Fall Festival: Games of 10/25

Byron Buxton celebrates his return to the lineup with a home run.  Zack Jones continues to struggle.  More Soler power for Mesa.

SALT RIVER 4, GLENDALE 2 IN GLENDALE

Twins:  Byron Buxton, making his first appearance in a week and a half, was 1-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4.  Max Kepler was 0-for-3.  A. J. Achter struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and one walk.  Zack Jones gave up four runs (two earned) on one hit and three walks in two-thirds of an inning.

Salt River:  Kenny Wilson (Toronto) was 2-for-5 with two doubles.  Drew Hutchinson (Toronto) struck out four in four innings, giving up one run on two hits and no walks.

Glendale:  Charlie Leesman (White Sox) pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks with one strikeout.

The game:  Buxton hit a home run in the first inning to put Glendale up 1-0.  It stayed that way until the sixth.  Three walks filled the bases with one out.  Jacob Wilson singled in one.  A sacrifice fly plated another, and two more scored on a throwing error.  Glendale got one in the seventh but never got the tying run on base.

MESA 7, PEORIA 5 IN PEORIA

Mesa:  Kris Bryant (Cubs) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple, scoring three times and driving in one.  Jorge Soler (Cubs) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a two-run homer.  Tyler Collins (Detroit) was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.

Peoria:  Patrick Kivlehan (Seattle) was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Cameron Perkins (Philadelphia) was 2-for-5 with a triple and scored once.

The game:  It was tied at two after five and tied at three after six.  Perkins tripled and scored in the seventh to put Peoria ahead 4-3.  In the top of the eighth, Soler hit a two-run homer to make it 5-4 Mesa.  Kivlehan homered in the bottom of the eighth to tie it at five.  In the ninth, Taylor Lindsey singled and scored on a Bryant triple to put Mesa back in front.  Bryant later scored on a fielder's choice to make the score 7-5.  Peoria put runners on first and second with two out in the bottom of the ninth.

SURPRISE 3, SCOTTSDALE 1 IN SCOTTSDALE

Surprise:  Joe Wendle (Cleveland) was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Tyler Naquin (Cleveland) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Tim Berry (Baltimore) pitched four shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.

Scottsdale:  Mason Williams (Yankees) was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Cory Vaughn (Mets) was 2-for-4.  Vidal Nuno (Yankees) pitched four shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

The game:  It was scoreless until the fifth.  An error was followed by a Wendle triple to put Surprise ahead 1-0.  Naquin singled in Wendle to make it 2-0.  An error, a walk, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly made it 3-0 in the top of the ninth.  Scottsdale got its lone run in the ninth and put the tying run on base with one out.
