March 28, 2014: Logs and Recaps

The logs are full but recapping duties are still open. We'll probably stop wanting to recap games about a month into the season anyway, so it's not like it's a big job. Go here if you want one.

  1. Maybe a weekly recap would be better?

Seasonal graphics work is progressing nicely; might actually have it posted BEFORE the season starts this year.

          1. Rotating schedule would be easiest. Alternatively, look at when series start or end (starting might be a smaller set) and assign based on that.

  2. Congratulations to the 76ers on their 26th consecutive loss. Also, congratulations to the Bucks for still having a worse winning percentage.

I think a petition is needed to get the Wolves in the Eastern Conference.

    1. someone created a twitter account @DidTheSixerWin . I dont know why it made me laugh as much as it did.

    2. The streak should be bringing some very much deserved recognition back to Fred Carter and his teammates for their place in history. That club had losing streaks of 20, 15, and 13 to go 9-72 on the season.

Their reward was to get Doug Collins as the number one pick in a weak draft.

For some reason, I had forgotten that this was the [first of two] year[s] that Billy C spent with the ABA.

    1. My nourishing mother dropped ten slots to #34. That's what happens when you ban Homecoming to prevent riots.

    2. The "forcible sex offenses" list is littered with Ivy League schools. The optimist in me hopes that is because those who are raped at those campuses have a more welcoming and blame-free way of reporting such offenses.

      1. or because "forcible sex offenses" are relatively rare (albeit not rare enough) offenses, so that the rankings are particularly noisy for schools with small undergrad enrollments?

          1. so, for the last three years, the Clery Report database indicates that there were total reports of on-campus forcible rape at 4-year public or non-profit private residential colleges with 5,000+ students of 1,773 (2010), 1,963 (2011), and 2,337 (2012), respectively.

I downloaded the data. For 2010-12, there are 1,849 campus-year reports. The average rate of reported forcible rape on campus for the three-year period was 0.229 per 1,000 students, with a median of 0.143 and a std dev of 0.283. A total of 514 campus-years were reported as zero campus forcible rapes. The range was from the low of zero per 1,000 to a high of 2.13 rapes per 1,000 students (Princeton, which also had the second-highest and 10th-highest reporting years in the data).
Here's the "top" twenty reporting years for forcible rapes per 1,000 students:

        1. Hoping to convince someone else to do it. It would also help if BR had the schedule available somewhere. They probably do but I can't find it at the moment. It's easier to programmatically convert that.

            1. There is the current widget you could look at ;). Truthfully, once BR releases their schedule it's just a matter of rearranging the columns and adjusting the format a bit.

    1. I really havent seen a single appealing trade scenario. If Love wants to walk, the Wolves would be better off playing one more season with him and hoping for a miracle playoff run and change of heart. Getting a midlevel player and a couple lottery protected picks would just keep the Wolves mediocre and in the middle of the first round. That leaves them worse off than full scale tanking.

Also, i admittedly dont know everything about the NBA salary cap but what good is an expiring contract if no good free agents would come here anyway?

      1. I completely agree with this. Carmelo aside (and his status as a superstar is debateable/laughable), I can't think of a single instance where trading a superstar has resulted in anything good for the team trading away.

        1. KG for Al Jefferson could have worked out. But the Wolves drafted Wayne Ellington and Johnny Flynn with the draft picks received.

    2. Yeah, pretty much. That said, I wish this sentiment:

He’s never going to be an elite defender, but he can be an average one,

would die a quick death. He may not get blocks making him not a "rim protector", but his dRtg is 104, the same as LaMarcus Aldridge and better than LeBron, two guys who I usually hear of as being good defensively. He's no Kevin Garnett, but I'd say he's decidedly at least average out there.

      1. What you trade off for 'elite defense' is 'less second chance points' because of Love's knack for rebounding.

The 'elite defense' tag is a weird one because how many other top players get stuck with that label?

  3. Bartlett leading off and playing RF against a lefty today. Plouffe batting third behind Mauer, who is the only lefty. He's DHing with Colabello at first.

        1. I think your reason makes more sense than mine. At least Plouffe batting third worked out okay.

Bartlett getting playing time is going to get really old really fast, though.

  4. Verne and Bill getting some love at Grantland and Time. Both these writers get it.

On a similar topic, as much as I am not a fan of the Teflon Jim Nantz, Greg Anthony is a million times better than Billy Packer. That dude was the pits.

  5. Runners on first and third (Hicks on second and made his way to third on a botched bunt and run attempt) no outs

    Florimon strikeout
    Bartlett strikeout
    Mauer strikeout

    1. Jeebus, I like Bartlett as a person, but he had 4 hits all spring. Watched him play outfield a couple of times and he's still got legs under him but his plate appearances were brutal.

        1. I was just talking with a co-worker about the Twins and we're both starting to feel like Willingham might be done. Something is sure off with him.

  6. So, I know some here are probably familiar with the popularity of the newer style of board games, but in my limited lurking lately, I haven't seen a whole lot of discussion. I wondered if anyone else out there was big into these things.

For instance, over Christmas I got Dominion (Big Box) and Tzolkin. I also just played Castles of Burgundy for the first time, and loved it. Curious to know if anyone else out there is playing and what they're playing. Perhaps a feature is in order?

      1. I've been meaning to check that place out; it's not far from my work. Extra incentive now.

      2. There will be a game of Settlers of Catan starting at one of my other sites in the next week or so.

Most of what I play are the games I create for my sites, but I've got renewed interest in tabletop gaming as my card game gets closer to production. My friend Todd and his girlfriend are friends with Wil Wheaton and they're going to ask him to feature Fall, Caesar on his YouTube show after it's produced. It does pay to know people who know people.

    1. I've played significant amounts of Dominion, Settlers, Carcassone, Trans Europa, 7 Wonders, Agricola, San Juan, Alhambra, Thurn & Taxis, Pandemic and Eldritch Horror. So many more that I want to try. A feature is a great idea.

    2. My brother is a gigantic board game player. I'll see what he's currently big on. He has Dominion at one point, but I think he traded it for something else. Other names that I can think of if the top of my head: Carcassonne (with a bunch of expansions), Axis & Allies, Pandemic, Tsuro, Catan. And that's probably not even a quarter of his games.

If you don't watch it already, Wil Wheaton has a YouTube show called "Table Top" where they play and explain board games.
