2014 Game 20: Twins at Rays

I'm posting this from work, so my usual deep, meaningful analysis will have to be eschewed.

Pelfrey vs. Odorizzi. If I were the pregame on-field reporter, I'd ask the opposing pitcher if his teammates make fun of him using "Over Easy" or if they just focus on the fact that "Odor" is in it. These are the things that keep me up at night.

  1. Alex Meyer is pitching against Pawtucket tonight and has struck out 11 through 6.2 innings of 2 hit, no run ball. #FreeAlexMeyer

  2. Why is GladStar talking about stuff on baseball caps - did I miss something?

    1. Pineda (Yankees) got ejected for a foreign substance on his neck.

edit: oh yeah, it was against the Red Sox- I'm sure you'll hear more about it tomorrow

      1. I'm assuming that RBI, combined with Fuld's stature and high level of Scrappiness Above Replacement ensures we'll see plenty of Sam Fuld the next couple of weeks.

        1. Its almost enough to wonder if we'll see Buxton before we see Hicks again. (probably not,)

  3. I'm looking at the header image for this post and laughing at the Rays' audacity to label a section the "Party Deck".

  4. Pelf's pitching 2 1/2 hours into the game? Only 5IP?
Can't we offer him to the Yanks or BoSox?

  5. Just as you're not legally obligated to take pitchers out after they hit 100 pitches, you're not legally obligated to keep them in until they hit 100 pitches.

    1. You know, with the game on the line maybe he should've gone to a better reliever instead of playing musical chairs using almost his entire middle relief corps.

      1. ...and now we're switching to Swizzlestick, with no "technical" platoon advantage.

        Make it stop.

Also, this game is almost 3 hours old - Pelfrey is not particularly quick, but he's not particularly good, either.

        1. Sleestak better stay out there for the 7th since he threw one G.D. pitch.

Also, I think the rule should be that if you get Pelf through 5 innings, pull him immediately. Same with Correia after 6. Just don't risk it.

          1. I like it, though maybe at least have the bullpen arm warmed and ready to insert upon the first baserunner after the innings you laid out.

              1. I was thinking that I'd probably be okay with it for every pitcher on the staff. Once they get past the 5th or 6th it's definitely dicey territory for anyone on the team.

                  1. Andrew Albers started his career with essentially two shutouts. Let's just leave him out there for seven plus too.

  6. Will Middlebrooks on Alex Meyer: "I asked a coach, 'Who'd he make mad? Why is he here? Are there five guys better than him in Minnesota?'"— Brian MacPherson (@brianmacp) April 24, 2014

    The answer is no.

  7. When I came back to find the game tied, I figured it was because Pelf gave up the run. Yes.

  8. Good to see Gardy is going to run through the entire bullpen the night before a day game.

      1. I still had the rejected "Fans of Chuck James" sign that I made gathering dust in the corner. Just a few minor change and it was ready.

      1. I'm going to say yes. I'm also going to say I was referring to chopping the ball off the plate.

  9. ok... so on FSN, I can hear a different broadcast of the game in the background. Am I hearing voices?

  10. Little would make me happier right now than making human garbage Lueke the losing pitcher in this game. Thanks, boys!

    1. And at the hands of seemingly all around nice guy Colabello is a small slice of karma.

  11. I'm watching the Rays feed (may or may not have found a less than reputable place to watch) and these guys are displeased with the crowd tonight.

  12. I meant to come here and say "I hope they're interviewing Mrs. Colabello again" but I clicked the cup of coffee instead and got sidetracked playing magoo's game.
    Better than 2048

  13. I think I'm falling for Colabello, guys. I'm also pleased to see this go ridiculously long, as the family and I were watching a movie tonight and I didn't figure I'd catch any of this.

    1. Great, fun story to be sure.

I'm holding the opposite thought on the length of this game here. I'm tired and want to go to bed, but I actually found a stream so I want to watch the whole thing.

    1. When do his 15 minutes of fame expire?

Hopefully the minutes are measured in whatever sort of alternate time dimension that causes Pelf starts and Red Sox-Yankees games to take for fucking ever.

  14. I haven't been able to watch a ton of games over the past few years, but is it just me or has Plouffe's defense looked somewhat competent this year?

  15. Ooh, they just got it in before Midnight (Eastern). This is the first game the Twins have won on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, this year.
If this had gone a minute longer, I'd have said "They're winless M-W."

  16. So... during post game, they go the Fox Sports North Girls at some viewing party. Like...OMG... gag me with a spoon, those girls were like, so much more annoying than, like, the spots on TV, like they handed out posters, and like, they had such a cool crowd and like, what is Fox Sports thinking?? No offense, and maybe they are nice people, but what a silly portion of the post game coverage.

    1. The best FSN Girl, Jenny Taft, was picked up by FS1 and does reporting and such.
So I guess there is a little value to the whole deal.

    1. He did pitch a pretty good game.

Is this the place where I point out that the #6pen has been doing fairly well lately? Or is that reserved for Burton giving up grand slams?

      1. Provus pointed out that the bullpen had an 18-inning scoreless streak going on last night, and that was an inning or two before the end of the game, so yeah, I think you're justified in saying they've done fairly well lately.

Plus, Burton didn't pitch last night, right?

          1. I think Deduno allowed some inherited runners to score during the "scoreless streak" too, but everyone knows those don't count 😉
