: The Twitters tell me that Brian Bass is the new pitching coach at Stevenson University in Baltimore.

  13. I see that Jerry Kill is taking some time away from the Gophers. Hope he can get his health situation straightened out soon.
