Mexican Matchups: Games of 12/3

A big inning ends the see-saw in Guasave.  Navojoa plays Earl Weaver baseball.

NAVOJOA 4, MAZATLAN 1 IN NAVOJOA

Mazatlan:  Issmael Salas was 2-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Walter Ibarra (Cubs) was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Mauricio Lara pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Navojoa:  Luis Fonseca was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Carlos Orrantia was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, his fifth.  Hector Velazquez struck out five in 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk.

The game:  Navojoa took a 1-0 lead on an RBI ground out in the first and Orrantia hit a three-run homer in the fifth.  Mazatlan's lone run came on a Salas homer in the ninth.

OBREGON 12, GUASAVE 9 IN GUASAVE

Obregon:  Barbaro Canizares was 2-for-3 with two walks, a double, and a two-run homer (his sixth), scoring twice.  Alfredo Amezaga was 3-for-4 with two walks and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Linder Castro struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.

Guasave:  Mark Hamilton was 2-for-3 with two walks and a home run (his sixth), driving in three.  Jose Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a walk and a three-run homer (his seventh), scoring twice.  Leonardo Heras was 2-for-5 with a triple and three runs.

The game:  Each team scored twice in the first.  Guasave got two in the third to take a 4-2 lead.  A hit batsman, three two-out walks, and a two-run single by Amezaga put Obregon up 5-4 in the top of the fourth, but Rodriguez hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to give Guasave the lead at 7-5.  A sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 7-6.  In the sixth, Canizares hit a two-run homer and Carlos Valencia had a two-run double as part of a six-run inning that gave Obregon a 12-7 advantage.  Guasave got two in the ninth but did not bring the tying run up to bat.

CULIACAN 8, LOS MOCHIS 2 IN CULIACAN

Los Mochis:  Saul Soto was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run, his seventh.  Emmanuel Avila was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jake Fox was 1-for-4 with a home run, his seventh.

Culiacan:  Mario Valdez was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and three RBIs.  Jorge Cantu was 1-for-2 with two walks and a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Amauri Sanit pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Culiacan scored two in the first, one in the second, and four in the third to go up 7-0 and take control early.  Valdez hit a two-run homer in the third and Maxwell Leon had a two-run single in the same inning.

MEXICALI 10, HERMOSILLO 2 IN HERMOSILLO

Mexicali:  Cristhian Presichi was 3-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Oscar Robles was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Javier Solano pitched seven shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Hermosillo:  Jose Aguilar was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.  Carlos Gastelum was 2-for-4.

The game:  Mexicali got one in the second and two in the third.  Still leading 3-0 after four, they put it away with a five-run fifth.  They had three walks, three singles, a double, and two sacrifice flies in the inning.  The only Hermosillo runs came on the Aguilar two-run homer in the eighth.
