    1. If one were to design baseball cards from scratch, what other sabermetric stats would be good additions to the cards? I'm thinking wOBA, UZR/150 or +/-, and maybe heat zones or hit charts for batters. Pitcher cards could get WHIP, FIP, and SO%, and pitch breakdowns.

      1. They've messed with zone pictures for batters / pitchers even back in the early '90s, but I didn't find them useful there -- there is better information to show and cardboard real estate is small to begin with. WHIP would be good...baby steps!

btw, latest Beckett Baseball Magazine cover (which I just purchased):

        1. I actually had those early-Nineties cards in mind. Fleer, right?

Good point about the available real estate on the back of the card. One other thing to consider in rethinking baseball cards is the incredible ease of access to any baseball information that just didn't exist 20 years ago. I know one of the things that really got me hooked on baseball was comparing players' stats gleaned from the back of their cards, then building a lineup or roster. There has to be a cool way of getting kids hooked like that in the 2010s without presenting information that they can easily find on B-ref or Fangraphs. That's why I was thinking a couple diagrams of some type would be pretty awesome (and would jazz up the card's visual appeal, a must in today's market, it seems).

  1. I'm much more pleased with the Olympic coverage this year since I asked my dad if I could "borrow" his cable information to watch all the online content.

        1. Sigh. I love Olympics, but get very sick of coverage. This afternoon I was watching a cross-country ski race, and they didn't show the end. Gah.

          1. Really? I saw the end of some Cross-Country skiing and I was surprised that they showed all the finishers, 3 or some minutes after the medalists. Maybe they just pushed the finish late. We knew biathlon was coming so we wanted the plain skiing to be over for skiing plus shooting.
"Daddy, what country is 'K-A-Z'?" So that was the first time they heard the word "Kazakhstan".

            1. I wonder if they went away from it, and then back? It was all tape-delayed, but they weren't that far from it being over. Came back from commercial into an interview with the bronze medal mogul gal, then went to speed skating. Which can be cool too, but I wanted to see the end of cross country!

          2. The coverage last night of the American ice dancing pair was LOL worthy. First of all, the woman looks like an alien and talks like a seven year-old. Her voice definitely indicates she has some significant psychological damage. Then, the comment by her mom about how the male partner always wanted to only wear black: "We told him he either needs to start wearing stones or feathers. He chose stones."

            1. As much as I'm a fan of figure skating, I'm not going to defend coverage of it--there are a lot of other Olympic events that should get air time as well. But for me you just crossed a line here. Yes, Meryl Davis has wide-set eyes and some other distinctive features. And her voice is unusual to be sure. But significant psychological damage?!

  2. Somehow, Fulham have managed to take the lead against the run of play. That'll make the eventual 3 goal loss all the more disheartening.

      1. I'm hoping for an equalizer at the death, just for shits and giggles. I don't even care about the point it'd bring.

  3. Momentum, it's a bitch.

Beau got off to a fast start and never looked back, taking me down in two straight. In Game 1, I managed to peg two points to avoid being skunked (with a 19-pt hand backing that two-point peg!). In Game 2, I briefly took a lead down the stretch, only to see my hopes and dreams crushed.

All hail Beau, King of the Cribbage Board!

    1. correction, pegged ONE point, as Beau correctly notes. I am so shell-shocked that I can't remember.

  4. WGOM Cribbage Championship Match

Game 1: I stormed out into the lead with huge hands and never looked back. Brian was at 90 points going into the final hand and held a zero hand. He pegged exactly one point to avoid a skunk.

Game 2: Neck and neck until the final turn, when I landed a lucky cut and dropped a 15 hand. 121-104.

My first sweep. I'd like to thank SoCal, Philosopher, Meat, and BrianS for making this all possible. I couldn't have done it without you!

  5. France-Italy is getting testy. Matching red cards (ejections) for an exchange of punches, just minutes after France had a guy receive a yellow card (10 minutes in the sin bin). France is currently down to 13 men (from the normal 15), while Italy have 14.

  6. meat's sesame pork recipe* is currently in the marinade stage. Looking forward to it - and to the leftovers meat raves about in the original post.

*More or less. Probably less. Philosofette doesn't love soy sauce, so I cut back on that, added honey and a little extra lemon, and cut with a bit of oil and water for coverage. Also, more ginger, but I usually can't get enough ginger.

    1. Crab and corn bisque for dinner tonight. Fresh picked crab meat is ta.die.for. Curse these sausage fingers I was born with.

      1. Mac&cheese w/ peas and tuna mixed in. I do't think I've had this since I first graduated college.

        1. We often do mac&cheese w/ tuna and cream of mushroom soup. We add an extra 1/2 cup of milk and cook it in the microwave for 4 1/2 minutes after mixing it all together. I find it easiest to mix the soup, milk, tuna and cheese sauce in a bowl while the macaroni is cooking. Then add the macaroni after melting the butter in it to prevent the macaroni from sticking.

      2. Oh, but I do loves me some crab. We're having last night's chicken Parmesan with some fresh pasta and marinara and a salad. Leftovers is not a pejorative in this case, as the wife's chicken Parm is awesome hot, warmed over or cold. I like to make little chicken sandwiches on dollar buns with it, a little mayo and lettuce, tomato slice if I have one. I think I'll go eat now.

    2. The soy sauce is really acting like a brine here. The garlic, ginger, and sesame flavors will be more prominent with a salt / soy in the background. The salty soy flavor is also cut nicely by the amount of honey / brown sugar you opt to glaze your meat with.

      1. Right. I didn't avoid it entirely, but I did need to add a bit of other things to make up the volume needed for marinading.

In the oven now. Smells fantastic.

    3. Those leftovers were incredible, especially the sandwiches. I'm putting this one back on the list for next week.

      1. Well it was incredible the first time through, so I'm looking forward to the leftovers too.
