Australian Audit: Games of 1/5

No good Twins news.  A big comeback for Brisbane.  Melbourne gets Tripped up.

BRISBANE 7, SYDNEY 3 IN BRISBANE

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 0-for-4.  Josh Guyer (Sydney) pitched 1.1 innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks.

Sydney:  Keon Broxton (Arizona) was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Zach Shepherd was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Vaughan Harris pitched six innings, giving up three unearned runs on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Brisbane:  David Sutherland was 1-for-4 with a home run (his sixth), scoring twice and driving in three.  Matthew Roxburgh was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Rhys Niit retired all eight men he faced, striking out two.

The game:  RBI singles by Shepherd and Broxton put Sydney ahead 2-0 in the first.  It stayed 2-0 until the sixth, when Sydney added one on a sacrifice fly.  In the bottom of the sixth, though, Brisbane came back to tie it up, with one run scoring on an error and two more coming in on Sutherland's two-run homer.  Brisbane then took the lead with four in the eighth, scoring one on an error, two more on RBI singles by Patrick Leonard (Tampa Bay) and Justin O'Conner (Tampa Bay), and one on a ground out.  The last eleven Sydney batters went out.

ADELAIDE 6, CANBERRA 5 IN CANBERRA

Adelaide:  Byron Wiley was 1-for-4 with a walk and a double, driving in three.  Angus Roeger was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, driving in two.  Joe Sclafani (Houston) was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Canberra:  Jon Berti (Toronto) was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Jeremy Barnes was 0-for-1 with three walks, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  A three-run double by Wiley put Adelaide ahead 3-0 in the first inning.  Canberra worked their way back into the game, scoring in the third on a ground out and in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-2.  Roeger hit a two-run double in the sixth to build the lead back to 5-2, but Canberra came back again, scoring three in the seventh on four walks, a force out, and an error.  It stayed tied at five until the ninth, when Sclafani's RBI single put Adelaide ahead 6-5.  Canberra went out in order in the ninth and had only three hits in the game.

PERTH 13, MELBOURNE 11 IN MELBOURNE (10 INNINGS)

Perth:  Brandon Tripp was 1-for-5 with a home run (his seventh), scoring twice and driving in three.  Allan de San Miguel was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.  Scott Mitchinson struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.

Melbourne:  Brad Harman was 2-for-3 with two walks and a double, scoring three times and driving in one.  Jared Schlehuber (Kansas City) was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Ryan Casteel (Colorado) was 2-for-4 with two walks and a double, scoring once and driving in two.

The game:  Perth got five runs in the first inning on two hits, getting two walks and three hit batsmen.  Two of the hit batsmen and one of the walks came with the bases loaded.  Perth still led 6-1 after two and a half, but in the bottom of the third, Melbourne got back into the game with four runs and tied it in the fourth 6-6 on Casteel's RBI double.  Perth took the lead back in the sixth on a wild pitch and scored four in the seventh on two-run homers by de San Miguel and Alex Stuart, to go ahead 11-6.  Melbourne again came back, getting one in the eighth and four in the ninth to tie it, the tying run coming in on an error.  In the tenth, Tripp hit a two-run homer to put Perth ahead 13-11 and this time it held up, as Melbourne went down in order in the bottom of the tenth.
