Running in the snow and ice

Went out this morning to get in my 16 miles per the training plan. 20F and some wind on icy roads by Scandia.  The Hyannis marathon is an out and back half followed by the same out and back half again. So I'm trying to do my long runs the same way to get conditioned to it.

It was cold this morning but I figured better to run on snow / ice than slush. That way the tennis shoes don't get wet etc.  and it was forecasted to warm up quickly today.

The first 8 mile loop I was freezing tho. I wore a headband to cover my ears but I just felt cold. So loop 2 I put on a stocking cap and added running pants. A mile out I was too hot. So some adjustments needed there...

I have run with yaktrax but I figured 16 miles on them would get old. It was a tough run today, but in the books.

  1. Congrats. That is a long run in those conditions. It is hard to find the right mix of clothing when going that far in the cold.

  2. I'm battling some sort of calf injury. I've found a muscle adhesion, though, right at the spot where it hurts, so I'm hoping I can massage it away. I hope that's all it is. I've got less than 7 weeks until my next half and I'm fat and out of shape from my trip home.
