WGOM Fitness: Spring Training

Hey! It's starting to warm up again. Let's think about fitness.

My friends have wrangled me into running a bunch of 5Ks with them this summer. That's something I have to start training for. I got out a couple of times before this recent cold snap and things went pretty well. But I've also been distracted by my brand new weight loss plan and a different type of training entirely: a new puppy. There's nothing like spending every moment of the day trying to keep a puppy in line to keep you active and make you forget about eating.

What are your fitness goals for the coming spring weather?

  1. Got out tonight after work to do the Fleet Feet track workout at Riverside Park (our usual venue, St. Joseph college outdoor track, is under construction).

It was cold (36F) and windy, but there was a good turnout (30-35 souls). We did 8x400m at tempo pace with 1 minute recovery breaks, then 2x200m. I always put in a better effort if I'm working out with other people than if just alone.

Next race is Harvard Pilgrim Half Marathon in Middletown, Conn on April 6th - hopefully the weather cooperates for that one.

  2. Tried to run today. Got about 3 miles in, but my calves are both so tight that the hills were damn near impossible.
